Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes,

그놈의 일기예보는 맞을 때가 없다. 흐리고 가끔 비온다더니 비가
억수같이 쏟아진다. 길은 막히겠지만 그래도 Jill에게 잘
보이려면 역시 차를 몰고 가는게 좋을 것 같다. 가스가 잠겨 있나
창문이 열린 곳은 없나 확인한 다음 현관으로 나섰다. 현관문을
잠그고 주차장으로 내려왔다. 요즘은 차가 많아져서 주차장에
차를 세워놓기조차 힘든 실정이다. 일부 몰상식한 인간들이 다른
사람들 생각은 눈꼽만치도 안하고 아무렇게나 차를 세워놓는다.
심지어 두 자리를 차지하거나 남의 차를 가로막고 세워놓는
놈들도 있다.
When will the weatherman say something reliable? Maybe, not
in this millennium. Partly cloudy with occasional rain? Then
what'd you call that pouring rain out the window? Raining
adds to the traffic congestion; but I had to drive anyway to
score some brownie points with Jill. After making sure the
gas was turned off and all the windows were locked, I went
out the porch door, locked it, and went down to the basement
parking lot. There are so many cars in the lot these days
that it's tough to find a parking space. Some thoughtless
bastards park their cars however they like, without any
consideration for others. Some scumbags even take up two
parking spaces or double park.
◈ 설명
1. 일기예보는 weather forecast, 일기예보를 하는 사람은
weatherman이라고 합니다. Weather forecaster라고도 합니다.
2. Something reliable: 첫번째 일기에 나온 일기 예보에는 가끔
흐리고 비였지만, 억수같이 비가 오니까 존이 투덜대는
내용입니다.
Reliable은 믿을만한 (trustworthy) 무엇무엇할 때 쓰지요.
-thing이 어미로 붙는 명사는 형용사가 뒤에 오지요. Nothing
special 처럼요.
3. Millenium: 천년이라는 말입니다. Not in this millenuim은,
우리도 그런 말 하지요? "어느 천년에!" 그 뜻입니다.
Millenium은 심오한 말이기도 합니다. 기독교에서 말하는 천년
왕국도 되고, 천년마다 찾아오는 "새로운 천년의 기간"이라는
뜻도 있습니다. 요즘 한창 new millenium에 대한 논란이 일고
있지요. 다음 세기가 바로 새로운 millenium이거든요. 지구가
망한다는 둥, 외계인이 내려와 선택받은 자들을 데려간다는 둥 …
얼마전 집단 자살을 했던 Heaven's Gate 사교도들도 이
millenium을 자기들 나름대로 해석하고 판단해 행동한 거랍니다.
4. Partly cloudy and occasional rain: 곳에 따라 흐리고 가끔
비.
Cloudy라고만 하면 구름이 전반적으로 낀다는 말이지만, partly
(부분적)라는 부사가 왔으니 곳에 따라 흐리다는 말이고요,
occasional은 가끔, 경우에 따라 라는 말이니까 occasional
rain이라고 하면 가끔 비가 온다는 말이지요. 상투적으로 쓰는
기상 용어입니다.
5. What do you call… : 이 표현은 "뭐뭐라고 했지만, 그럼 저건
뭐야?"라는 우리말 형식과 같습니다.
Did you say you have no money on you? Then what do you call
this in your pocket? A roll of paper?
너 돈 없다고 했지? 그럼 주머니 속의 이건 뭐냐? 종이뭉치냐?
6. Rain과 pour: rain만 쓰면 그냥 비가 오는 겁니다. Pour는
퍼붓는 거지요. Pour라는 동사 자체가 액체를 붓는다는 말입니다.
I'll pour you another cup of tea. Just relax.
차한잔 더 따라주지. 진정하라구.
액체가 아니더라도 그런 모양으로 쏟아져 나오는 형상을 뜻하기도
합니다.
Thousands of people poured out of the burning theater.
불난 극장에서 수천명이 떼거지로 쏟아져 나오더라구.
비가 억수같이 오는 것도 pour를 씁니다.
The rain has been pouring down for days!
며칠동안 비가 억수같이 쏟아지네!
7. Add to the traffic congestion: 교통 체증을 가중시킨다는
말입니다. Traffic congestion은 traffic jam이라고도 씁니다.
Add to는 어떤 상황(좋거나 나쁘거나)을 더 좋거나 더 나쁘게
한다는 뜻입니다.

니 설명 들으니까 더 헛갈린다!
8. 차를 몬다고 하면, drive one's car라고 생각하는 데, 꼭
그렇게 쓸 필요는 없습니다. Drive라는 동사 하나로 차를 몬다는
뜻이 되니까요.
9. Score brownie points with someone: 누구한테 잘 보여 점수를
딴다는 우리말과 아주 흡사한 미국 속어입니다. Brownie
(Guide)는 원래 어린 걸 스카우트 단원을 말합니다. 이
걸스카우트들이 윗 사람한테 예쁘게 보여서 받는 포상 점수가
brownie point지요. Score 대신에 earn을 쓸 수도 있습니다.
John wouldn't rat on his friends just to earn some brownie
points with his teacher!
존은 선생님한테 점수나 따려고 친구를 꼰지르는 인간이 아냐!
10. Make sure: 확인한다는 말로 잘 쓰입니다.
Make sure he's dead.
죽었는 지 확인해봐!
11. 우리는 가스를 잠그지만 미국 사람들은 끕니다 (turn off).
12. Basement parking lot: 지하 주차장. 주차 공간은 parking
space라고 합니다.
13. In the lot: lot은 큰 땅덩어리를 말합니다. 주차장도
땅덩어리지요. 앞에 한 번 parking lot이 나왔으니, lot라고만 쓴
것입니다.
14. So many cars that - : 문법 배울 때 많이 봤던 so - that
구문이지요?
That 이하의 문장에 대한 이유가 so 다음에 나오지요. 너무
무엇무엇해서 "that 이하" 했다는 말.
I was so angry that I couldn't sleep.
너무 열받아서 잠도 못잤다니까!
15. Bastards: 안좋은 말이지만 많이 씁니다. 우리말의 "자식,
놈"보다 뜻이 강하니 이해하는 차원에서 그치세요. 원뜻은 아버지
없이 자란 사람이란 말입니다.
16. However they like: 우리 말에서도 "지 맘대로 - 한다라고
하지요. 마음대로 하는 걸 좀 살펴 보지요.
You can't do everything the way you like.
모든 걸 네 맘대로 할 수는 없는 거잖아.
John always wants to have his way.
존은 꼭 지 맘대로만 하려고 든다니까.
17. Scumbags: scum과 같습니다. 욕지거리지요. 쓰레기 (오물)
주머니면 참 지저분한 사람들이겠지요? 쓰레기 같은 인간이란
말입니다.
18. Take up something: take up은 차지해 버리다라는 뜻입니다.
You just can't take up two lanes!
두 차선을 걸치고 달릴 수는 없다니까!
19. Double park: 동사로 쓰여서 나란히 앞이나 뒤를 보고 주차된
차 앞에 옆으로 차를 세운다는 말입니다. 주차장이 만원이다보니
흔히들 세워놓은 차들 앞에다 다시 차를 옆으로 한줄 세우지요?
사이드 브레이크를 안 풀어놓았다가 욕만 바가지로 먹기도 하고…
그게 double parking입니다.
Double parking은 원래 불법 주차지요. 남의 차 앞길을 막아 놓고
있는 것이니까. 차를 일렬로 죽 이어 놓은 듯이 앞뒤로 주차하는
것은 parallel parking 이라고 합니다. 어찌 보면 건전지
이어지듯 죽 늘어져 있으니 직렬 같지만, 미국 사람 눈에는 그게
parallel인가 봅니다.
실적 부진 우려가 있는 업종은 우량 기업조차 안심하고 자금을 조달하기 힘든 상황이라는 분석이 나온다.

'장승' is a post made of either wood or stone that was usually
placed in a pair at the entrances to villages temples and at roa-
dsides.
장승은 나무나 돌로 만든 푯말로써 보통 장승 한 쌍이 마을이나 신전
의 입구나 길가에 세워져 있잖아요.
We can hardly find any 장승 nowadays you know it's really hard to
find thme. But it's still a part of the Korean folk tradition.
요즘은 장승 보는 일이 사실 그렇게 쉽지 않지만 장승은 여전히 한국
민속 전통의 하나이지요.
The top portion of one of the poles was carved into a figure res-
embling a male face and several Chinese characters meaning. The
Great General Under Heaven (천하대장군) were inscribed on this
pole as well.
한 쌍의 장승중에서 하나의 꼭대기에는 남자의 얼굴을 닮은 형태와 천
하 대장군을 뜻하는 몇 자의 한자가 새겨져 있지요.
On the other pole was a figure resembling a female face and the
Chinese characters that stand for The Female General Under Ground
(지하여장군) were inscribed on it.
다른 한 장승에는 여자 얼굴을 닮은 형태하고 지하여장군을 뜻하는 한
자가 새겨져 있지요.
If you're still having trouble picturing '장승' try to imagine a
totem pole with the aforementioned descriptions instead of the
animal figures.

A pair of '장승' was erected in front of villages temples and at
roadsides to keep off evil spirits and to ensure good fortune and
prosperity to all residents.

구나 신전 앞 길가에 세워져 있었지요.
To make certain of their good fortune villagers held ceremonies
in honor of the spirits that resided in the two posts.

제사를 드리면서 경의를 표시했습니다.
Huge festivities involving the best fod and wine followed the ce-
remonies.
그 제사를 치룬 뒤에는 최상의 음식과 술을 포함한 큰 잔치가 벌어졌
지요.
In addition people performed rituals during times of hardship and
often prayed for a good harvest cure for deadly diseases and saf-
ety during a long journey.

풍작을 위해서 또 중병의 치료를 위해서, 그리고 오랜 여행 동안에 안

The process of erecting a 장승 was ritualistic and a huge task in
in itself.
장승을 세우는 과역은 의례적이고 그 자체로서 힘든 노역입니다.
Firstly the raising of these posts were allowed only during the
lunar leap months that occur only once every three years.
먼저 이러한 장승은 매 3년마다 한번씩 오는 윤달에만 있습니다.
To complicate things further the carving and the placement of the
wooden posts had to be performed on the same day.
이를 더 복잡하게 만드는 것은 나무에 모양을 새겨서 장승을 만든 다
음에 세우는 것도 바로 같은 날 해야만 하기 때문입니다.
Oh this day every single villager participated.
이 날은 마을 사람들 모두가 참여를 하게 되지요.
Women prepared the food that was to be offered to 산신 that means
mountain spirit during the ceremony while men cleaned the area
where the posts were to be erected and cut and carved the trees
that became 장승.
여자들은 제사 때 산신에게 바칠 음식을 장만하고 남자들은 장승이 세
워질 곳을 청결히 하고 장승이 될 나무를 골라서 문양을 새깁니다.
In most cases pine trees were used but sometimes chestnut and al-
der trees were used as well.
대부분의 경우는 소나무가 사용되지만 때에 따라서는 밤나무, 오리 나
무도 사용이 된다고 합니다.
Its exact origins are not known but it seems to have been preval-
ent during the mid eighth century.
장승의 정확한 기원은 알려져 있지 않지만 18세기 중반의 성행을 했었
던 것 같습니다.
Interestingly the distance between villages was measured not from
the center of one to the other but from the 장승 of one village
to the 장승 of another.
흥미로운 것은 마을간의 거리는 마을과 다른 마을의 중심지로부터의
거리가 아닌 장승간의 거리로 결정을 했다는 것 입니다.
