◆ blush, colour, flush, redden
"얼굴이 붉어지다"를 나타낼 때 쓸 수 있는 말들입니다.
1) blush : 사람이 놀라거나 당황했을 때 안면으로 피가 몰려 빨개질 때 사용되는 말로
주로 여성에게 쓰입니다. 만일 남성에게 쓰였다면 여성스러워 보인다는 의미가 되므로
다소 주의하셔야 하겠습니다.
She blushed easily at any talk of bodily functions.
(그녀는 신체기능에 관한 이야기에 쉽게 얼굴이 붉어진다.)
2) colour : 다소 부정확한 말로 blush 를 은유적으로 표현할 때 사용됩니다.
남성에게 쓰였다면 여성스러움을 피하기 위해서입니다.
He coloured up to the temples (그는 귀밑까지 붉어졌다.)
3) flush : 역시 여성스럽거나 나약한 어투를 피하기 위해 쓰입니다.
A crowd flushed with excitement.(그 군중은 흥분되어 얼굴이 달아올랐다.)
4) redden : colour나 blush대신 사용할 수 있으나 신체 변화에 대해 좀더 상세한 말입니다.
A scowl reddened by rage.(화가 나서 붉어지고 찌푸린 얼굴)
