상기도감염은 편도염 인두염 후두염 부비강염 등 코와 목구멍의 감염을 말한다.

larynx (후두) 점막으로 덮힌 근연골성 구조물로서 혀의 후근과 기관지의 꼭대기에 있는 설
골 후방에 위치한다. 음성 기관이다. 한쪽은 기관 그리고 한쪽은 인두로 이어지는 기관의 상
부에서 팽대한 부위. 기능으로는 (1) 공기가 기관을 드나드는 통로, (2) 기관에 들어가는 외
부 물질 제거, (3) 성대 보유, (4) 성문과 후두 덮개는 기관으로 들어가는 음식물과 액체를
막아내는 데 도움을 준다. 후두는 근본적으로 근육과 연골로 구성되어 있고 탄력섬유로 연
결되어 있다. 가장 큰 연골은 갑상, 윤상 및 후두덮개 연골이다. 갑상연골(Adam's apple)은
갑상선을 감싸고 있으며, 남성 호르몬의 영향을 받는다. 윤상연골은 갑상연골 아래에 위치하
며 후두의 가장 낮은 곳에 위치한다. 후두 덮개 연골은 갑상연골의 상부 경계에 부착되어
있고 후두 덮개라 불리는 판 모양의 구조물을 지탱해 준다. 후두 덮개는 평상 시에는 똑바
로 서 있어 공기가 후두로 들어가게 해주다가 삼키려 할 때는 후두가 근육 수축에 의해 들
어 올려지고 후두 덮개가 설근에 의해 아래쪽으로 눌러진다. 그 결과 부분적으로 후두 덮개
가 인두의 개구부를 덮고 기관으로 들어가려는 음식물과 액체를 제어하는데 도움을 준다.
때때로 후두 점막은 감염에 의해서 또는 흡입된 기체의 자극에 의해서 염증이 생기고 부풀
게 된다. 이렇게 되면 성대는 전처럼 자유스럽게 진동하지 못하고 목소리는 거칠어진다. 이
런 상태를 후두염이라 부르며 비록 이것이 대개 가벼운 증상일지라도 후두염은 매우 위험스
럽다. 왜냐하면 부풀어오른 조직은 기도에 장애물로 작용하여 호흡을 방해하기 때문이다.
