1937년에 Augusta National Golf Club 에서 골프 회원들에게 마스
터스 골프 대회에 초록색 자켓을 입고 참가 하도록 권장 한 일이 있습
니다. 이것은 후원자들이 클럽의 회원을 쉽게 분간할 수 있게 하기 위
해서 입니다. 그런데 이것이 하나의 전통의 되어서 49년 마스터스 골
프 대회에서 그 해의 우승자에게 초록색 자켓을 입혀 주게 되었다고
하지요. 그래서 오늘 날에는 green jacket 을 입혀 줍니다. 낱말 자체
가 '골프 대회에서 우승을 차지하다' 라는 뜻이 됩니다. 여기서 green
Masters Green 이라고 불려지고 이것을 싱글 자켓으로 왼쪽 가슴 주머

스 대회에서 우승을 차지한 선수는 1년간 자켓을 가져가고 그 다음해

hat-trick (해트트릭)은 한 선수가 한 경기에서 3점을 따는 것을 의미합니다.
주로 축구나 아이스하키 같은 경기에서 사용 되는 용어입니다. 그런데
hat은 모자, trick은 재주, 묘기라는 뜻인데 이게 왜 3점하고 관련 있
을까요? 이 말은 19세기 말부터 영국에서 처음 쓰이기 시작했는데 크
리켓 경기에서 유래한 표현입니다. 그 당시에는 크리켓 클럽의 한 회
원이 연달아 삼주문 세 개를 통과하여 세 타자를 아웃시키게 되면 나
머지 회원들은 모자를 돌려 모금한 돈이나 새 모자를 그 회원에게 선
물했다고 합니다. 바로 여기에서 삼주문을 연달아 세 개 통과하는 것
을 모자를 위한 묘기 (hat-trick)이라고 부르게 된 것입니다. 이것이
오늘날에 와서는 의미가 확장되어 크리켓 뿐 만 아니라 여러 종목에서
한 선수가 세 득점을 가리키는 말로 쓰이게 된 것입니다.
