직접 다이얼을 돌려 전화를 걸었을 경우, Dial tone(신호음)으로 통화중 여부를
확인할 수밖에 없다. 그러나 Station call(번호 통화), Personal call(지명 통화),
Collect call(수신인 지불 통화)은 교환을 통해야 하므로 이름과 번호, 통화의
종류를 정확히 말할 수 있어야 한다.
만약. 교환이 "This line is busy. (통화중입니다.)"라고 하면 자신의 상황에

과 내기를 했다고 합니다.
그 내기는 알몸으로 백마를 타고서 마을 거리를 달리면, 아
내가 청한대로 세금을 낮추어 주겠다는 것이었습니다.
그러자 Godiva 는 정말로 요구에 응했는데, 그녀가 말을 타
고서 거리를 달릴 때 창가에서 이것을 엿보던 Tom 이라는 재
단사가 장님이 되어버렸다고 합니다.
여기서 'peeping Tom (여자의 벌거벗은 모습을 염탐하는 사
람)' 이란 말이 유래되엇다고 하지요.
또 다른 일화가 있습니다.
성경에서 Tom (우리말 성경에서는 '도마'로 번역) 은 예수
님의 제자들 중에서 특히 의심이 많아서 에수의 부활을 눈으
로 확인하기 전에는 부활의 사실을 믿지 않으려 햇었죠.
위와같은 여러가지 이유로 Tom 이란 이름의 인물과 연관된
좋지 않은 인상이 사람들의 인식 속에 은연중에 자리잡게 되
엇고, 결국 Tom 이란 이름은 그다지 좋지 못한 일에서 사람
들의 입에 자주 오르내리는 이름이 되어버린 듯합니다.

주문을 결정하는 것은, 제품의 품질과 가격입니다. 그밖에 중요한
것은 애프터서비스와 보증기간에 관한 것, 게다가 영어나 그 밖의
외국어로 된 설명서 등이 있습니다. 특히 영문으로 된 세부 명세
설명서나, how to operate를 설명하는 문장은 이전부터 문제가
있었는데, 대기업의 제품 설명서에서도 잘못 또는 부적당한
표현이 있음을 발견할 수 있습니다. 이와 같은 아주 사소한
부분에 까지도 주의를 기울여야 하는 것입니다. 재고에 관해서 be
in stock (재고 있음), be out of stock (재고 없음), be short
of stock (재고 부족) 등의 표현이 있습니다.

계약기간은 얼마동안 입니까?

계약문서 초안의 「변경」은 alterations, changes로,
「수정·개정」은 revisions, 추가」는 additions, insertions,
「삭제」는 subtractions, omissions, taking out, deletions
등입니다. 「가령, 우선」은 tentatively 외에 provisionally도
있습니다. Valid는 「효력이 있다」로 having effect,
effective라고도 합니다.

Mr. West: It must be time to prepare a draft on the contract.
Mr. Lee: I agree. This is a sample of our standard contract.
Of course there can be some minor alterations, additions, or
subtractions.
Mr. West: I see. Can I check it through? If it's okay, I'm
prepared to make a draft along the lines of this sample.
Mr. Lee: One important thing is how long the contract should last.
Mr. West: How about one year, tentatively?
Mr. Lee: I think one year is too short. It should last at
least three years.
Mr. West: Well, for the moment, we can make it valid for one
year, and if everything goes well, we can extend the
contract.

웨스트: 이제 계약서의 초안을 작성할 때가 된 것 같습니다.
이철수: 그렇군요. 이것이 우리의 일반적인 계약서 견본입니다.
일부 추가시키거나 삭제 또는 작은 변동이 있으리라고
생각합니다.
웨스트: 그렇습니까? 좀 봐도 되겠습니까? 만일 괜찮다면 이
조항들에 따라 초안을 작성하겠습니다.
이철수: 한가지 중요한 점은, 계약기간을 얼마로 하는가 입니다.
웨스트: 1년으로 하면 어떻겠습니까?
이철수: 1년은 너무 짧은 것 같고, 적어도 3년은 지속되어야 할
것 같습니다.
웨스트: 현재로서는 1년으로 해두고, 만일에 모든 것이
순조로우면 계약을 연장하는 것이 어떻겠습니까?
알아둘 일
계약서는 서로 실행할 수 없는 것을 써 놓는 것도 아니고 막연한
내용을 포함시켜도 안됩니다. 나중에 문제가 발생하지 않도록
상호간의 권리와 의무를 명기하고 이것을 확인한 연후에 책임자가
사인을 하는 것이며, 영문서류가 원본이 될 경우에는 세밀하게
살펴 보아서 전문 변호사의 조언을 얻고 최종적인 태도를
결정하는 것입니다. 한국식으로 「여기는 무엇인가…」하는 것은
계약종료 후에는 통용되지 않습니다.

차라리 근처 주차장에 차를 세우고 지하철을 타는 편이 낫겠다는
생각이 들었다. 주차장에 가보니 병렬 주차할 공간밖에 없었다.
깜빡이를 켠 후 앞차보다 1미터 정도 거리를 두고차를 세웠다. 뒷
타이어가 앞 차 뒷 범퍼와 일렬이 된 걸 확인했다. 후진 기어를
넣고 오른쪽으로 핸들을 완전히 틀었다. 그리고는 45도 각도로
차를 돌려 천천히 후진을 하다 멈췄다. 이번엔 왼쪽으로 핸들을
완전히 꺽은 다음 벽과 일렬이 될 때까지 후진해 들어갔다.
뒷차와 닿지 않도록 조심하면서 후진을 했다. 나올 때를 생각해서
앞 차에 닿지 않고 나갈 수 있을 만큼 충분한 공간을 뒀다. 난
역시 똑똑해.
I chose to park the car in a nearby parking lot and take the
subway. The parking lot was also crowded and I had to
parallel park the car. I signaled and pulled up about a meter
away from the car I wanted to park behind, aligning my rear
tires with the other car's rear bumper. Put the car into
reverse, and turned my wheel all the way to the right. Slowly
backed up until I was at a 45 degree angle, and stopped.
Turned the wheels again all the way to the left, and slowly
backed up until I was parallel with the wall. Backed up
straight as far as I could go without touching the car behind
me. I made sure I had enough room to clear the car in front
of me. That way, I could ease out of the parking space when I
got back. How sly I am.
1. Chose to park: choose to ~ 는 무엇무엇하기로 결정하다는
표현입니다.
Decide to와 다른 점이라면 몇가지 상황 중 하나를 선택해서
결정한다는 것이지요. 여기서는 자동차를 계속 타고 가는 것보다
주차시키는 것이 낫겠다고 생각해서 선택하는 것을 의미합니다.
2. Take the subway: Take a bus, take a taxi라고 하지만
지하철은 take the subway라고 합니다.
3. Paraller park: 명사구 또는 동사구로도 씁니다. 병렬
주차지만 우리말로는 일렬 주차가 더 일반적이지요. 벽면으로 죽
차를 늘어놓고 주차시키는 걸 말합니다.
4. Pulled up about a meter away: Pull은 차를 서서히 세우거나
움직일 때 쓰는 동사입니다. Up이 쓰인 것은 개념상 뒷 차보다
윗쪽에 세우는 것이기 때문이지요.
5. Aligning my rear tires with ~ : align은 정렬시키는 걸
말합니다. 카센터에 가면 휠 얼라인먼트라고 씌여있지요? 바퀴를
정렬해주는 것이지요. 워드 프로세서에?
문단을 정렬하는 것도 alignment라고 합니다.
6. Put the car into reverse: 차를 후진에 놓는 것이구요.
전진에 놓으면 put the car into drive겠지요.
Overdrive에 놓으려면 put the car into overdrive.
또는 Pops English에서 다뤘던 Savage Garden의 To the Moon and
Back 가사에도 나왔듯 push the shift to overdrive라고 할 수도
있지요.
7. All the way: 무엇무엇을 어느 한도까지 완전히 할 때 쓰는
말이지요. 어느 지점까지 한번도 쉬지 않고 달려갔다면,

집까지 줄곧 달렸다.
8. At a 45 degree angle: 전치사를 잘 보세요. 각도도 역시 어느
지점에 불과 합니다. 지점을 나타낼 때 쓰는 전치사는 at이지요.
어떤 전치사를 써야할 지 고민될 때는 "의미"를 새겨보세요.
9. Clear the car: 비켜간다는 말을 clear한다고 합니다. 앞에
장애물이 없는 것이 clear거든요.
가끔가다 영화를 보면 몰래 밖을 내다보면서,
The coast is clear. 라고 하는 걸 볼 수 있는데요. 무슨 무슨
전선 이상무라고 하는 것과 같습니다. Coast는 여기서 해변이라는
뜻이 아니라구요.
10. Ease out of the parking space: 힘들이지 않고 나온다는
말이지요.

I presume은 「확신은 없자만 ~일 것이라고 생각한다」라는
의미를 가진 구입니다. 첫 대면의 인사로는 I'm pleased to meet
you. Nice to meet you. How do you do? 등 여러가지의 형이
있는데 어느 것을 사용해도 좋습니다. 다만, 시기적절하게 때와
분위기에 맞추어서 자신에게 익숙해져 있는 표현을 고르십시오.
「12시간의 비행」이라고 하는 a 12-hour flight는 a flight 속에
12-hour라고하는 형용사가 들어있다고 생각한 것으로 hour를
복수로 하지 않습니다. 「수하물(짐)」이라고 하는 baggage는
주로 미국에서, luggage는 주로 영국에서 사용합니다.
