→ 미국에서 노예해방 운동이 끝나자 John이라는 노예는 자유의 몸이 되어 한 백인곁을 떠나게 되었는데 항상 John이라는 노예가 뒤처리를 해 주었기에 그 백인은 화장실 갈때면 'John! John!'하고 소리지르고 다녔다고 함.

우리들은 화장실에서 일을 볼 때 누군가 밖에서 노크를 하면 주로 ‘에헴!’하고 헛기침을 하는데 미국인들은 이때 주로‘Occupied!’라고 말한다.‘사용중!’이란 말인데 It's being used! 또는 Someone's in here already! 와 같은 말이다.

Number one or number two? 큰 거냐, 작은 거냐?
* '소변 본다'는 말에는 pass water 외에 urinate와
slang으로 piss와 pee가 있다. 화장실에 가고 싶다는 말이
대변과 소변을 구별해서 말할 필요가 있을 때 소변일 때는
I have to go to the bathroom. Number one.라고 하면 되고
대변일 경우에는 Number two라고 하면 된다.

- 우리 아기 좀 봐주실 수 있겠습니까?
* babysit대신에 sit with라고 쓰이기도 한다. 긴 시간 동안
babysit하는 것이 아니고 '잠깐 봐주는 것'은
keep an eye on∼이라 한다. (공항이나 화장실에 가기 위해)
아기가 아니고 '남의 집을 봐주는 것'은 housesit이라 한다.

* 미국사람과 한국사람이 무슨 문제를 놓고 논쟁을 벌이다가
한국 사람이 화장실에 가느라고 자리를 비웠는데 한국사람이
바지의 지퍼를 올리면서 화장실에서 나오자 미국인이
You're all wet.이라고 말했다. 그러자 한국사람이 고개를 숙여
자기 바짓가랑이를 내려다 보았는데 미국사람이 한 말을
'당신 모두 젖었다'고 해석했기 때문에 자기가 소변을 보다가
실수를 해서 바지춤이 젖은 줄 알았던 것이다. 그러나 미국사람이
한 말은 You're dead wrong 즉 '당신 생각이 완전히 틀렸어'란
뜻이었다. wrong앞에 dead란 단어를 더 갖다 붙여 dead wrong이라고
하면 '크게 틀렸다'는 말이 된다. 정말 안타까운 일이 미국 사람들이
틀렸다는 말을 항상 wrong으로만 하면 좋은데 all wet이니
way off base니 하는 말도 쓰니 정말 영어를 배우는 외국인들은
골치가 아프다. not hold water란 말도 있는데 '물을 잡고 있지
않다'는 말이 되지만 사실은 '말이 안 된다' 또는 '틀렸다'는 뜻이다.

* Lavotory : 비행기의 화장실을 이렇게 부르죠..
* Bathroom, Restroom : 미국서 많이 쓰인다
* Washroom : 캐나다 남동부에서 쓰임.
* Man's, Ladies 라고 표기하는 관광지도 더러는 있대요..
그리고 고속도로 휴게소는 Restarea 라고 하고

The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
“In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!
