Students' Violent Clash With Police : 과격학생시위
^^We deplore the violent clashes that indiscreet student activists had
with riot police from Tuesday in Seoul in connection with the
unauthorized unification festival organized by the federation of student
councils, or Hanchongnyon. We also recognize the inevitability of the
joint direction the three Cabinet members responsible for home affairs,
justice and education issued on Wednesday to deal sternly with the
radical students, sending in riot police and helicopters to fire tear gas
to disperse the militant pipe-wielding students hurling stones and
firebombs.
우리는 지각없는 운동권 학생들이 대학 학생회 연합체인 한총련이 주관한
불법 통일 축제로 인해 화요일 서울에서 전투경찰과 격렬한 충돌을 하게 된
것을 매우 유감으로 생각한다. 우리는 또한 이 사건에 직접적인 책임이 있
는 내무, 법무, 교육부의 3부장관들이, 파이프를 휘두르며 돌과 화염병을 던
지는 운동권 학생들을 해산하기 위해 전투경찰과 헬기를 투입하여 최루탄을
발사하는 등, 운동권 학생들에게 단호히 대처하기 위해, 수요일 공동으로 취
한 조치의 불가피성을 인정한다.

^^Indisputably, violent demonstrations and firebomb throwing, however
justifiable the cause, must be treated as illegal acts subject to the
control of the law enforcement authorities. The existing law prohibits the
production, transportation and use of firebombs. But the number of
firebombs used this year has increased to seven times the figure
reported in the first half of last year, showing the extent of the problem.

radical anti-government opposition groups. However, Hanchongnyon is
quite different from these other radical opposition groups in the degree to
which it is prepared to resort to violent and militant action by its
members just like an organized militia, admittedly without guns and
swords, but equipped with souped-up firebombs, iron pipes and stones,
which can be lethal too.
물론, 이러한 친북한노선은 한총련의 전신들인 전대협, 민민투, 기타 극단
적인 반정부 야권 단체들에 의해 1980년대부터 전체적으로 혹은 부분적으로
추종되어 왔었다. 그러나 한총련은 기타 운동권 야권과는 달리 처음부터 폭
력을 행사하고, 대원들을, 총칼은 없으나, 그래도 치명적인 개량 화염병, 철
파이프, 돌멩이들로 무장한 민병대처럼 편성하여 무력 행위에 의존하려 했
다.

^^The violent students have mistaken ways of thinking in two respects.
The first is their hewing to an ideological line benefiting the enemy,
which is proscribed by the National Security Law. The second is their
use of violence to pursue their goals, physically challenging riot police, a
symbol of government authority, by beating them and throwing
firebombs at them.

의해서 금지되고 있는 이적 이념 노선을 추종했다는 것이다. 두번째 잘못은
자신들의 목적을 달성하기 위해 국가 공권력의 상징인 전경과 물리적인 충
돌을 일으켜, 전경들을 구타하고 화염병을 던지는 등 폭력을 사용하였다는
것이다.

In a rare show of consensus, a vast majority of people in most
social sectors agree that harsh punishment should be meted out to the
participants in the violent, illegal demonstrations. Unusually, the
opposition parties have joined the government and ruling party in
condemning the militant students, who threw stones and firebombs at
riot police, beat them with steel pipes, illegally occupied university
buildings and destroyed school furniture and other fixtures.
사회 각계각층에서는, 보기 드물게 한 목소리로, 폭력, 불법 시위에 참여
한 학생들은 엄벌에 처해야 한다고 주장하고 있다. 더구나, 야당에서도 정부

During the nine-day standoff, thousands of radical students and even
a larger number of riot police fought each other, exchanging volleys of
tear gas, petrol bombs and stones, and blows with steel pipes and
billy clubs. Hundreds on both sides were injured and in the aftermath,
a riot policeman died of the head injury he received from a rock thrown
by a student.
9일간의 대치 중에, 수천 명의 운동권학생들과 더 많은 수의 전경들이 최
