What of the Southern leaders, all of whom were liable to charges of

it. Davis was temporarily chained in his prison cell during the early
days of his two-year imprisonment. But he and the other Southern leaders
were finally released, partly because it was unlikely that a jury from
Virginia, a Southern Confederate state, would convict them. All the
leaders were finally pardoned by President Johnson in 1868 in an effort
to help reconstruction efforts proceed with as little bitterness as
possible.

인디언들이 백인과 이를 갈며 싸우던 시절에는 백인포로를 죽이는 방법이
갖가지였다. 그중 하나는 손발을 꽁꽁 묶어놓은 채 가죽끈을 물에 불려 잔
뜩 늘여서 목에 적당한 길이로 매어놓기도 했다. 가죽끈은 마르게 되면 수축
하기 때문에 목이 더 조여져서 백인이 죽게 되는 것이었다. 이러한 인디언
의 가죽끈을 'leash'라고 하였다. 따라서 「멀리」라는 're-'가 붙어 있는
'release'가 「석방」 또는 「개봉」의 의미를 가지게 된 것이다.
