행동·진행을 훼방하는 것, 「장애(물)」「방해(물)」을 의미하는 말들이며, obstacle은 글자대로 또는 비유적으로, 가는 길에 놓여 있어서 장애가 되는 것·유형물도 무형물도 될 수 있다.
ex) The great obstacle to progress is prejudice./ A roadblock was the first obstacle to the tank column's advance.
obstruction은 통로를 어느 정도 닫아 막아서 진행·활동을 막는 것을 말한다.
ex) A blood clot is an obstruction to the circulation.(응혈은 혈액순환의 장애물이다.)
비유적으로 사용될 때에는 고의로 길을 막아 놓은 것을 가리킨다.
ex) These delays seem a deliberate obstruction of justice.
hindrance는 만류하거나 지연시켜서 진행을 방해하는 것을 말한다.
ex) Lack of supplies is the great hindrance to my experiment.
impediment는 무거워서 발을 얽어매듯이 걷지 못하게 하는 짐을 의미하는 라틴어 impedire(�」의 뜻으로 아직도 가끔 사용된다.
ex) The general decided to go ahead of his impediment.(장군은 화물에 앞서 가기로 결정했다.)
그러므로 「장애(물)」이라는 뜻에서 impediment는 obstruct라기보다는 hinder이다. 신체의 기능이나 건강을 방해하는 것이라는 뜻에서의 impediment는 「말더듬기, 언어장애」라는 특수한 뜻으로는 이 말을 인정하고 있다. 또한 이 뜻에서의 복수형은 impediments이다.
