Ballads were early types of poetry and may have been among the first kinds

(ANS) When I got to the station, the train had already left. But for the breakdown of the bus on the way, I could have been in plenty of time.

[比較] earth, globe, world
The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof.(땅과 거기에 충만한 모든 것은 주의 것이다.)/ this goodly frame, the earth(지구라는 이 훌륭한 조직체)
While we are yet on earth, let us be mindful…
circumnavigate the globe
the politics of the globe/ The whole world hopes for peace.
We give too much thought to the things of this world.(우리에게는 세속적 관심사가 너무나 많다.)
The world is too much with us.

Trying wouldn't hurt.
여기서 hurt대신 do any harm을 써도
Do you have time for a cup of coffee?
친구가 A few minutes wouldn't hurt.

Dialogue is supposed to be interactive. Because there was a lot of essential
issues not discussed during the meeting, many people felt thirsty for fresh
answers to honest questions.

■be in hot water
일례로 범법자들은 'be in
아이는 'be in hot water with his mother'일 것이다.

HAT TRICK

Have you ever watched waves rising and falling in the ocean? Perhaps you have thought that the water in each wave had traveled for miles.
Really, the water in each wave seldom gets far from its regular position, and in any particular part of the ocean, the water changes very little.
Most of the motion of ocean water is up and down.
The forward motion in one drop of water is given to the next drop and by this drop to the next one.
Thus, the waves move over great distances, but the water itself goes a very short distance.

An English lady was to stay with a friend in the country.
At Liverpool Street Station in London, she bought a magazine and got on the train.
Then she noticed that she had lost her ring, a treasured present from her mother.
The train was about to leave.
She could not find the ring.
Then a porter came up and said that he would try to find it for her.
The lady asked him to phone her if he found it.
But she was worried.
When she arrived at her friend's house, she received a call.
The ring was found.
Someone had left it with the shopkeeper.
Two days later, she received the ring.
She learned that there were people who believed that “A kindness is never lost.”

When I was studying for my doctorate at the University of Southern California,
I spent every weekend in my study that I had established in our garage.
One Sunday a friend took my family to Disneyland.
They phoned me from there: “Hey, John! I bet you wish you were here with us!”
First, I grumbled at them.
Then I felt sorry for myself, sitting alone in a hot garage while others were having fun.
And then I reminded myself why I was there.
I wanted to be Dr. Anderson.
I enjoyed the thought of myself as Dr. Anderson.
Ignoring the temperature and the phone call, I went back to work.

If necessity is the mother of invention, error is the father.
Thousands of foods we eat, products we purchase, and machines we operate came from lab mistakes and lucky accidents.
After a political cartoon illustrated a small bear encountered by President Theodore Roosevelt on a hunting trip,
children came to call their bears “Teddy.”
If a war economy had not required the nation to find a substitute for rubber,
consumers might have not experienced the joy of stretching and bouncing Silly Putty, a kind of toy made by accident.

Today most scientists believe that the moon formed from the earth.
They think that a large object hit the earth early in its history.
Perhaps the object was as big as Mars.
When the object hit the earth, huge pieces of the earth broke off.
These pieces went into orbit around the earth.
After a brief time, the pieces came together and formed the moon.

When I started snow-boarding and then decided to turn professional, it wasn't really a career option.
There was little money in it, you know.
Even though I was ranked number one, I wasn't making a living at it.
So I just figured I would probably do something else.
Since I was always focused on computers,
I thought at some point that if I had to, I probably would go into web design or something.
That's probably what I would have done, if I had not beaten my first competitors.

Among the main biological changes in happiness is an increased activity in a brain center that inhibits negative feelings and fosters an increase in available energy, and a quieting of those that generate worrisome thought.
But there is no particular shift in physiology save a quiescence, which makes the body recover more quickly from the biological arousal of upsetting emotions.

It was the most delicious meal I'd ever had.

Thank heavens he woke me up in time to get off and catch the train at Barstow.
If he hadn't awakened me, I never would have made it.

Behind the Polish military move loomed the shadow of the Kremlin. Indeed,
if the government of General Jaruzelski had not imposed the crackdown, the
Soviets certainly would have.

This would be something remarkable in anyone in any walk of life; but in someone
whose position was humble and obscure it might not be so surprising as it was in a
world-famous statesman who has left a deep mark, and this on the whole world and
not just on his own country. In this great statesman, the lovable human being was not
smothered by the eminent public figure; I should say that, in Nehru, there was not even
the faintest touch of pomposity or self-importance or self-consciousness. He retained the
spontaneity and the buoyancy of youth after he had been carrying for years an unusually
heavy burden of office. It was not till his last years that the unforeseen breach between
India and China began to bow him down under its weight.

You once told me you were not a natural writer. My God! You have plainly
mastered the craft, of course; but you needed far more than craftsmanship for this.

But for his help, I would have been drowned.

If you will ask some one who has at some time acted in a manner for which
he would be punished if it became known, you will find that when discovery
seemed imminent, the person in question repented of his crime. I do not
say that this would apply to the professional thief who expects a certain
amount of prison as a trade risk, but it applies to what may be called
the respectable offender, such as the bank manager who has embezzled in
a moment of stress, or the clergyman who has been tempted by passion into
some sexual irregularity. Such men can forget their crime when there seems
little chance of detection, but when they are found out or in grave danger
of being so, they wish they had been more virtuous, and this wish may give
them a lively sense of the enormity of their sin.

My mother loved me no less ardently than my father, but she was of a
quicker temper, and less clever at winning affection.
She was comely when I first remembered her, she was also accomplished.
Had I not known my father, I love her better than anyone in the world,
but affection goes by comparison; indeed in after-life I remember my
mother's telling me, with many tears, how jealous she had often been
of the love I bore him. She would say how mean she had thought it of
him to entrust all scoldings to her, so that he might have more than
his due share of my affection.

We cannot study the lives of great men without noticing how often an
apparent misfortune was for them an exceedingly fortunate thing.
If Walter Scott had not been crippled by disease as a child, he might
not have stayed in the country that made him a great poet and a romancer.
One hears of so many instances, indeed, of bad luck turning into good
that one sometimes wonders whether one ought not to be sorry for the
people to whom the apparently unlucky things happen.

I look forward to old age without dismay. When Lawrence of Arabia was
killed I read in an article contributed by a friend that it was his
habit to ride his motor-bicycle at an excessive speed with the notion
that an accident would end his life while he was still in full
possession of his powers and so spare him the indignity of old age.
If this is true it was a great weakness in that strange and somewhat
theatrical character. It showed want of sense. For the complete life,
the perfect pattern, includes old age as well as youth and maturity.

In France a man who has ruined himself for women is generally regarded
with sympathy and admiration; there is a feeling that it was worth while,
and the man who has done it feels even a certain pride in the fact;
in England he will be thought and will think himself a damned fool.
That is why Anthony and Cleopatra has always been the least popular of
Shakespeare's greater plays.
Audiences have felt that it was contemptible to throw away an empire
for a woman's sake.
Indeed if it were not founded on an accepted legend, they would be
unanimous in asserting that such a thing is incredible.

The role of the rare individual who is conventionally said to have made
a discovery is much less unique in science than in other creative work.
It has been fairly said that if Beethoven had not written his symphonies
no one else would ever have done so. But if Darwin for instance, had
died young, someone else would certainly have put forward the theory of
Natural Selection. Indeed, someone else did, though in much less detail,
independently.

Do we really have the best university program? Perhaps. But every
educator would add or subtract a few subjects. And no matter what list of
courses would be offered, it would not be approved by all students. Not
only do the professors have their own ideas on the matter, but the
students have theirs, too. "I don't believe that only the colleges have
the right to define what an educated person is," protested a student when
his university revised its programs.

Just as you may sometimes need to talk things over with someone, your
mother may need to, also. When she discussed your homework with others,
she may have been looking for suggestions. Calmly explain to her how it
embarrasses you when she tells others your problems. Perhaps you and she
can come to an agreement about what should be kept between just you two
and what need not.

The author of the best-selling "A Brief History of Time" is in Bombay to attend "Strings 2001," a conference on the string theory, also called the "Theory of Everything."
(A Brief History of Time)”의 저자이기도 한 호킹은 “만물의 이론(Theory of Everything)” 이라 불리는 “Strings 2001” 학회에 참석하기 위해 Bombay에 와 있다.
He and others believe that once proved, it may be the answer to conflicting theories on the origin and fate of the universe.
Hawking said life on other solar systems would be either more primitive or more advanced than on Earth.
"If life is already developing in other solar systems, there is little chance of catching it at the stage at which humans are now," Hawking said.
"As we explore galaxies, we might find primitive life but not beings like us."

But this scenario was rudely challenged last week by Kevin Pope, a former NASA scientist.
Reviewing recent studies of atom-bomb blasts and analyses of particles in strata at the 65 million-year level, he concluded in Geology that most of the dust particles were too large to have remained suspended in the air for many months.
The finer particles that stayed airborne would not have blocked enough sunlight to cause mass extinctions.

How did the black hole form in the first place?
It could have started with a large star that burned out its nuclear fuel and then collapsed.
If the star was big enough, the implosion would have been so violent that all the atoms would have been crushed out of existence.
The entire star would have been squeezed into an immeasurably small size, and its density and gravity would have increased enormously.
Over the universe's 15 billion-year history, billions of other stars could have ventured too close and been sucked in, making the hole grow ever more massive and powerful.

The second possible benefit of communal roosts is that they act as
"information centers." During the day, parties of birds will have spread
out to forage over a very large area. When they return in the evening
some will have fed well, but others may have found little to eat. Some
investigators have observed that when the birds set out again next
morning, those birds that did not feed well on the previous day appear
to follow those that did.

Ancient people made clay pottery because they needed it for their
survival. They used the pots they made for cooking, storing food, and
carrying things from place to place. Pottery was so important to early
cultures that scientists now study it to learn more about ancient
civilizations. The more advanced the pottery in terms of decoration,
materials, glazes, and manufacture, the more advanced the culture
itself.

They will find, if they submit an outline or questionnaire to their

“Hold your horses," is an English idiom which dates back to the 19th century.
“Hold your horses."
In the 19th century, if a coachman found that his horses ran too fast, he'd have to hold back on the *reins.
This would pull the horses to a stop.
In horse racing, some new horsemen would start their horses too soon and the starter would have to say, "Hold your horse."
Now this saying means "Don't make haste".
For example, if you see someone starting his work in haste, you could say, "Hold your horses and look before you leap."

[John's Diary]
It was passed the rush hour and they must have increased the
train intervals. It would take much longer than usual to get
to the theater, I thought. Shit! The theater was just a stop
away. What a day! Wasted time and money for nothing! At this
point I began to think that I should have tried running to
the theater. After about 10 minutes, I heard the next train
pulling in. People didn't bother to line up and stormed
towards the train. The PA system cranked out a warning to get
on the train in an orderly fashion, but that didn't prevent
the fat lady behind me from jumping the line and forcing her
way through the crowd.
1. It was passed the rush hour:
지났다고 할 때 It is passed ~를 씁니다.
2. They must have increased the train intervals: Train
She must have missed the train, or she should be here by now.
3. It would take much longer than usual: 여기서 would를 쓴
Will에도 추정의
4. Get to the theater: 도착하다는 arrive를 흔히 쓰지만,
When you get there, please call me.
5. For nothing:
Good for nothing이라는
You're good for nothing.
pull in한다고 합니다.
7. Didn't bother to line up:
Please, don't bother. It's too much of a hassle.
8. Stormed towards the train: Storm
The loan sharks stormed into my office.
9. The PA system cranked out a warning: PA는 public
Crank it up이라는 말도 잘 쓰는 데요.
10. Jumping the line:
Jump the gun이라는 말도
11. Force one's way through: 동사 + one's way + 전치사 형태는
He forced his way through the crowd.
He elbowed his way into the bus.
He felt his way out of the room.
She kept up the relationship with them.
그렇게 관계를 유지하는걸 keep up the relationship (with someone)이라고 합니다.
그냥 keep up with someone만 써도 같은 뜻이예요.
They've kept up with each other even as they broke up.
I try to keep up the relationship with those I met when I
worked as a teaching student.
