Fossils in 500-million-year-old rocks demonstrate that life forms in the
Cambrian period were mostly marine animals capable of secreting calcium to
form shells.

Given that two-thirds of the Earth's surface is water and that marine

It's actually two thousand separate reefs

that together form a barrier stretching for over a thousand miles

along Australia's northeastern coast.

Despite it's vast size

this reef does not contain the greatest variety of marine life on the planet.

For that one must travel north to Indonesia.
