Greenland, the largest island in the world, is just about the most ungreen place on earth!
Most of this island, which is more than three times as large as Texas, is continually covered with ice and snow.
This ice sheet is two miles thick in some places.
There are no forests in Greenland; there are just some trees, shrubs, and mosses in the southern part and along the coasts.
Then how did this land get its name?
In 982, a Scandinavian explorer named Eric the Red sailed to Greenland and spent three years there.
When he returned home, he called the land he had seen “Greenland” in the hope of convincing some of his followers to settle there.
세계에서 가장 큰 섬인 Greenland는 지구상에서 가장 푸르지 않은 섬이다.
Texas보다 세 배 이상 큰 이 섬의 대부분은 늘 얼음과 눈으로 덮여있다.
어떤 곳에서는 얼음의 두께가 2마일이나 된다.
Greenland에는 숲은 없고, 남쪽 지역과 해안선을 따라서 나무와 관목, 그리고 이끼만 조금 있다.
그런데 이 섬은 어떻게 해서 그 이름을 갖게 되었을까?
982년에 Eric the Red라는 이름을 가진 스칸디나비아의 한 탐험가가 Greenland로 항해하여 거기서 3년을 보냈다.
고국에 돌아왔을 때, 그는 그의 추종자들이 그곳에 살도록 납득시키고자 하는 희망에서 그 땅을 Greenland라고 불렀다.

Surrounding Alaska on all but one side are two oceans and a vast sea,
giving this state the longest coastline in the United States. In fact,
if the coastlines of all of its peninsulas and islands are considered,
Alaska has a longer coastline, 33,904 miles (54,563 kilometers), than
all the other 49 states together.
두 개의 대양과 하나의 큰 바다가, 한쪽 면만을 제외하고 알래스카의 모든
면을 둘러싸고 있어서, 그 주에게 미국에서 가장 긴 해안선을 제공하고 있다.

The seas indent the shores of the main peninsula to form other
peninsulas that contribute some of the most outstanding features to
Alaska's outline. Most notable of these is the Alaska Peninsula. The
peninsula itself is 550 miles (885 kilometers) long, before the
spectacular chain of islands reaches toward Asia.
바다들이 그 주 반도의 해안선을 움푹 파이게 해서, 알래스카의 윤곽에다가
가장 두드러진 몇 몇 특징들을 제공하는 다른 반도들을 형성한다. 이들 중
가장 눈에 띄는 것은 알래스카반도이다. 그 반도 자체의 길이가 550 miles

Part of Alaska's ocean heritage, many islands lie along the fringes of
the state. Much of southeastern Alaska is made up of the Alexander
Archipelago of 1100 islands, including Baranof, Kuiu, and Admiralty.
Continuing up the coast are the islands of Prince William Sound. The
Aleutian Islands pursue their bleak and windswept course in a long arc
that encloses the Bering Sea. Included in the Aleutian chain are whole
archipelagoes, such as the Fox, Near, and Rat islands.
알래스카의 바다유산의 일부인 많은 섬들은 그 주의 가장자리를 따라서
놓여있다. 알래스카의 남동부의 대부분은 Baranof, Kuiu, 그리고 Admiralty
등을 포함하는 1,100개의 섬으로 이루어진 알렉산더 군도(Alexander

◆ irregular, abnormal, exceptional
irregular은 불규칙한, 일정하지 않다는 뜻을 가집니다.

도류제 (導流堤, Training levee) - finelee
: 하천의 합류점이나 하구 등에 토사가 쌓여 유로(流路)가 교란되는 것을 방지할 목적으로 유수(流水) 방향을 따라 쌓은 둑.
: 도수제(導水提)라고도 함.
: 유로가 교란되어 하천에서 쓸려 내려오는 토사 등이 항내에 들어와 쌓이는 것을 방지하기 위한 것으로서, 하구(河口)에서는 해안선으로부터 어느 정도 바다에 돌출 되도록 설치되는 것이 일반적이며 이 때는 돌제(突堤)라고도 함.

방사제 (防砂堤, Groyne, Groin) - finelee
: 해안선에 평행한 모래의 이동을 저지하여 수심(水深)을 유지할 목적으로
항만 외곽에 해안과 거의 직각을 이루도록 쌓은 둑.

from erosion, to trap sand, or to direct a current for scouring a channel.
