The jobs that most companies are doing with information today would have been impossible several years ago.
At that time, getting rich information was very expensive,

On Valentine's Day, Tom asked me to have dinner with him.
He insisted that my two daughters, aged 9 and 11, be at home when he picked me up.
When arriving, he asked us to sit on the couch.
From his pocket, he took three small boxes.
One contained a diamond engagement ring.
Each of the other two contained a heart-shaped ring with a tiny diamond in the center.
He proposed to all three of us and, needless to say, I didn't have a chance.
The four of us have been married now for three and a half years.

One Saturday morning last summer, my alarm clock failed to go off.
I was wildly pulling on jeans, flying out the door, and leaping onto my bike.
I had only fifteen minutes to get to Dr. Johnson's house.
He had hired me to mow his vast lawn, and he had warned me that he did not tolerate lateness or excuses.
He was a tyrant, so I feared him.
He paid top dollar, however, so I tried to act obediently.

In 1988, the United States suffered one of the worst droughts in history.
As weeks went by without rain, crops died and river levels fell.
Conditions were so bad that ships were unable to travel on the Mississippi River.
As the water levels fell, the remains of old boats ― Civil War gunboats, barges, and even a steamboat ― were disclosed!
In some places the once-sunken boats were left high and dry, and archeologists could walk right up to them.
By studying the boats, these scientists were able to learn a great deal about day-to-day life on the barges and steamboats of the past.

John Brown, the hero of an American Negro folk song, was born in 1800 in Connecticut, USA.
His father was against slavery and an agent of the Underground Railroad, which secretly helped runaway slaves to reach Canada.
At that time, slavery was a usual thing in the southern states of America.
Slaves could be bought on the open market and sold again.
Husbands and wives, mothers and children were sold to different masters.
John was only nine years old when he saw a black slave beaten to death.
He couldn't understand why black people were treated unfairly.
He decided to do the same thing as his father.

Imagine you were asked to work overtime and you didn't want to do it.
Then you were told you would get paid twice as much money.
You would probably become more cooperative.
This idea also works with children.
A few years ago, a child of mine wouldn't brush her teeth before going to bed.
Nothing we did could make her change her mind.
Then, my parenting class teacher recommended that I should give her rewards.
So I used this simple phrase, which worked wonders:
“If you go and brush your teeth now, we will have time to read three stories instead of just one.”
Whenever she heard it, she would jump up and brush her teeth right away.

When other painful changes came along in later life, I always recalled my mother's words.
And recently, when a friend of mine was having a hard time dealing with the loss of his job, I gave him the same advice.
At first he couldn't accept it, but after a while, he came to see that this was one of the changes that happen to everyone.
In the end, losing a job motivated him to start his own business.

Mae, a Chinese student, appeared in the dormitory room with a bruise on the face.
She felt she was ignored because her American roommate didn't mention it at all.
The wounded student thought that her silent roommate didn't notice or didn't care.
But the American student was purposely not paying attention, thinking Mae might not want to talk about it.
She let the Chinese friend decide whether or not to mention it.
She was being considerate by not imposing, which was the American style.
But Mae, based on the Chinese style, couldn't understand why her roommate didn't care.

Watching Uncle Fred rowing the boat so strongly and so easily along, Mike began to feel more and more jealous of him.
His pride began to whisper that he could do it.
The little boy asked again, “Please, I want to row now.”
With a smile Fred said, “It’s not as easy as it looks.”
But he handed him the oars, knowing the water was shallow.
The boy pulled the oars back, made a great dig at the water, and missed the surface altogether.
He fell back and grabbed at the side of boat.
Instantly it turned over.
The struggling boy was gripped by Fred who was already standing in the water.
Carried to the shore in his uncle’s arms, the boy could not even look at him.

The combine relieved farmers of much of the burden of harvest.
It enabled farmers to rescue crops which otherwise might have been lost.
The combine was first developed for use in countries where the climate was suitable for grain production.
It was said that the climate in such countries as the British Isles was totally unsuitable for its use.
However, this was not true.
Combines work in quite damp conditions.
The use of a combine resulted in a big reduction in the time and labor required to harvest a given crop
because only one or, at the most, two men were needed to operate the machine.
Other labor required to transport the grain to storage was not excessive.

In primitive societies, people had to fight wild beasts, not only for self-defense, but also for food.
In addition, they couldn't avoid coming into conflict with other groups.
As the result, people ended up practicing different forms of fighting to protect themselves.
During this period, when grappling was a predominant method of combat, various techniques were invented.
And, naturally, this developed into a martial art.
A wall painting in an ancient tomb shows this fact and there are many historical records of it as well.
Nowadays, ssireum(Korean wrestling) is a type of folk competition in which two players, holding on to a long piece of cloth tied around the waist,
try to use their strength and various techniques to wrestle each other down to the ground.

A man decided to find out.
He first acquired sponsors.
Then, vowing not to leave for an entire year, he took up residence in an empty house with only a computer and an Internet connection.
He had no problem obtaining either necessities or luxuries.
Online shopping allowed him to acquire furniture, food, and even pets.
Although he agreed to stay at home, his visitors fulfilled his social needs.
He even threw parties via Internet chat rooms.
He also volunteered for an organization for disadvantaged children.

A century of volcanic inactivity of the mountain had made the village people think it nothing to worry about.
Unfortunately it exploded with the force of 10 million tons of TNT one morning.
The top of the mountain was blown away completely and a thick carpet of ash covered the landscape.
Trees were scattered about like tooth-picks.
There was no sign of life.

Most people believed that decades, even centuries, would pass before the land would recover.
However, nature proved to be far more resilient than expected.
The return of life was remarkable.

Well, my dad has gone above and beyond the call of duty for me.
This past weekend, my dad bought a new car.
The car is in his name and under his insurance, but I'll be the one driving it.
I didn't ask him to do that for me; he came up with the idea on his own.
I am so thankful that he did.
Of course, I'll have to make the payments.
The first one isn't due until the end of August.
Hopefully, I'll have a job by then.
Or, at least, I will be able to collect my unemployment benefits.
The car is a 2005 Cheetah Cobalt.
I love everything about my car, especially its color.

When Roxana arrived, she found her son in such despair and misery that her heart was touched and her motherhood rose up strong in her.
He was ruined past hope now; his destruction would be immediate and sure, and he would be an outcast and friendless.
It was because he was a nigger, despised race.
His position in society is one of enslavement, oppression and discrimination.
On the whole it is only the most back-breaking and most despised jobs that are open to him.
In many states niggers cannot go to the same school or eat at the same table with the white people.
When Roxana tried to comfort his son, it was useless.

Elephants are also surprisingly good at solving problems.
An Indian farmer who kept elephants discovered this fact, to his misfortune.
He had noticed that his elephants were eating his bananas at night.
No fence could keep out the elephants, of course, so he decided to tie bells on them.
Then he would hear them when they came to eat the bananas and he could chase them away.
A few mornings later, however, the bananas were all gone, though he had heard nothing at night.
When he checked the elephants he found that they had played a trick on him.
They had filled the bells with mud so they would not make any noise!

I've tried everything I can think of to make him get up.

I've set my own alarm clock and gotten up with him, I've duck-taped the "on/off" switch on his clock so he must use the snooze button instead, and even tried letting him suffer the consequences of getting up late.

That hasn't worked either.

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish important trade links with China in the 1500's.

Although the Chinese tried to ignore or resist the foreign traders, two factors worked against them.
The central government in China was weak, and the Europeans had superior weapons and ships.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, the Chinese were unable to stop foreign interests from influencing their country.

Other conquered European nations seized upon Napoleon's problems in Russia as their chance to rearm and to break loose from French control.

She had just begun an intense, love-at-first-sight relationship, only to have her lover go off to Europe three weeks later.
For seven tortured weeks she was plagued with doubts.
What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

In doing this I passed by many food stands where fried chicken and half-moon apple pies were piled high and made to present a most tempting appearance.

At that time it seemed to me that I would have promised all that I expected to possess in the future to have gotten hold of one of those chicken legs or one of those pies.
But I could not get either of these, nor anything else to eat.

For more than eleven weeks, Philip Charles Habib shuttled back and forth across
the Middle East, following an itinerary that would have been arduous for a young
man, let alone a 62-year-old official who has suffered four heart attacks and
undergone bypass surgery. Habib carried all his medical records with him, as well
as his medications. He likes to rest for a while in the afternoon, but there was little
time for that during the talks.

The volunteer fire department was fighting the blaze engulfing my cousin's
barn. As he watched, he dialed his insurance company on his portable phone,
but there was no answer. "How come my agent is never there when I need
him?" he asked in frustration.
One of the firefighters tapped him on the shoulder. "That's because I'm
right here, putting out the fire," responded the agent.

Recently I bought a new car radio from a dealer who recommended it highly.
It proved no better than the one it replaced. I was about to charge into
his store and demand my money back, but it occurred to me to put myself
in his place. Doing this I saw how offended he'd be at having his judgment
questioned. So I took a different tact and appealed to his sense of
self-respect. He exchanged the radio for a much better one, without
charging me the difference in cost. As my grandmother used to say,
"You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."

When Alexander the Great invaded Asia Minor, he came across a knot tied
by King Gordius. It was tied so ingeniously that no one could untie it.
When Alexander was told that whoever undid the knot would reign over the
whole empire of Asia, he cut it through with a single stroke of his sword.
Then he began to fulfil the prophecy, conquering large parts of Asia Minor
before he died at 33.

David was a young man who worked in an office in a big city. His hobby
was trout fishing, but he did not often get a chance to practice it.
Then one summer he decided to have a holiday in a beautiful place in
the mountains where there were a lot of streams.
"I ought to be able to have some good fishing there," he said to himself.
The first morning after he arrived, he walked to the nearest stream
with his fishing-rod.
He saw an old man with his rod standing beside the water.
David said to him, "Good morning, sir. Is this a private stream?"
The old man answered that it was not.
David said, "Why don't you fish here with me, sir?"
The old man answered with a smile, "I should like to, but I'm sorry I can't."
David then said, "Well, it won't be a crime if I catch some fish here,
will it?"
"Oh, no," answered the old man, "it won't be a crime, but it will
certainly be a miracle."

Looking for the places only they would know
Lie-la-lie
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a "come on" from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare there were times whenIwas so lonesome
I took some comfort there Ooo-la-la
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone, going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Leading me, going home
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter byhis trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving
But the fighter still remains
-
* lay out - 정리하다(arrange),준비하다(prepare).
There were glasses laid out as though there was going to be a
party.
* clearing
* a fighter by his trade
He follows the trade of fiction.
I'm a fixer by trade.(제 직업은 리공입니다.)
* But the fighter still remains -
* I have squandered ......mumbles -
데 이 노래에 나오는 mumbles(의미없이 중얼거리는 말), 즉 확실하지
* for a pocketful... 의 for는 in exchange for (~과 교환하여) 정도
* Such are......jest - 앞 문장의 mumbles의 내용을 설명하는 말이다.
* Still, a man......rest -그럼에도불구하고(still) 이 권투선
이 노래를 만든 Paul Simon은 he 대신 'a man'이라는 표현을
* In the company of strangers -
못한 분위기 (the atmosphere is uncomfortable).
When a man does something wrong and can't take responsibility,
all he can do is running scared.
(being inconspicuous).
* poorer quarter - 빈민가.
* get no offers - (일자리를 소문 해보았지만) 어느 곳에서도 오라
* "come on"......Avenue - 뉴욕시의 7번가는 Brooklyn 근처에 있는 홍
등가 (red light district)를 말하는데 여기에서의 "come on"은 매춘
" Hi baby, are you looking for something? Can I help you? Come
on,baby! "
* I do declare - 고백하건대(I confess).

There are "bad" genes as well as "good" ones.
Bad genes are actually mutated good genes which, because of altered DNA messages, do not function normally.
Until recently, there was no way to isolate and characterize bad genes.
They were known only by their consequences: disease.
Today, however, thanks to the development of powerful new ways for studying DNA, there is a flood of information about the faulty genes implicated in virtually every major human disease, including diabetes, cancer, and asthma.
Every week or so a new disease gene is discovered.

Life in those days was a lot simpler than it is today.
There were no PC game rooms where kids could hang out or get into trouble.
The only way to contact people was through the telephone, so keeping in touch with friends wasn't as easy as it is today.

Before the mid-nineteenth century, people in the United States ate most
foods only in season. Drying, smoking, and salting could preserve meat
for a short time, but the availability of fresh meat, like that of fresh
milk, was very limited; there was no way to prevent spoilage. But in
1810 a French inventor named Nicolas Appert developed the
cooking-and-sealing process of canning.
Nicolas Appert

Current understanding of the interaction between different plates
explains why these occur where they do. For example, the edge of the
Pacific Ocean has been called the "Ring of Fire" because so many
volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen there. Before the 1960's,
geologists could not explain why active volcanoes and strong earthquakes
were concentrated in that region. The theory of plate tectonics gave
them an answer.
of Fire" 라고 불렸다.

The most financially rewarding of all the Academy-Institute awards are
the Mildred and Harold Strauss Livings. Harold Strauss, a devoted editor
at Alfred A. Knopf, the New York publishing house, and Mildred Strauss,
his wife, were wealthy and childless. They left the Academy-Institute a
unique bequest : for five consecutive years, two distinguished (and
financially needy) writers would receive enough money so they could
devote themselves entirely to "prose literature"(no plays, no poetry,
and no paying job that might distract). In 1983, the first Strauss
Livings of $35,000 a year went to short-story writer Raymond Carver and
novelist-essayist Cynthia Ozick. By 1988, the fund had grown enough so
that two winners, novelists Diane Johnson and Robert Stone, each got
$50,000 a year for five years.
Alfred A.
Mildred
Robert Stone

Prior to the establishment of “the coffee house” as an institution in
England, it was the custom of most inns to give the best seats in the
house (near the fire) to the wealthiest customers. If a wealthy person
or party entered, current customers would be bumped from their table at
a moment's notice. The English coffee house began a new tradition: one
took the best seat available, and no one could move you once you were
seated. Furthermore, as long as discourse was conducted in a civil
fashion, any topic could be discussed: art, sex, religion, politics,
nothing was considered taboo.

Looking for poems related to life I could find, then, different points
of view on childhood, youth, adulthood, old age. I could find the poets'
vision and feelings on love, joy, sadness, suffering, personal
relationships, lone- liness, friendship, and so on, with none of them
expressed in the same way.

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen from
about 280 parts per million (ppm) before the Industrial Revolution to
360 ppm today; it threatens to go to 560 in the next century. The world
has already warmed about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the last century.
Because sea-
water expands when heated, oceans have risen four to ten inches. Could
this reflect natural climate swings? Anything is possible. Over the past
10,000 years, though, century-to-century variability has seldom been
this high.
