There is a dilemma―probably a false dilemma―facing people who run schools
and colleges. Should they do most for the cleverer, or for the less
cleverer? In one sense, the answer is obvious. If you want to teach a
potential nuclear physicist, or a great musician, then he will need to
be taught more than most of us. On the other hand, since it is clear
that clever children for the greater part teach themselves, it might be
thought that the greatest effort should be given to those that do not
teach themselves.
학교를 운영하는 사람들에게는 난처한 문제가 있다. 똑똑한 학생들을 중심으로
가르쳐야 할 것인가 덜 똑똑한 학생들을 중심으로 가르쳐야 하는가? 어떤
의미에서 그 대답은 뻔하다. 장래에 핵물리학자나 위대한 음악가가 될 인재를
기르려면 남들보다 많이 가르쳐야 할 것이다. 다른 면에서 생각해보면 똑똑한
학생들은 대부분 스스로 공부하는 것이 분명하므로 스스로 공부하지 못하는
학생들을 위해 최대의 노력을 해야 한다고 생각된다.
미국은 말할 것도 없고 '익명가공정보' 개념을 도입해 개인정보 활용에 길을 터준 일본에도 뒤처질 게 뻔하다.
