English literature of Korea must be regarded as of Korean Sciences because it has been taught to Korean Language at least for forty years. As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.
(2) 우리들 한국 사람들에게는 자랑할 만한 역사적 업적이 많다. 기네스북을 들여다보면 이를 뒷받침하는 증거를 찾을 수 있다. 인쇄로 말하자면 한국에서는 금속활자의 사용이 유럽보다 50년 앞섰다. 금속활자는 12세기말 또는 13세기초쯤에 발명되었다.

- 아직 이상적인 남자를 찾지 못했어요.
* 한국에서는 봄과 가을에 결혼식을 많이 하지만 미국에서는
6월에 결혼식을 많이 올린다. 미국 처녀들의 꿈은 June bride
즉 '6월의 신부'가 되는 것이다. 결혼식은 wedding ceremony,
신부는 bride, 신랑은 bridegroom, 또는 groom이라 부른다.
주례는 officiator라 한다. 결혼식에서 신부의 아버지가 딸을
신랑에게 '인계'해주는 것을 give away라 한다.
그리고 미국에서는 결혼식을 몇 주일 앞두고 신부를 위한
파티를 열고 살림 도구 등을 선물로 주는 풍습이 있다.
이것은 bridal shower라 한다. 신부가 목욕하는 것으로 오해하면
안되겠죠. I haven't met Mr. Right yet. 라 하면 여태까지
이상적인 남성을 만나지 못했다는 뜻이고 Mr. 대신에 Miss를 쓰면
이상적인 여성을 만나지 못했다는 뜻이 된다.
또한 Prince Charming 은 동화에서 Cinderella와 결혼하는
왕자의 이름인데, 이상적인 결혼상대(남자)를 의미한다.

I'm tickled to death to be here this evening라고 말했는데
통역가가 이 말을 어떻게 통역해야 할 지 몰라서 그대로
'내가 오늘 저녁 여기 왔기 때문에 죽을 때 까지 난
가려워서 긁게 될 것입니다.'라고 통역을 했다.
정말 말도 안되지만 be tickled to death란 idiom(관용구)를
모르면 이렇게 밖에 해석을 할 수밖에 없을 것이다.
be tickled to death는 be very pleased 또는 be very happy와
같은 뜻이다. 글자 그대로 해석하면 '너무 간지러워서 죽는다'는
뜻인데 '매우 기쁘다'는 뜻이 된다. 정말 말도 안되는 말이지만
하여튼 미국에서 많이 쓰이는 표현이니깐 눈물을 머금고 알아둘
수밖에 없다. to death대신 pink를 써서 be tickled pink라고도
한다. 물론 I'm dying to see her라고 한국에서 쓰는 '죽겠다'란
표현도 쓴다. This heat wave is murder 또는
The recession is killing us 등등 '죽겠다' 란 표현도 많이 있다.
I'm going grocery shopping 장 보고 올께.
* 미국 사람들은 '장보러 간다'는 말을 go shopping이라고 하는데
특히 식품 종류를 사러 supermarket에 가는 것은
go grocery shopping이라고 한다. 그리고 물건을 사지 않고
구경만 한다는 뜻으로 한국에서는 eye shopping이란 말을
쓰는데 이것은 konglish이고 진짜 영어는 window shopping이라
한다. 그리고 물건을 사기 위해 여기저기 돌아 다니는 것을
shop around라 한다.

☞ 여성을 칭찬하는 말 ☜
한국에서는 여성을 칭찬하다가 잘못하면 오해를 사기 십상이지만 ,
외국에서는 여성을 보면 칭찬하는 것이 에티켓이다. 그렇다고 무턱
대고 칭찬하는 것이 아니라 아직 잘 모르는 사이라면 직접 본인을
칭찬하기보다는 우선 의복이나 소지물을 칭찬하는 것이 좋다.
What a lovely sweater you're wearing! (스웨터가 멋진대요)라든
가 You look real cool in that dress. (그 드레스가 참 근사하군
요) 처럼 말할 수 있다. 이 cool 이라는 말은 한때는 많이 사용했
지만 최근에는 좀 한물 간 말이 되어 버렸다. 이 경우의 cool 은 [
근사한,멋진] 이라는 말이다. 혹은 I like your hairstyle. (머리
모양이 마음에 드는군요) 하고 헤어스타일을 칭찬하는 것도 좋은
방법이고, 더 나아가서 Your hair is beautiful. 이라고 말할 수도
있다. 하지만 섹스에 관한 것을 노골적으로 화제에 올리는 것은 삼
가는 것이 좋다. 가령 sexy 라는 말은 면전에 대고 말하는 것은 바
람직하지 않다. 그 자리에 없는 제 삼자에 대해서도 [ She looks
very sexy in her jeans.] ( 진 차림의 그 여자는 아주 섹시해요)
정도로 그치는 것이 좋다. 몸차림이 단정하거나 모양새가 좋을 때
우리말로 [스마트 하다 ]고 하는데 영어의 smart 는 [머리가 좋다,
영리하다]라는 뜻이다.
【1】 존함은 많이 들었습니다.
I've heard a lot about you.
「말씀 많이 들었습니다」, 「소문은 많이 들었습니다」라고 할
때 쓰는 관용표현이다. 한국에서도 이런 말은 초면의 사람과 인
사할 때 많이 사용하지만, 영어에서도 마찬가지이다.

But what I really worry about is that the new language used by the youth on the Internet is becoming even more common than proper Korean.
The strange language has already made its way into the children’s diaries and homework.
When they become grown-ups, two different languages might be used in Korea.
They might think Korean used by older generations is an alien language.
It’s really scary just imagining it.
그러나 내가 정말로 걱정하는 것은 인터넷에서 젊은이들에 의해 사용되는 새로운 언어가 올바른 한국어보다 훨씬 더 일반적이라는 것이다.

사회에서는 consensus(=a general agreement, collective or

쓰이고 있습니다.

Money is very different in United States.
미국에서 돈이라는 것은 매우 다른 거예요.
For example, I know that here, parents will try to pay for the
children's college education but you take it further.
예를 들면, 한국에서는 부모님들께서 자녀들의 대학교육비를 지불하시
죠. 하지만 자녀들은 더 많이 가져가게되죠.
See, after we're 18 or after we graduate college at least,
Americans are very independant people.
자, 미국인들은 18세 가 넘거나 적어도 대학을 졸업한 후에는 매우 독
립적인 사람이되요.
Now, most Americans after they leave home, their money is theirs.
대부분의 미국인들이 집을 떠난 후부터 그들의 돈은 그들 것이예요.
They keep it for themselves.
자신을 위해서 돈을 보관하죠.
As Koreans tend to live at home until they get married, except
for one they're at army, one they're living at University.
하지만 한국인들은 군대에 있을 경우나 학교에서 사는 경우는 제외하
고는 결혼 전까지 집에서 살려고 하잖아요.
But if they're not in school or not in the army, they usually
live at home but Americans don't.
학교에 다니질 않거나 군에 있지 않을 때 조차도 대부분 집에서 살죠.
하지만 미국인들은 그러지 않아요.
Americans only go back home if they are in University or if
they're in financial problems, having financial problems in most
cases.
미국인들은 학교에 재학 중이거나 재정적으로 문제가 있을 때에만 집
으로 돌아가요. 대부분이 재정적인 문제일 경우죠.
Now here is the most important part.
자 이부분이 가장 중요한 점이예요.
Koreans usually, young Koreans, they give a lot of money, maybe
all the money I don't exactly, you would know to the home.
한국인들, 특히 젊은 한국인들은 집으로 많은 돈을, - 전 정확히는 모
르지만 아마 모든 돈일 거예요, 여러분은 아시겠죠? - 집에 가져다 줘
요.
They work and get some money to the parents.
그들은 일해서 번 돈을 부모님께 드리죠.
That's one of the advantages of children's staying at home but
also the parents really have a lot of controll over the
children's money.
그게 자녀들이 집에 머무는 잇점일 수는 있어요. 하지만 부모님들께
서 자녀들의 돈을 관리하시는데도 많이 관여하시죠.
If it's the children's money, parents have a lots of control.
그게 자녀들의 돈이라고 하더라도 부모님께서 더 관리하신다는 거죠.
But Americans will pay their parents some if they're living at
home.
하지만 미국인들은 집에서 산다고 하더라도 부모님께 약간의 돈을 지
불할 뿐이예요.
They might pay their parents a little bit of extra money.
부모님들께 약간의 여유돈을 지불할 거예요.
But often times you live there for free.
하지만 대부분 공짜로 살 수 있죠.
Extra money is your money. Your money is yours.
남는 돈은 여러분의 돈이잖아요. 여러분의 돈은 여러분거죠.
And when you get married, in America your parents try to pay for
the wedding and maybe they will give you a gift.
그리고, 결혼을 할 때, 미국에서는 부모님들께서 결혼비용을 지불하시
고 선물을 주실거에요.
If you're wealthy, they might give you a house or a car. But all
of them they're very wealthy.
여러분께서 부자라면 아마도 집이나 차를 주시겠죠. 하지만 그러시는
분들은 아주 부자일 경우죠.
But, in Korea, most parents want to try to pay for the children's
first apartment and furniture.
반면에 한국에서는 대부분의 부모님들께서 자녀들에게 결혼하고서 살
게될 아파트나 가구들을 마련해 주려고 하시죠.
So, it's much harder for young Americans because basically
they're expected to pay for everything for themselves.
그래서 미국 젊은이들이 더 힘들죠. 왜냐면 기본적으로 모든것을 자신
들이 부담하도록 되어있기때문이죠.
We're gonna talk about physical contact.
오늘은요 신체 접촉에 대한 얘기를 해 볼까합니다.
According to the traditional Confucian ethics, a boy
and a girl must be saperated when they turn seven.
This shows that physical contact between a boy and
a girl was absolutely prohibited in Korea.
한국의 유교사상에 의하면 남자와 여자는 7세가 되면
같이 있을 수 없다고 명시를 했죠. ('남녀칠세부동석' 이
렇게요.) 이것은 한국에서 남자와 여자의 시체적 접촉이
철저히 금지되었다는 것을 보여주지요.
Of course the world has changed a great deal since
the days of Confucianism. Nowadays, physical contact
between the sexes among young people is a pretty
common sight on campuses, on the streets and many
other public places..
물론, 세상은 예전으 유교사상으로부터 많은 변화를 겪
었죠. 요즘 젊은 사람들의 신체적 접촉은 대학 교정, 거
리, 그리고 공공장소에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 광경이지요.
Traditionally while physical contact between opposite
sexes were strictly prohibited, contact among the
same sex was tolerated.
하지만 전통적으로 이성간의 신체접촉을 금지한 반면,
동성간의 신체접촉에 대해서는 아주 관대했습니다.
I'm sure that you have witnessed many females
walking hand in hand in hand with another female.
여러분들 가운데 많은 분들이 경험하셨으리라 생각되는
데 한국에서는 여자들끼리 손을 잡고 겯는 행동을 많이
볼 수 있습니다.
There are instances where males will even sit on
each other's laps.
어떤 경우 남자끼리 무릎에 앉기도 하지요.
I am certain that many foreign newcomers in Korea
probably thought that they were homosexuals.
(M : Yeah~)(O : It stranged me too.)
아마도 한국에 처음 오신 분들은 이런 사람들이 동성연
애자들이 아닌가라고 생각하셨을 것입니다.
However, this is far from being the truth. It is actu-
ally an expression of friendship.
그러나 그것은 사실과 거리가 먼 얘기이지요. 그것은
실제로 우정의 한가지 표현방법입니다.
Many Koreans will laugh and dismiss the Westerner's
notion that this is an act of homosexuality.
많은 한국인들은 이것을 동성연애자들의 행동이라고
보는 외국인들의 생각을 웃음으로 지나칠 것입니다.
To Koreans, a show of affection or physical contact
between the same sex is just a natural phenomenon.
It is nothing more than an expression of intimacy
and friendship.
한국인들에게 동성간의 애정의 표현이나 신체접촉은 자
연스러운 현상이지요. 그것은 애정과 우정을 표현하는
방법일 뿐입니다.
When a Korean friend of the same sex holds your
hand or puts an arm around you, do not think that
they are making a pass at you. It is the most sincere
form of flattery. But if you are really uncomfortable
with the idea, all you have to do is tell your friend.
만약 여러분에게 한국인 친구들이 손을 잡거나 어깨에
손을 얹는다고 그들이 수작을 건다고 생각하진 마십시오.
가장 순수한 형태의 친근감이라고 할 수 있지요. 그러나
여러분이 그러한 행동이 정말로 불편하다면 한국인 친
구들에게 그렇나 불편한 마음을 털어놓으세요.
Make sure you tell your friend how physical contact
between the same sex is viewed in the West. I am
sure that your friend would be very understanding.
동성간의 신체접촉에 관한 동양과 서양간의 견해가 얼
마나 다른지 설명해 주세요. 그 친구도 기꺼이 이해해
줄 것입니다.
