[그리스신화] 【유니콘(Unicorn)】 뿔이 하나 달린 짐승이다. 유니콘에 대한 일반
적인 인상은 말의 이마에 뿔이 하나 나 있는 것이지만, 로마의 박물학자
플리니우스(Plinius)의 설에 의하면 "매우 난폭한 동물로, 몸체는 말과
비슷하며 머리는 사슴, 발은 코끼리, 꼬리는 멧돼지, 낮은 신음소리를 내
며 검은 뿔 하나가 이마 한가운데에 나와 있다", 게다가 '생포하는 것은
불가능하다'라고 되어 있다. 중세교훈에는 유니콘을 잡으려면 젊은 처녀
한 명을 데리고 가면 된다고 나와 있다. 유니콘은 순진한 처녀를 보면
안심하고 경계를 풀고 접근해 오는 성질이 있기 때문이다. 그래서인지
유니콘의 옆에 젊은 여자가 함께 있는 그림을 자주 보게 된다.

원래 clearing은 고층건물들 사이에 있는 빈 공간 (vacant spot)을
의미하는 말이지만 이 노래에서는 홀로 외로운 싸움을 하고 있는 주
인공이 서있는 '사각의 링' 한가운데라고 보는 것이 타당하다.

trade는 '직업(occupation)'이라는 의미로도 자주 쓰이는 말이다.

여기에서는 a boxer 를 다시 한번 풀어 쓴 것으로 '다시 말해 싸우는
것을 직업으로 갖고 있는' 정도의 의미가된다.

을 지를 때까지 그를 흠씬 두들겨 패주었던 권투글러브에 의한 상처
＊ But the fighter still remains - 때로는 이런 비참한 생활을 청산하

＊ I have squandered ......mumbles - 별로 중요하지 않은 것들을 위해
기력을 낭비해 왔다. squander 하면 '~을 낭비하다(waste)'라는 말인
데 이 노래에 나오는 mumbles(의미없이 중얼거리는 말), 즉 확실하지
않은 한줌의 공허한 말들만 믿고 링 위에서 저항하며 싸워왔다는 뜻
이다.
＊ for a pocketful... 의 for는 in exchange for (~과 교환하여) 정도
의 의미로 볼 수 있다.
＊ Such are......jest - 앞 문장의 mumbles의 내용을 설명하는 말이다.
싸우고 있는 선수들을 북돋아 주기 위한 각가지 약속들(promises),
예를 들면 시합에서 이기면 어떤 보상을 해줄 것이라는 등. 그 중에
는 거짓말(lie)도 있고 그냥 농담삼아 지껄인 말(jest)도 있었을 것
이다.
＊ Still, a man......rest -그럼에도불구하고(still) 이 권투선수는
자기 귀에 달콤하게 들리는 말은 믿고 다른 말들은 무시해버린다는
의미. 이 노래를 만든 Paul Simon은 he 대신 'a man'이라는 표현을
씀으로써 단지 이 권투선수 뿐만이 아니라 인간들 모두가 이러한 단
순한 속성을 가지고 있음을 간접적으로 묘사하고 있다.
＊ In the company of strangers - 낯선 사람들과 함께 있다, 즉 편안치
못한 분위기 (the atmosphere is uncomfortable).
＊ running scared - (흔히 죄를 짓거나 잘못을 한 후)겁에 질린.
When a man does something wrong and can't take responsibility,
all he can do is running scared. (어떤 사람이건 간에 뭔가 잘못
을 하고 책임을 질 수 없게 되면 두려움 속에 떠는 길 밖에는 없을
것이다.)

(being inconspicuous).

＊ "come on"......Avenue - 뉴욕시의 7번가는 Brooklyn 근처에 있는 홍
등가 (red light district)를 말하는데 여기에서의 "come on"은 매춘
부(whores)가 손님들을 유혹할 때 쓰는 말이다. 이들은 흔히 다음과
같은 말로서 사람들을 유인하기 마련이다.
" Hi baby, are you looking for something? Can I help you? Come
on,baby! "
＊ I do declare - 고백하건대(I confess).
On the other hand, a number of ambitious fantasy projects and mega-budget entries like "Resurrection of the Little Match Girl," "Yesterday" and "Are You Ready?" turned out to be flops that slipped into oblivion amid lackluster market response.
반면에 “성냥팔이 소녀의 재림”, “Yesterday", 그리고 ”Are You Ready?" 같은 많은 야심적인 환타지 프로젝트들과 대규모 예산 영화들이 맥없는 시장반응의 한가운데 망각속으로 미끄러져 가는 실패작으로 판명되었다.

In the middle of my solo G.P. practice (before I retired), I
noticed that my patient load had dropped more than 50
percent in a very short period. When I investigated, I found
my receptionist had informed patients calling for an
appointment that I was fully booked for weeks, or I no
longer saw new patients for various reasons. None of this was
true.
저 혼자 (은퇴하기 전에) 일반 진료의를 하는 중에, 환자수가
아주 단기간에 반 이상이나 준 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그래서
알아보니, 우리 접수계원이 예약을 위해 전화한 환자들에게
내가 여러 주 동안 예약이 꽉 찼다고 하거나 여러가지 이유로
더 이상 새로운 환자를 볼 수 없다고 했다는 것입니다.

perhaps the biggest national holiday in Korea. this year
Ch'usok will fall on the 27th of September. On that day, you
will learn many things that are associated with this holiday
through various form of media.
음력 8월 15일은 한국의 가장 큰 명절 중의 하나인 추석입니다.
올해는 9월 27일이 추석인데 그 날 여러분은 다양한 형태의
매체를 통해서 추석과 관련된 많은 것들을 알게 될 것입니다.
Ch'usok is also called Chungch'ujol. This literally means
"midautumn" day.
추석은 '중추절'이라고도 불리는데 이는 '가을의 한가운데 날'
이라는 뜻이지요.
Ch'usok is a period where separated family members gather
to discuss their lives while enjoying the newly harvested
grains and fruits.
추석에는 흩어져 살던 가족들이 모두 한자리에 모요 각자의
생활에 대해서 얘기하면 새로이 수확한 곡식들과 과일들을
즐깁니다.
The most important activity done at Ch'usok is to give
thanks to ancestors and also to give thanks to Mother nature
for providing a bountiful harvest.
그러나 추석날 하는 가장 중요한 일은 조상님들과 풍요로운
곡식을 수확할 수 있게 한 자연에 감사를 표하는 일이지요.
After changing into the hanbok, the family busily prepare
dishes with the newly harvested grain. Then this is offered
to the ancestors as a way of saying thank you. This rite is
called ch'arye.
추석에는 온 가족이 한국의 전통 의상인 한복으로 갈아입고
새로이 거두어들인 곡식으로 분주히 여러 가지 음식을 차려
놓은 다음 조상에게 경의를 표하는 의식인 '차례'를 지내지요.
When offering ch'arye, You will always find certain kinds of
food such as: kimch'i, meat, fish, walnuts, persimmons, dates,
pears, apples. And Ch'usok would not be completed without
songp'yon. To those who are not familiar with this dish, it
is half-moon shaped and filled with stuffing made from
sesame seed and sugar. The dish is always steamed on top
of pine needles.
차례를 지낼 때 오르는 음식은 김치, 고기, 생선, 호두, 감, 대추,
배, 사과 그리고 추석의 대표적인 음식인 송편을 빼 놓을 수 없
습니다. 송편을 잘 모르시는 분들을 위해 설명을 드리면 송편은
반달 모양처럼 생긴 떡으로 떡 안에는 깨와 설탕이 들어 있습
니다. 송편은 항상 소나무 잎 위에서 찌는 음식이지요.
After the ch'arye, all the family members gather to go to the
graves of their ancestors. They go there to pay their
respects and afterwards they clear up the surrounding area
by pulling weeds.
차례를 지내고 난 다음 가족 모두 조상의 묘를 찾아가서 그 분
들께 경의를 표합니다. 그런 다음 잡초를 뽑아 묘지 주위를
깨끗하게 하지요.
There are many games and dances associated with Ch'usok,
and in the past these activities where done in a communal
setting.
추석과 관련된 여러 가지 게임이나 춤들이 있는데 과거에는 이
러한 활동들이 이웃간의 공동 활동으로 행해졌습니다.
The most famous activity of Ch'usok is kanggangsuwollae
which is a combination of a song and dance where people
hold hands and spin to the rhythm of the songs. In one sense,
it can be compared to square dancing.
추석의 가장 대표적인 놀이에 '강강수월래'라는 춤이 있는데 이
것은 노래를 부르면서 그 노래의 리듬에 맞추어 사람들끼리 손
을 잡고 원을 그리면서 추는 춤이지요. 어떤 면으로는 미국의
'스퀘어 댄스'와 비교될 수 있습니다.
The contents of the song, kanggangsuwollae is about
happiness, love and longevity.
강강수월래라는 노래는 행복, 사랑 그리고 장수를 기원하는
가사로 이루어져 있지요.
