through the grapevine: 소문을 통해~(from what one person said to another, by rumor)

→ 눈물 속에서 밤을 지새자…: after a sleepless night passed in tears
(ANS) Sonya Tolstoy as a young woman seems to have been attractive. She had a graceful figure, fine eyes and dark lustrous hair. She had vitality, high spirits and a beautiful voice. Tolstoy had long kept a diary, in which he recorded not only his hopes and thoughts, his prayers and self-reproachings, but also the faults, sexual and otherwise, of which he was guilty. On their engagement, in his desire to conceal nothing from his future wife, he gave her his diary to read. 1.
→ 지나간 시간은 짧다: 시간은 빨리 지나간다로 보고 time flies; time passes quickly
→ 재미가 없다: have a hard time 또는 be in trouble등을 활용다.
→ 시간이 길게 느껴진다: 시간이 천천히 지나가는 같다 이니까 time seems to crawl 또는 time seems to go (or pass) slowly로 해 본다.
(ANS 1) Time seems fly when you are absorbed in doing something, while it seems to crawl when you are having a hard time.
(ANS 2) It seems that time goes quickly when you are engrossed in something, while it passes slowly when (you are) in trouble.

→ 「국인」은 여기서는 국민 전체를 말하므로 The Koreans 또는The Korean people이라고 다. 「지금까지 걸어온 역사적 과정」은 관계대명사를 이용하여 the historical process which ~ have gone through라고 다.
Perhaps because of (or owing to) ~로 다. It is perhaps because of ~ that…
「중요시하지 않다」는 「~의 중요성을 경시다」즉 neglect(또는 be negligent of ~) the importance; underestimate the significance로 표현다.
(ANS 1) Perhaps because of the historical course (which) the Korean people have gone through, they seem to have so far been rather negligent of the significance of taking good care of their health.
(ANS 2) It seems that the Koreans have so far rather underestimated the importance of taking good care of their health. This is perhaps due to the course of history they have passed through. ~31

It seems as if (or as though) it had been just a few days ago that~. It seems only a few days ago that~ 현재의 사실에 대해서「마치 ~인 처럼」이라고 할 때는 as if (or as though) 뒤에 오는 동사는 가정법과거가 쓰이지만, 여기서처럼 과거의 일을 말할 때는 가정법과거완료형으로 다.

→ 「불타는 태양 아래서」under a (or the) scorching (or burning) sun. 달도 마찬가지로, a full moon(만월), a half moon(반달) 등.
→ 「아침, 저녁으로 쌀쌀하다」feel chilly in the morning and evening; have cool(er) mornings and evening.
(ANS) It seems as if it had been just a few days ago that we were enjoying swimming under a scorching sun, but it is already a little chilly in the morning and evening.

⇒ It is true he is young, but he is prudent for his age.

I admit he is a good player, but he cannot compare (or be compared) with his brother.
→ 「건강에 주의다는 」은 to take care of one's health 와 같이 부정사를 주어로 할 수도 있지만, it를 내세워 문장의 균형을 잡는 이 좋다.
→ 「병에 걸리는 을 지나치게 두려워하다」/be too much afraid of getting ill. 좋지 않다/ not wise; unwise; bad policy등, 「병에 걸리다」/ become ill; fall ill, get ill; be taken ill 등.
(ANS) Of course it is important (or it is of course important) to take care of one's health, but it is not wise to be too much afraid of getting ill.

[比較] look, see, watch
ex) look for violets in the spring(봄에 오랑캐꽃을 찾다)/ He refused to look in the mirror the nurse gave him.
ex) I am looking, Mother, I can't see it anywhere.
ex) animals able to see in the dark/ Once over the pass you will see the town below you.(저 고개만 넘어서면 아래에 그 마을이 보인다.)
ex) watch while a procession passes/ watch something as closely as a cat watches a mouse.

[比較] tell, relate, recount, narrate, report
Tell me what happened.
relate the story of one's life/ relate an experience/ Relate your dream to us.
recount one's adventures/ recount the events of the day/ He recounted all the happenings of the day.
narrate the story of one's life/ He narrated the history of the Forty-Niners.(그는 1849년의 금 탐광자들의 역사를 이야기했다.)
report the progress on defense projects to the cabinet/ He was assigned to report the murder trial.

[比較] warrant, warranty, guarantee, guaranty
warranted silverware/ I warrant he's telling the truth
The watch is guaranteed for a year.
This does not warrant such expenditures.

* bite off more than one can chew
- I think I've bitten off more than I can chew.

* bite off more than one can chew

Would you work the graveyard shift?
을 pay time and a half라 하고 2배를 주는 은 double time라 다.

It's anybody's guess.
그리고 in a dead heat란 말도
Your guess is as good as mine이란
My money is on Kim Dae Jwung
I'll bet on Kim Dae Jung
같은 뜻이다. money가 나온 김에 on the money란 말도 알아보면
Your guess was right on the money.
ex) If you cut your finger, it will bleeding.
He was slowly bleeding to death.

Beat it!
같은 뜻으로 get lost!, scram, split, buzz off, take a walk등
You beat me to her.
You look beat.
또 beat me는 I don't know.
cf) Leave me alone, please.

Even a worm will turn
I'm not going to take it lying down이라는 영어 표현이
Let's not take it lying down도 그냥

``The former President appears determined to face death. Maybe,

The next morning when they arrive at the ranch, George is

How would you like you eggs?

Over easy, please.
A scrambled egg, please.

Dont be a dog!
You dirty dog!
She is such a dog.
-
S.O.B가 뭔지 아시죠. son of bitch입니다.
That used refrigerator was a real dog.
The math test was a bitch.

위 표현들은 알고만 계시고 쓰시지는 마세요.^^;

The most controversial factor emerging is that the whole show appeared to be

=> I enjoyed it a lot.
=> Everything was relishes.
=> I had wonderful tine having dinner with you.

Suppose you put some bean seeds in water overnight and let other bean seeds stay dry.
You will find that only the seeds in water will swell and get soft, and the covering of these seeds will split open.
What can happen to these seeds now?
Once a seed absorbs water, the tiny plant inside it can start to grow.
It uses food stored in the seed to grow.
Suppose you remove the stored food, which is found in the bean, from a very young bean plant.
It stops growing.
It seems that seeds need food and water to grow.

One mid-July day I visited Inner Mongolia.
There were endless fields of wild flowers.
Of 1,000 species of wild flowers, 500 herbs are used to make Chinese medicines.
About 80% of all Chinese herbal medicines are from this area.
We stayed in a Mongolian tent.
The grassland around the tent was a sea of forget-me-nots, though different from the ones I know in Korea.
Their leaves and stems seem lean and weak, yet are as hard as wires.
This is to protect them from the long, dry, cold, and windy winter, and to help them to survive through to the spring.

In schools, we all learned that dinosaurs were slow and cold-blooded reptiles.
However, the opposite may be true.
New scientific evidence shows dinosaurs might have been warm-blooded animals that behaved more like mammals than reptiles.
Such a conclusion can be drawn from the following two facts.
One is the growth patterns of dinosaurs, which are more like those of warm-blooded mammals.
The other is that their body temperatures had to be higher than the air to hatch eggs.

We use and abuse chimpanzees at will for medical research, for entertainment, or simply out of personal greed.
Being blind to their suffering, we don't try to understand how similar they are to us.
Chimpanzees nurture their young and mourn their dead.
They have distinct personalities and can express a variety of emotions from love to rage.
Yet for all their similarities, we appear to think little of their pain and suffering if our interests are served.
Watching chimps lying vacant eyed with tubes dangling from their arms,
we seem to enjoy torturing the creatures who look and behave so much like ourselves.

When winter arrives, some people get sad.
Doctors have recently started to study the cause of a medical disorder that they have appropriately named SAD, or seasonal affective disorder.
People who suffer from SAD become very depressed during the winter months.
Their depression appears to be a result of a decrease in the amount of sunlight they are exposed to.
Doctors theorized that decreased sunlight affects the production of melatonin,
a hormone manufactured in the brain, and serotonin, a chemical that helps transmit nerve impulses.
Depression may result from the imbalance of two substances in the body.

Computer crime has become a big problem of the world that is likely to continue far into the future.
Computer criminals are often quite different from other kinds of criminals.
According to some experts, these criminals seem to lock themselves away from other people and live in their own fantasy “microworlds.”
They are also generally quite young.
They break into others' computers in order to steal, add, or change information.
For many of them, this is a kind of game, a part of their fantasy life.
However, it is a dangerous “game,” and, as a result, many individuals and corporations are very concerned about computer security.

suddenly decided and said out loud that his tie was like a snake around his neck.
That night on Dutch television the anchorman and the sportscaster took off their ties in support.

It's frustrating.
You're excited about the work you've just completed on your computer.
You start to print.
And suddenly it happens.
You run out of ink.
To make matters worse, when you take the empty color cartridge out of the printer and shake it, you can still hear ink inside.
Although only one color has run dry, the whole cartridge is now useless.
Obviously, throwing away unused ink translates into wasted money.
Well, the good news is that we recently introduced a system whereby each color is separated into individual ink tanks.
They're called “Eco Tanks” and they dramatically reduce a printer's running costs.

Go to any vacant lot and look around.
Under the “no dumping” signs you will find old tires, rusting sinks, junked refrigerators, and other trash.
There are also laws about the care of dogs, but some dog-owners seem to be ignorant of them.
They let their dogs run loose and do not clean up after them.
Perhaps the most disregarded of all laws are our traffic regulations.
More and more drivers are speeding, going through red lights, and double parking on the road.
And some drivers, apparently not even worrying about being fined,
have been parking in spaces clearly marked as reserved for the physically challenged.
These are some examples that show a lack of respect for the law.

Now, however, Peter Ward and Donald Brownlee claim that the conventional wisdom is wrong.
In their book, they say the search for alien life is likely to fail.
Drawing on astronomy, geology, and paleontology, they argue that humans might indeed be alone in the cosmos.
They say that science is showing the Earth’s composition and stability to be extraordinarily rare.
Almost everywhere else, the radiation levels are so high and the right chemical elements are so scarce that life cannot evolve into advanced communities.

Are you preparing for a big test?
If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the books.
Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development.
According to a doctor's research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels in the brain stronger and more fully developed.
She claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better.

Sleepwalking and sleep-talking seem to be different sleep disorders.
Sleepwalkers are capable of walking down stairs or out of doors, all the while remaining fast asleep.
Sleep-talkers, in contrast, stay still, but they effortlessly carry on long conversations.
To be sure, what they say doesn't make any sense.
Yet despite the differences, there are some similarities between the two sleep disorders.
During their walking or talking hours, neither sleepwalkers nor sleep-talkers remember what happened the night before.
Also, both disorders appear to be passed down from parents to children.

In everything you do in your family, you should keep in mind the miracle of the Chinese bamboo tree.
After the seed for this amazing tree is planted, you see nothing, absolutely nothing, for four years except for a tiny shoot coming out of a bulb.
During those four years, all the growth is underground in a root structure that spreads deep and wide in the earth.
But then in the fifth year the Chinese bamboo tree grows up to eighty feet!
Many things in family life are like the Chinese bamboo tree.
If you're patient and keep working, that “fifth year” will come, and you will be astonished at the growth and change you see taking place.

You've passed the interview and landed the job.
Now it is your first week on the job.
Is this job right for you? Is the job what you expected?
Maybe you thought you loved working alone,
but now you're stuck in a tiny office with minimal human contact,
realizing that you hate working in a secluded setting.
A job is like a marriage or having a spouse.
Sometimes you don't know it's right for you until you live with it.
So as the saying goes, “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.”

I recall watching Das Boot as originally distributed in the U.S.―in German, with English subtitles.
It was a fabulous movie, and I thought the actors' native German language contributed substantially to the feeling of compelling unreality that gave the movie such a powerful effect.
I enthusiastically took friends to see it again some months later―after it had gotten popular and was dubbed into English
―and found that the dubbing had stripped much of the movie's dramatic power.
Exiting the theater, I didn't have the same remarkable feeling I'd had with the original,
when I'd felt like I was a German sailor escaping a steel-walled watery tomb.

I recently had an encounter with a dog owner letting his large German shepherd run free around the park.
For the third time in the last month, I asked the man to restrain the dog while I ran past with my leashed dog, and he refused.
Another man who regularly plays with his dog simply stares when I ask him to restrain his dog.
Dog owners like these two men usually say their dogs are “safe.” But I've seen apparent “hellos” escalate into vicious fights between two “nice dogs.” Dog fights are brutal and bloody affairs impossible to break up without risking serious injury.
I was seriously bitten some years ago breaking up a fight between my dog and an unleashed dog, and had to have stitches and a rabies shot as a result.

Once while hearing a young lady highly praised for her beauty, I asked:
What kind of beauty do you mean?
Merely that of the body, or also that of the mind?
Many a pretty girl is like a flower which is admired for its beautiful appearance, but despised for its unpleasant odor.
It is far better to acquire beauty than to be born with it.

On June 16, I spent $600 in your store on a refrigerator, and a washing machine.
They were to be delivered to my home in Poughquag, N. Y.
Your salesman, Sam Casey, told me that shipping charges would come to about $17.
He suggested that the order be sent express collect by truck.
I agreed and paid immediately for the merchandise.
A couple of days later, he called to ask if it would be all right to ship by Railway Express.
He assured me that the charges would be about the same.
Again, I agreed.
You can imagine my feelings when the Railway Express agent called from Brewster, about twenty miles from Poughquag, to tell me that the items had arrived, and that shipping charges would be $22.
Further, that if I wished them delivered to my house, I should have to get a trucker and pay his charges, also.

Lately, it seems most of the apartment fires in my area have been caused by children playing with matches or lighters.
I don't understand why parents leave these things around where youngsters can get their hands on them.
This is gross negligence.
Kids will always be curious, but parents must do more than just tell them that fire is dangerous.

Facts are to the scientist what words are to the poet.
The scientist has a love of facts, even isolated facts, similar to the poet's love of words.
But a collection of facts is not science any more than a dictionary is poetry.
Around his facts the scientist weaves a logical pattern or theory which gives the facts meaning, order, and significance.

The question which comes first―society or the individual―is like the question about the hen and the egg.
Whether you treat it as a logical or a historical question, you can make no statement about it, one way or the other, which does not have to be corrected by an opposite, and equally one-sided, statement.
Society and the individual are inseparable; they are necessary and complementary to each other, not opposites.
'No man is an island, entire of itself,' in Donne's famous words: 'every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.'
That is an aspect of the truth.

We always leave a light when we go away at night.
It is so much nicer to come home to a lighted house than to a dark one.
It goes back, I suppose, to the years the boys were with us.
We never went to bed and turned out all the lights if one had not yet come in.
The light in the window was left as a greeting for the absent one.

Two women seated directly across from me suddenly "fell" out of their seats, landed on the floor and started to moan.
One said, "I think my neck is broken. Call a doctor."
The other yelled, "I hurt my back. Get me an ambulance."
I was stunned.
The "falls" occurred fully two minutes after the bus had stopped.
The man sitting beside me whispered in my ear.
"Those women are looking to sue to transit company for injuries.
It's gotten to be quite a racket."

Mom gave endlessly to family, friends and neighbors.
I wish I could turn the clock back and give her a fraction of what she gave to me.
I guess I was so busy being a wife and mother, I didn't pay much attention to being a daughter.

Among the aims of a university education must be included the acquisition of knowledge,
but of far greater importance are the development of intellectual curiosity and the realization that the acquisition of knowledge is pleasurable,
for the development of these qualities is a guarantee that the acquisition of knowledge will continue after the students has left the university.

Foreigners in Korea will always be foreigners to this society.
I remember how self-conscious I was.
When riding a train or a bus, I hated it because people stared.
I would try to hide behind a newspaper but the glaring eyes bored right through the newsprint.
Then, I would try smiling, but it would not work.
Nor would glaring back fiercely.

I went to public school, and because of my total lack of interest and non-attendance I was asked to leave.
I didn't want to go there in the first place.
I was taken away from all my friends.
My father must have been very pleased to get me into the school, but in the end it was a complete waste of money.
I let him down quite badly, I suppose.
I tried several jobs but I couldn't settle down in them.
They just weren't challenging enough.
Then I realized that what I really wanted to do was live in the country and look after animals, so that's what I now do.
As a family, we're not that close, either emotionally or geographically.
We don't see much of each other these days.
My father and I are totally different, like chalk and cheese.
My interests have always been the country, but his are books, music and above all, opera, which I hate.
If he does come to see me, he's in completely the wrong clothes for the country ― fur coats, nice little leather shoes, not exactly ideal for long walks across the fields.

You sound tired.

There are millions of people looking for jobs these days. But one job
consistently goes wanting-night watchman at the Hollywood Wax Museum.
Almost two dozen men held the job last year, and they all quit in fright.
It seems they started "seeing things" at night.
* see things: 헛이 보이다

Other things being equal, the simplest explanation is the best.

With Israel insisting on haveing direct talks with the Arab states on a Middle East
settlement, the possibility for a successful peace pact seems remote.

But there seems little doubt that science has been a major producer of anxiety.

Some studies indicate that the old have at least one thing in common
with the young: both seem to feel generally happier and more satisfied
with themselves and their way of life than the middle-aged.

The yak is an animal about the size of a small ox. It lives in Tibet, a province on
a high plateau in China. The inhabitants use the yak for transportation. They also
drink the yak's milk, eat its meat for food, and weave its fur into cloth. The yak is the
most useful animal in Tibet.

One needs the enemy. So, within limits, the friction, not only between individuals
but between groups, seems to me quite necessary for civilisation.

Wendy May, 34, who teaches aerobics in Atlanta, might argue that progress
comes first, then the education of the recalcitrant male:
"The discovery is not that it's sexy to be healthy but that it feels good.
I think most men are frightened by muscles, maybe even by fitness.
Now though, I don't think they have a choice. They may as well decide
it's sexy, because it's here."

Khomeini has avoided comment on the hostage issue since February, when he
turned the matter ever to Parliament. He may have decided to intervene again in a
effort to eliminate a divisive and paralyzing issue between Iran's secular moderates,
who favor a quick end to the crisis, and the religious hard-liners.

Memory-training courses are much in vogue nowadays, and it seems to be taken
for granted that the more things we remember, the happier we are.

The pleasures of memory must certainly be rated high, but I am sure
forgetfulness also plays a part in making human beings happy.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth would have given a good deal to be able to forget
the murder of Duncan, and many a politician has longed to be allowed to
forget his election pledges.
Some of the unhappiest people in the world are those who cannot forget
injuries inflicted on them in the past. Others are equally miserable, because
they cannot forget wrongs they have done others.
