* so-so는 not so good, not so bad의 준말이라 생각하여 '그저 그래'란
말이고, so와 so사이에 and가 하나 더 들어가서 so-and-so가 되면
전혀 다른 뜻이 된다. 이것은 남을 나쁘게 말하되 직설적으로
표현하지는 않고 '왜 그렇고 그런 사람 아니냐?'는 식으로 말할 때 쓴다.
예를 들면 상사가 아무것도 아닌걸 가지고 한바탕 잔소리를 하고
나간 뒤에 하는 말이 동료가 하는 말이 Don't take it seriously.

the miserable plight of the North Korean people under the hereditary
tyranny of Kim Il-sung and his son, Chong-il. Incidentally, the two
delegates from Hanchongnyon illegally sent to the North via Europe
reportedly bowed in tribute at the tomb of Kim Il-sung, laying a
bouquet there. Ironically, pro-North Korean radical student leaders
here have rarely expressed respect for any of South Korea's presidents.

or Korean Federation of University Student Councils, which organized
the fierce clashes with police that started eight days ago at Yonsei
University in Seoul, branding it a subversive body that benefits the
enemy (North Korea) and is thus in violation of the National Security
Law.

^^Most people in this country become angry thinking about the militant
students striking police with steel pipes and kicking them as they
miserably beg for mercy on their bended knees like prisoners of war.

대부분의 국민들은 경찰을 철파이프로 때리면서, 전쟁 포로처럼 무릎꿇리
고 애원하는 경찰들을 발길로 차는 거친 학생들을 바라보면서 분노하고 있

^^The violent students have mistaken ways of thinking in two respects.
The first is their hewing to an ideological line benefiting the enemy,
which is proscribed by the National Security Law. The second is their
use of violence to pursue their goals, physically challenging riot police, a
symbol of government authority, by beating them and throwing
firebombs at them.
폭력 학생들은 두가지 면에서 잘못을 범했다. 첫번 잘못은 국가보안법에
의해서 금지되고 있는 이적 이념 노선을 추종했다는 것이다. 두번째 잘못은
자신들의 목적을 달성하기 위해 국가 공권력의 상징인 전경과 물리적인 충
돌을 일으켜, 전경들을 구타하고 화염병을 던지는 등 폭력을 사용하였다는

^^There are many people who wonder why the government earlier took a
lenient attitude to a leftist student organization which it now labels as
an anti-state body benefiting the enemy. It virtually asked the illegal
organization to confront riot police, by failing to effectively control it
from the start. The students' response to the police action generated
scenes unimaginable in other countries. Some citizens have come out and
criticized the government, the national police and university
administrators as well for their inability to put the lid on the agitators
in a timely fashion.
많은 국민들은 왜 정부가 지금은 반정부 이적 단체로 규정지은 좌익운동
권학생들에 대해서 초반에 관대한 태도를 취했는지 의아해 하고 있다. 초기
부터 효과적인 통제를 못했기 때문에 그 불법단체가 실질적으로 전경과 대
치하게 만들었었던 것이다. 경찰 행동에 대항하는 학생들의 반응은 다른 나
라에서는 상상도 할 수 없는 일이다. 시민들 중에는 초반에 때맞추어 선동
세력들을 무력화시키지 못한 정부, 경찰, 그리고 대학 당국의 무능력을 질책
하고 있다.

It is fortunate that the longest and most violent student-police clashes
at Yonsei University came to an end with the police making an early
morning swoop on Hanchongnyon members holed up in one school
building and the swift exit of others from another building hours
later.
최장기간의 가장 격렬했던 연세대에서의 학생-전경 충돌이 어제 새벽 학
교 건물에 갇혀 있던 한총련 학생들에 대한 경찰의 기습과 몇 시간 후에 다
른 건물로부터 다른 학생들이 신속히 철수함으로써 막을 내리게 된 것은 다
행스런 일이다.

Hundreds of members of Hanchongnyon, the Korean Federation of
University Student Councils, were arrested. But who should take
responsibility for the many injuries on both sides of the battle-like
confrontation, the enormous damage to the school, the great
inconveniences to nearby residents and, more than anything else, the
waste of national resources on such a worthless cause?
수백명의 한총련 학생들이 구속되었다. 그러나, 시가전을 방불케 했던 충
돌에서 양측에서 발생된 많은 부상자와 학교측의 막대한 피해, 인근 주민들

In the first place, the students' objectives did not draw any support,
let alone understanding, from the significant portion of our citizens. The
asked for reunification through a confederate system and the withdrawal
of U.S. forces from this country are nothing more than outright
sympathy and respect for the North Korean leadership that has brought
their country to the brink of mass starvation in the most undemocratic
lineal inheritance of power and a disdain for their own government
that was created through a long, hard struggle for democracy.
먼저, 학생들이 목표로 삼은 것들은 시민들로부터 이해는 커녕, 전혀 지지
를 받지 못했다. 연방제를 통한 통일이나 주한 미군의 철수의 요구는 가장

mentality of these young students who account for a small minority of
the nation's total university enrollment. Still it requires deep scrutiny
of government and school authorities on how the radical ``Jusa-pa''
students got elected to leadership positions at their respective schools
and how this so-called NL (National Liberation) faction held the
hegemony in the nation's student movement through all these years.
이 나라 전체 대학생들의 극소수를 점하는 이들 젊은 학생들의 정신상태
에 대하여는 무지와 미숙이라고 하는 것이 가장 적절한 표현일 것이다. 그
러나 정부나 학교 당국은 어떻게 과격 "주사파" 학생들이 각 학교에서 지도
부에 선출이 되었는지 그리고 어떻게 소위 민족해방파가 요즈음에 들어와

Pundits point to general disenchantment of young students with the
way politics is going on and about in this country with the continuing
corruption in high places and the current administration's failure in its
professed task of reforms, in establishing political, legal and economic
justice. There are also debates that the authorities overreacted to
Hanchongnyon's annual``Unification Festival,'' causing students to resort
to the worst conceivable pattern of violence.

In a rare show of consensus, a vast majority of people in most
social sectors agree that harsh punishment should be meted out to the
participants in the violent, illegal demonstrations. Unusually, the
opposition parties have joined the government and ruling party in
condemning the militant students, who threw stones and firebombs at
riot police, beat them with steel pipes, illegally occupied university
buildings and destroyed school furniture and other fixtures.

Because there is solid popular support for a quick crackdown on the
student rioters, the law-enforcement authorities have the opportunity to

government will hardly evade public censure if it exhibits the same
half-heartedness and indecisiveness which it showed coping with the
law violators in the past.

There is little denying that the authorities wavered over the degree
of punitive action to take against the militant students. Their decision to

Professors also have to share part of the blame. Most professors have
taken a nonchalant attitude to the problem, avoiding any ideological

With the police crackdown on student protesters at Yonsei providing
momentum, the government should now move to dismantle
Hanchongnyon and other pro-Pyongyang organizations, as it promised.
Also in order are long-range steps to prevent college campuses from

연세대 점거 학생들의 단속을 계기로 삼아, 정부는 공언 한대로, 한총련과
기타 친 북한 단체들을 해체시켜야 할 것이다. 다음에 할 일은 장기 대책을
세워 학원이 좌익분자들의 "온상"이 되는 것을 막는 일이다.
During the nine-day standoff, thousands of radical students and even
a larger number of riot police fought each other, exchanging volleys of
tear gas, petrol bombs and stones, and blows with steel pipes and
billy clubs. Hundreds on both sides were injured and in the aftermath,
a riot policeman died of the head injury he received from a rock thrown
by a student.
9일간의 대치 중에, 수천 명의 운동권학생들과 더 많은 수의 전경들이 최

When it comes to government responsibility, President Kim will have
to share his part for his failure to manifest an official position on

students, uncertain whether to follow a hawkish or dovish policy.

Kim called on educators to deal with problematic students with
greater courage and to sternly reprimand them for their misconduct

puberty 또는 adolescence 라고 합니다.
약 13에서 18세까지의 나이사이로 teenager라고도 합니다.
주로 대부분 사춘기 청소년들은 중고등학교 학생들이 이에 속합
니다. 이 시기는 정신적, 신체적 성숙이 활발한 시기로 성인이

# Journalism 101 (One O One)
journalism 101은 journalism 원론이란 말입니다. 대학교 1학년생들이
신문방송학 과정 맨 처음에 배우는 원론 강의의 코드번호를 가리켜서
journalism 101..이렇게 이야기 하죠.
미국대학에서는 curriculum강좌 번호를 적을때에는 인문이나 개론 강의는
101로 표시합니다. 예를 들어 정치학 입문은 Politics 101, 경제학입문은
Economics 101..이런식으로 나타내죠.
본래 대학마다 차이는 있겠지만요 대체적으로 미국대학에는 백단위로
시작하는 것은 대학교 1학년의 교과과정이고 이백단위(201,222..)는
대학교 2학년과정, 삼백단위는 3학년과정, 사백단위는 대학교 4학년
과정.. 그리고 육백이나 팔백단위는 석사과정에서 박사과정 (박사과정은
구백단위도 있죠).. 이런 식으로 교과과목이름앞에 놓지요.
예를 들어 journalism 101은 대학교 1학년생이 듣는 강좌가 되겠고
journalism 910은 박사과정의 학생들이 듣는 과목.. 이런식으로
숫자로 구분하는 경우가 많습니다. 이렇게 대학강좌 가운데서 입문,
또는 개론을 나타내던 101은 그 뜻이 발전해서 각 학문의 원론이나 기초
라는 뜻 이외에도 기본상식이라는 의미로도 사용됩니다
