I sat down on a box.
The thought of having to move to an unfamiliar city brought tears to my eyes.
That night I could not sleep, thinking about how much I hated this move.

There are a huge number of people who just cannot resist bargains and sales.
So long as they think they are getting a bargain, they will buy clothes they will never wear, furniture they have no space for.
Old ladies will buy inline skates and non-smokers will buy pipe-cleaners.
And I once heard of a man who bought an electric circular saw as a bargain and cut off two of his fingers the next day.
But he had no regrets: the saw had been truly cheap.

Mae, a Chinese student, appeared in the dormitory room with a bruise on the face.
She felt she was ignored because her American roommate didn't mention it at all.
The wounded student thought that her silent roommate didn't notice or didn't care.
But the American student was purposely not paying attention, thinking Mae might not want to talk about it.
She let the Chinese friend decide whether or not to mention it.
She was being considerate by not imposing, which was the American style.
But Mae, based on the Chinese style, couldn't understand why her roommate didn't care.

Success is the act of trying to improve upon the things you're already doing.
It's growing and developing.
It's accepting bigger and greater challenges.
It's not being afraid of making a mistake, suffering a setback, or failing.
It's trying to do your very best.
And if, in the end, your very best wasn't quite good enough, you just have to go back to work and prepare a bit harder for the next time.
Nobody succeeds 100 percent in anything they do.
When you're able to recognize and accept this fact of life, you realize that failure and losing are as much a part of the game of life as are success and winning.

Suddenly compact discs with titles such as “The Mozart Effect” and “Baroque for Baby” began appearing in stores.
Many parents seemed to believe that if their babies heard Mozart's music, their IQs might increase.
It was called “The Mozart Effect.” But there is no evidence that playing Mozart to babies will raise their IQs.
The original study in 1993 showed only that spatial-temporal abilities of college students who participated in the experiment temporarily increased.
And no one else has been able to show the same result.
Even the researchers who performed the study never claimed it would increase a baby's IQ.
If you want to buy “The Mozart Effect” CDs, just go ahead.
But it is foolish to expect “The Mozart Effect” to be real.
갑자기 “The Mozart Effect”나 “Baroque for Baby” 라는 이름의 음반들이 상점에 등장하고 있다.

Snowboarding was one of the first extreme sports, and many people thought that the first snowboarders were troublemakers.
Skiers didn't like them because their clothes were different and they didn’t always follow the rules.
Many ski resorts didn't allow snowboarding in the 1980s.
Today, however, most ski resorts welcome snowboarders.
Some even have special areas where snowboarders can jump over things and try new tricks.

An old man got on a train with a gorgeous hat his son bought for him.
A young man beside him saw the hat on his lap and said, “Look, how elegant it is! Where did you get it?”
The old man said, “My son bought it at H. S. department store for me.”
The young man stealthily slipped his calling card into the hat and yelled,
“A few weeks ago, I bought the same hat at H. S. department store
and stuck my calling card inside the hat, but the hat was stolen the other day.
Now I see the calling card in your hat, so it must be mine.
Now give it back to me.”
The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
“In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!

When my grandmother began to have problems in seeing, hearing and walking, a number of family meetings were held.
We discussed what we should do for her.
We talked of placing her in a nursing home, but that idea was quickly given up.
Although my grandmother would be with more people of her own age, she would see even less of her family, and that would break her heart.
Mother would not allow her own mother to grow old and weak in a strange place.
She said, “I will not let Grandmother end up in a nursing home,”
and I admire my mother greatly for this decision.
It was not an easy decision for her.
When so many others are running away from the problem of what they should do about their old parents, my mother stands out remarkably.

I was working as a short-order cook at two restaurants in the same neighborhood.
On a Saturday night, I was finishing up the dinner shift at one restaurant and hurrying to report to work at the second place.
But I was delayed because one table kept sending back an order of hash browns, insisting they were too cold.
I replaced them several times, but still the customers were dissatisfied.
When I was able to leave, I raced out the door and arrived at my second job.
A server immediately handed me my first order.
“Make sure these hash browns are hot,” she said,
“because these people just left a restaurant down the street that kept serving them cold ones."

Some years ago, Fortune magazine conducted a survey of many of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.
The goal was to try to find traits that these successful people had in common.
Surprising to say, there weren't many! Some of these top executives had gone to excellent universities, others not.
Some brought years of experience to their jobs, while others had enjoyed a quicker rise to success.
One of the few things they shared was that, along the way, they had each experienced a major career setback.
Most of them, in fact, had been fired from at least one job.
Understandably, none of them at the time felt they had been treated fairly.
Dwelling on life's unfairness and cruelties will not make your life better.
Those CEOs learned to move beyond setbacks.
We might even conclude that, without confrontation with negative events, they would not be where they are today.

When the Spanish conqueror Pizarro transferred the capital of Peru from a site in the mountains 11,000 feet above sea level to lowland Lima,
it wasn't just for a change of scenery.
The Spanish conquerors observed that domestic animals taken to the mountains failed to reproduce.
And for over 50 years after the Spanish brought their wives and settled in the Andes,
no Spanish children were born in any of the higher altitudes.
The Indians, however, were fertile in the same climate.
The difference was that over the 9,000 years that the Indians had lived in the Andes,
they had developed enlarged lungs, a high red blood cell count, and lower blood pressure,
all of which made it possible for them to live normal lives at high altitudes.

When Angela moved to our small town, everything started to change.
At the time, some members of the town's swimming club, including myself, were preparing for the National Championships,
which were just six months away.
I had always been the best, and everyone thought that I would be chosen for the relay race.
But now I had the new competition.
There was only one place for the butterfly on the relay team, and we both wanted it.
For two weeks it was awful.
Angela was always the star.
She was faster than I, and her form was better, too.
My chances of being selected were disappearing fast.
My fear caused me to be unfriendly to Angela.
I refused to speak to her and never said anything good about her.
Angela

Before Social Security existed, Americans worried that they would not be able to support themselves if they lost their jobs.
A worker who lost his job could turn to local groups that provided charity or relief, but many Americans were ashamed to ask for help.
Then in 1935 Congress passed the Social Security Act.
This law said that almost all workers had to pay a small part of their income to a special government fund.
Then if the worker lost his job, the government would pay him money out of the fund.
Now Americans knew that if they lost their jobs, they would still be able to survive.
And they were not ashamed to take Social Security because they knew that they had already worked to earn it.

A twelfth-century couple, Heloise and Abelard, is often mentioned when romantic love becomes the subject of scholarly discussion.
When they met, Heloise was the niece of a wealthy scholar.
Abelard was the most famous teacher in France.
Older and vastly more educated, Abelard became the girl's tutor.
The two fell in love.
When Heloise bore a son, they married in secret.
The couple did not want Abelard's career to be hurt by scandal.
However, when Heloise's uncle found out what happened, he forced the girl to become a nun.

A century of volcanic inactivity of the mountain had made the village people think it nothing to worry about.
Unfortunately it exploded with the force of 10 million tons of TNT one morning.
The top of the mountain was blown away completely and a thick carpet of ash covered the landscape.
Trees were scattered about like tooth-picks.
There was no sign of life.
Most people believed that decades, even centuries, would pass before the land would recover.
However, nature proved to be far more resilient than expected.
The return of life was remarkable.
Today the bush carpets the ground and wildlife is abundant.
A forest of young trees graces the slopes and valleys below the volcano,
and a delicate beauty has returned once more to this vast wilderness area.

A group of researchers observed kindergarteners playing with crayons.
The kids seemed to enjoy it with great concentration and apparent pleasure for internal reasons.
Next, the researchers promised some of the children “Good Player Awards” for their drawing efforts with the crayons.
For one week, these children knew they would get a “prize” at the end of the week for their drawing behavior.
For the remaining children, no such promises were made.
There was a significant change in the crayon use among the kids promised external rewards.
Surprisingly, they spent much less time playing with crayons than before.
By contrast, the other children maintained their normal frequency and duration of use.

After we had eaten, my husband asked me if I would please get him a soft drink.
I obligingly got him a soft drink and thought nothing of it.
Much to my astonishment, I soon found myself defending my actions.
I received a severe tongue lashing from the other women for "waiting on my husband."
I was told that I should have instructed him to go and get the drink himself.

Prayer For Bad Times
Dear God: Help me be a good sport in this game of life.
I don't ask for an easy place in the lineup.
Put me anywhere you need me.
I only ask that I can give you 100 percent of everything I have.
If all the hard drives seem to come my way, I thank you for the compliment.
Help me remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle.
-
And, help me, Lord, to accept the bad breaks as part of the game.
May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do.
Help me study the Book so I'll know the rules.
-
Finally, God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I'm benched for sickness or old age, help me to accept that as part of the game, too.
Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw deal.
And when I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels.
All I want is to believe in my heart that I played as well as I could and that didn't let you down.

The ability to concentrate and to use your time well is everything if you want to succeed in business―or almost anywhere else, for that matter.
Ever since college I've always worked hard during the week while trying to keep my weekends free for family and recreation.
Except for periods of real crisis I've never worked on Friday night, Saturday, or Sunday.
Every Sunday night I get the adrenaline going again by making an outline of what I want to accomplish during the upcoming week.
It's essentially the same schedule I developed at Lehigh.

We have two daughters, five years apart.
We did not put aside money for their college education because we were pretty well set and didn't think it would be necessary.
Luckily, we were right.

The problems of the nation's cities―pollution, crime, riots, a lack of planning, transportation―are bad, but they were worse in the so-called "good old days," according to Dr. Charles Adrian.
He gives pollution from automobiles as one example.
He agrees that it may be bad now, but he states that there was a lot of pollution from horses and other animals in American cities in the 19th century.
"Most cities had their own slaughterhouses where cows and pigs were killed a century ago.
They were careless about throwing out the remains of the animals and that sort of thing," he said.
"And the sewer system for waste disposal was almost nonexistent."

The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years.
Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do rape and other violent attacks.
Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: it is a weekend crime.
It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, burglary has a different cycle.
You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on a Saturday night in December, January, or February.
The most uncriminal month of all? May―except for one strange statistic.
More dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year.

"You're blocking the way, sir," said the usher to a man sprawled in the aisle of a movie theater.
"Please get up."
The man didn't move or reply.
The usher called the manager over, who said, "I must ask you to move."
Still the prone man didn't reply.
So the manager called the police.
"Get up or I'll have to take you in," the officer said.
"Where did you come from anyway?"
The man stirred finally and said, "The balcony."

If you haven't done so already, I, as one of your friends, would like to give you some food for thought:
First, being single isn't so bad.
You can be married and still be plenty lonely, especially when your partner is not there for you.
I hope you will not let the fear of singlehood drive you to make the biggest mistake of your life.
Second, love can be killed.
It can be chipped away, piece by piece, until there is nothing left.
This process can go unnoticed until everything falls apart.
The easiest way to destroy love is to keep taking it and give nothing in return.

Twenty years ago, I returned from Vietnam to find that my brother had spent every check I had sent home.
He was supposed to be putting my money in a savings account, and it never dawned on me that he would be doing anything else with my checks.
I trusted him completely and never asked for proof of any kind.

Imagine what it would be like to wake up and find yourself in a metal box.
This is what happened to a man in South Africa who had been in a car accident.
The doctors thought he was dead, so he was put in the metal box.
He remained there, unconscious, for two days.
Then, he woke up and shouted for help.
The people who heard him were at first somewhat frightened.
But then they realized that he was alive and they let him out of the box.
He was happy to be alive and free.
However, his happiness did not last long.
His girlfriend refused to see him because she did not believe that he was really alive.
She said he was a ghost who came back from the dead to frighten her.

People waste a surprising amount of money on gadgets and doodads that they hardly ever use.
For example, my brother spent $25 on an electric ice-cream maker two years ago, but he has used it on only three occasions.
Yet, he insists that regardless of the number of times he actually uses the ice-cream maker, the investment was a good one because he has purchased the ice-cream maker for the convenience of having it available if and when he needs it.
* doodad n. 장치, 잡동사니

Now, six months later, it has broken again.
We took it back to ABC.
They are no longer carrying your typewriter, but they assured us that the guarantee is still good and suggested that we write you for further instructions as to what steps to take.

This story shows that government agencies are made up of people and people go out of their way to help others.
It's one of the things that makes us human.
Nobody expected David Gooding to set aside his weekend plans.
He just did.

When I re-dialed, the same voice told me I still had the wrong number.
As I started to apologize profusely, the woman interrupted me.
"Please don't apologize," she said.
"I'm sitting by the window with a cup of coffee enjoying a truly beautiful sunrise.
If you hadn't awakened me, I would have missed it."

In searching for frogs, which were rather scarce, he saw a big garden snake with a frog in its mouth, but the snake would not release it.
He did not know what to do.
As he looked around, he noticed an old whiskey bottle on the shore that someone had tossed aside and it still had some whiskey in it.
He grabbed the bottle and poured the leftover whiskey on the snake's head.
The snake finally coughed up the frog.

A half hour later, he came by and insisted that I accept two large pieces of chicken from his own lunch bag.
It was the most delicious meal I'd ever had.
After that feast, I dozed off.
Thank heavens he woke me up in time to get off and catch the train at Barstow.
If he hadn't awakened me, I never would have made it.

Last night there was a long and detailed personal message on my machine from a teacher explaining why "David" had been transferred to her class.
There were some comments about his unacceptable behavior and a request that I call the school to discuss the problem.
The caller did not mention the name of the school and there was no number, so I was unable to let her know that she had reached the wrong person.
When that mother does not return the call, the teacher will assume she is not interested, which will be a black mark against her.

A parent decreed one Christmas that she was no longer going to remind her children of their thank-you-note duties.
As a result, their grandmother never received acknowledgments of the generous checks she had given.
The next year things were different, however.
"The children came over in person to thank me," the grandparent told a friend triumphantly.
"How wonderful!" the friend exclaimed.
"What do you think caused the change in behavior?"
"Oh, that's easy," the grandmother replied.
"This year I didn't sign the checks."

Once upon a time, the animals organized a school.
They adopted a curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying.
All animals took all the subjects.
The duck was excellent in swimming, better in fact than his instructor, and made excellent grades in flying, but he was very poor in running.
Since he was low in running he had to stay after school and also drop swimming to practice running.
This was kept up until his feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming.
But average was acceptable in school, so nobody worried about that except the duck.
The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustrations in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the tree-top down.
He also developed charley horses from over-exertion and he got poor grades in climbing and running.
The eagle was a problem child.
In climbing class he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way of getting there.
He had to be disciplined severely.
The rabbit started at the top of the class in running, but had a nervous breakdown because of so much time spent in making up for his poor performance in swimming and flying.
So he dropped out of school and started his own private school for running and hopping.

Under no circumstances should you give your 16-year-old daughter permission to smoke.
Explain in detail WHY smoking is dangerous to her health, not to mention what it does to her breath, teeth and clothes.
If she ignores your counsel, continues to smoke and 25 years from now develops terminal lung cancer, you will at least know that you didn't give her your blessing to kill herself.

As the railroad conductor entered our car, my friend discovered he had left his ticket at home.
Trying to joke his way out of the awkward situation, my friend told the conductor, "I'm not a dishonest guy. Look, my face is my ticket."
The conductor didn't miss a beat.
"And my duty," he said, "is to punch every ticket."

The story goes that Alfred once took refuge in the cottage of a poor
peasant. The good wife was left in ignorance of his identity and therefore had
little time for this seemingly idle fellow. For Alfred spent his time gazing
into the fire and dreaming of further plans to defeat the Danes. Called upon
some errand, the good wife drew his attention to some cakes which were baking in
front of the fire, and told him that he must watch them carefully during her
absence. Alas! So preoccupied was the English king that the good wife found, on
her return, nothing but a few remains of her cakes. Whereupon, the angry woman
seized the royal hair and proceeded to scold him severely. So runs the story.
Whether it is truth or legend we cannot confirm.

But once away from home, he made not even a token effort to fashion a social life.

I said nothing that made him angry.

Women did not have the right to vote until 1920, but woman suffrage did not,
as many men predicted, merely double the total number of votes cast
on each side of a question, with the women voting the same as their husbands.
Instead, women began to study the issues and candidates and make up
their own minds.

A mother took her daughter to a great artist to have her portrait painted
and when the work was at length finished they went to see ti. The artist put it before
them and the mother looked at it, her face expressing displeasure, and said not one word.
Nor did the artist open his lips, and at last the girl, to break the uncomfortable
silence, said, "Where shall we hang it, Mother?" And the lady replied,"Just where
you like, my dear, so long as you hang it with the face to the wall."

The Greeks made no formal distinction between philosophical thought
and natural sciences.

Bing Crosby writes of an experience he had while traveling by train through the
Southwest many years ago.
Our train was stopped, and we were told there'd be a wait, so I walked up and down
the track behind the train. The rear brakeman, a hard-bitten little Texan, was walking
up and down, too, swinging his lantern. He came up to me and said,"They tell me that
rascal Bim Crosland's aboard. They say he's quite a singer, but as far as
I'm concerned, Larry Ross could run him in a gopher hole."
I agreed with him and thought no more of it. In the morning, there came a knock
on our door. It was the brakeman. He eyed me with a twinkle and said, "You
hoaxed me, didn't you? You're Bim Crosland yourself! Just for that, you've got to
sign my book."
So I signed it:"Bim Crosland."

I did know Nehru at all intimately; in fact, I did not even meet him many times. But
his personality made an immediate impression at one's first meeting with him, and this
impression did not change over the years. Nor was the effect he made just an impression
;the word is weak and too cold. "Captivation" comes nearer to the truth. Here was a human
being who could win one's heart and keep it.
