위의 보기는 가장 기본적인 숫자 읽는 방법입니다. 보기 중, thousand
와 million에 의해서 끊어지는 부분을 특히 주의해야 합니다.

일상회화 속에 자주 등장하는 숫자 중, 건물의 번지수와 호텔,여관
등의 호실을 읽는 것은 필수 입니다. 그 읽는 방법을 다음에서 알아봅

위의 보기를 다시 이용해 보면, 먼저 1과 2처럼 3자리 숫자로 되어
있는 것은, 1) one twenty 2) three fifty-nine과 같이 백자리와 십자
리를 나누어 읽습니다. 4자리 숫자가 되면 3) twenty-eight, ninety-
eight로 읽는데, 4)처럼 십자리 숫자가 0인 경우에는 fifteen-on-six로
읽고, 5)처럼 십자리 이하가 모두 0일 경우에는 seventeen hundred로
읽습니다. 연도를 읽을 때도 역시 이 방법을 사용합니다. 또한 사람에
따라서는 숫자를 하나씩 읽기도 하는데, 1)을 one-two zero [oh]로 읽
는다든지, 3)을 two-eight-nine-eight로 읽는다는 뜻입니다. 6)의 경우
처럼 5자리 숫자의 경우에도 이것이 미국의 우편번호에 쓰인 것이라면,
four-seven-three-zero[oh]-nine처럼 숫자를 하나씩 읽습니다.
전화나 크레디트 카드의 번호가 03-123-4567일 경우, 그 읽는 방법은
다음과 같이 3가지가 쓰일 수 있습니다.
1) zero[oh]-three,one-two-three,four-five-six-seven

1) 소수의 경우는 소수점을 'point'라고 읽고 숫자는 그대로 읽습니다.

그러나 $35.9 라는 가격을 읽을 경우, 다음과 같은 읽는 방법이 있습

2) 분수의 경우는 분자를 기수로, 분모를 서수로 읽으며,분자가 2이상
일 때는 복수형으로 읽어줍니다. 또한 ½은 half로, ¼은 quarter로

미국에는 여러 종류의 파티가 있지요. 그리고 이런 파티가 미국사
람들의 생활에서 차지하는 비중도 크고요. bridal shower와 baby sho-
wer도 미국에서 처음 생긴 파티인데 여기서 shower는 '소나기가 내리
듯 선물을 잔뜩 주다'는 의미로 쓰인 말입니다. bridal shower와 baby
shower만 shower 라고 부르는 이유는 이 두가지만 주인공에게 선물을
주기 위해서 모이는 파티이기 때문이지요. 다시 한 번 정리해서 소개
하자면 bridal shower라는 것은 신부가 결혼하기 전에 여자 친구들이
열어주는 파티지요. 친구들은 사전에 신부가 새 살림에 필요한 물건들
을 리스트로 작성해서 리스트에 있는 물건을 하나씩 선물로 준비해 옵
니다. 그리고 baby shower는 출산을 한 달 정도 앞둔 시점에서 대부모
가 될 친구가 tea party를 개최하게 되고 파티에 참석한 사람들은 아
기 선물을 하나씩 준비 해 오게 되지요. 그래서 소나기 내리듯 선물을
잔뜩 주자는 의미입니다.
☞ 에릭과 덱스터는 한참 놀다가 집으로 돌아오는 길에 에릭을 호모라
고 놀려대는 타일러와 그의 친구들을 만나게 된다. 에릭은 타일러에게
시비를 걸고 화가 나서 덤비는 타일러를 보고 에릭은 큰돌을 집어든다

ring the changes는 '같은 말을 여러 번 바꾸어 말하다'
이 표현은 17세기에 인기를 끌기 시작했던 타종법 (종을 치는 방법)의
기술에서 나온 것 입니다. to ring the changes 라고 하는 말의 change는
종을 울리는 순서를 의미하지요. 즉 4개의 종으로 연주를
하는 웨스트 민스텀 차임에서는 종이 4개일 경우는 24개의 변화가 가
능하고 5개의 종으로 연주를 할 때에는 무려 120 가지의 종을 울리는
순서가 정해져 있지요. 그러니까 종의 수가 하나씩 늘어갈 때마다 가
능한 체인지 (종을 울리는 순서의 수) 의 수는 큰 폭으로 증폭이 되는
데 참고로 교회의 종으로 한 연주 가운데에서 가장 많은 수의 체인지
가, 즉 종을 울리는 순서는 무려 16000개까지 있었다고 합니다. 아홉
시간 이상에 걸쳐 연주를 했다고 하네요. 이렇게 같은 수의 종으로 연
주를 하지만 순서에 변화를 주면 여러가지의 다른 멜로디를 연주할 수
있는 것 처럼 우리가 하는 말에도 같은 의미를 표현하는 방법에는 여
러가지가 있겠지요. 그래서 to ring the changes는 '같은 말을 여러번
변화해서 말하다' 라고 사용이 되는 것 입니다.
