[比較] correct, accurate, exact, precise, right
exact는 correct보다 의미가 강하다. exactly correct란 표현은 있으나, ＊correctly exact라고 말하지는 않는다. accurate는 correct하기 위해서 주의를 기울였다는 뜻을 암시한다. 또한 precise는 exact의 뜻으로 학술용어로도 곧잘 쓰인다.
[比較] use, employ, utilize, exploit, work
use는 일반적인 말로 한 사물을 자기의 목적을 달성하기 위한 수단이나 도움으로 삼는 것을 말한다.

사람에 관해서 쓰이는 경우에는 사람을 수동적인 물건으로 보는 데서 흔히 치욕적인 의미를 갖고 있고 이기적이고 흉한 뜻을 암시한다.

[셔츠]라는 말은 영어의 shirt 에서 온 말인것은 누구나 안다.
우리는 그말을 와이셔츠,내의,티셔츠....를 가리키는 말로 쓰지만
그쪽 사람들과 대화할 때 셔츠라고만 해서는 좀 애매해진다.
영어에서 그 구별을 하기 위해서는 딴 말과 함께 사용해야 명확해
진다. 내의는 T-shirt 또는 undershirt,와이셔츠는 dress shirt,
스포츠 셔츠는 sports shirt,트레이너와 같은 셔츠는 sweat-shirt
라고 한다.
우리가 런닝셔츠라고 하는 소매없는 내의는 영국에서는 vest 라고
한다. 미국에서는 sleeveless undershirt 라고 한다. 미국에서
vest 라고 하면 양복의 조끼를 뜻하므로 조심해야 한다.
영국에서는 이 조끼를 waistcoat 라고 한다.
여성의 경우는 별로 shirt 라는 말을 쓰지 않는다. 속옷의 경우
lingerie 나 undies 라 한다.

뜻밖이라는 의미로 가벼운 놀람을 나타낼 때, 흔히 우리는
" 그래요 ? "라고 합니다. 이러한 경우에, 영.미국인들은
" Is that so ? "/ " Is that right ? "/ " How interesting! "
등을 쓰는데, 특히 " How interesting ! "을 많이 사용합니다.
이 외에도 상대방의 말에 의외(意外)라는 뜻을 가볍게 전달할
때에는, " Oh, are you ? " / " Oh, doesn't he ? "등을 쓰기도
합니다. 이 반응 표현은 상대방이 말한 문장의 주어와 동사를
그대로 반복 사용하며, 긍정.부정.시세까지도 똑같이 사용한다
는 특징이 있습니다. 예를 들어, " I am worn out. "(몹시 피곤
해) "라고 말했을 경우에는 그 반응 표현으로 " Oh,are you ? "
를 쓸 수 있다는 것이며,"He doesn't know the ABC of English."
(그 사람은 영어의 영자도 몰라.)"라는 말에 " Oh,doesn't he ?"
정도로 반응을 보일 수 있다는 말입니다. 이런 식의 반응을 보이
기 위해서는 상대가 말하는 문장의 주어와 동사를 정확히 알아
들어야만 되기 때문에 특별한 주의력이 필요하며, 대화 도중 의
식적으로 이런 반응표현들을 사용하면 듣기 훈련에도 좋은 도움
이 될 것입니다.
그 밖의 놀라는 반응표현 중에 " Really ? "가 있습니다. 이것
은 끝을 어떻게 올리는냐에 따라 강한 놀라움과 약한 놀라움이
결정 됩니다. 그리고 놀라움의 정도가 심할 때 쓰는 반응표현으
로 " That's news to me. " / " I didn't know that. "
" What ? " / " No kidding. "
등을 들 수가 있습니다.
미국인이 많이 쓰는 표현 중에 " Give me a break ! "를 주목할
필요가 있는데, 이것은 여간해서는 해석하기가 쉽지 않은 표현입
니다. 이 표현은 정상적으로 봐서는 이래야 되는데 그렇지 못하
다거나, 예상외로 정도가 심한 결과가 발생했다거나, 터무니 없
는 농담으로 사람을 당황하게 만든다거나, 기본적인 이해력이나
습관에서 발생하는 일반적인 행동으로부터 벗어난 상태를 접할
때, 쓰입니다. " 무슨 소리야. 농담하지 말고 똑바로 얘기해 봐."
또는 " 너무 그러지 마시고, 사정 좀 봐 주세요. " 정도로 해석
하면 됩니다.
1) 나는 급행열차 시간에 대도록 역으로 부지런히 갔다.
'시간에 대다'는 be in time for.
'부지런히 가다' hurry.

(주의) be in time (시간에 대다)처럼 무의지(無意志) 동사
앞에는 in order to 보다도 so as to 를 흔히 사용
합니다.
2) 나는 첫차를 타려고 다섯시에 일어았다.
'첫차' the first train. '타다'는 '잡다'로 생각해서 catch
로 하는 것이 좋습니다. 또한 '~하려고' 하는 목적을 뚜렷이
하기 위해서는 catch 앞에 in order to 를 붙입니다.

(주의) in order to 는 흔히 catch (타다)와 같은 의지동사
앞에 씁니다.

buck은 이곳에서 멈춘다는 말이다. 그런데 이말은 원래 있었던 관용
어구인 Pass the buck.을 변형시켜 만든 표현으로 더 이상의 책임전
가는 없다. 내가 모든 책임을 진다.는 표현이다.
Pass the buck하는 얘기는 poker에서 나온 표현이다. poker에서는
돌아가면서 패를 돌리는데, 패를 돌리는 사람을 dealer라고 부른다.
보통 dealer가 누구인지 확실하게 밝히기 위해서 dealer앞에다가
buck이라고 불리우는 작은 표를 놓게 된다. 그런데 사람들은 dealer
가 되는 것을 별로 달가와하지 않는 편이었는데, 왜냐하면 poker의
dealer는 급한 poker game의 종류를 정해야하고, 패를 돌려야하고,
또 가장 먼저 betting(돈을 거는것)을 해야하기 때문이었다.
바로 여기서 Pass the buck.이란 표현이 나오게 되었는데, 이말은
dealer를 상징하는 표를 넘기다. 다시 말하면 dealer의 책임을 넘기
다라는 뜻이다.
오늘날 Pass the buck.이란 말은 일반적으로 남에게 책임을 전가시
키다, 책임을 회피하다라는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
따라서 이와 정반대의 표현인 The buck stops here.는 스스로 모든
책임을 지겠다는 말이 되는 것이다.

자기 자신보다는 다른사람의 상황을 정당화 시켜주기 위해서 혹은 정
의를 실현하기 위한 목적에서 실행하는 처벌이나 보복을 의미하고요.
revenge
자기 자신의 개인적인 동기를 가지고 정의보다는 자기 만족을 위한것
으로 상대방에 대해서 악의나 원한을 가지고 복수하고자 하는 의미에
서 처벌, 보복하는 것이죠.
OK라는 말을 좀 귀엽게 변형한 말이 Okey-doke(y)입니다. 일본말은 아닙니
