출근 시간이 지나 배차 간격도 늘어났을 테니 극장까지 가려면
꽤나 시간이 걸릴 것 같다. 한 정거장만 가면 되는데… 오늘 왜
일이 자꾸 꼬이지? 시간은 시간대로 늦고 돈만 버리고, 되는 일이
없네. 차라리 뛰어갈 걸 그랬나 보다. 10여분이 지나자 열차가
들어오는 소리가 들렸다. 사람들이 우루루 열차문 앞에 몰렸다.
뒤에 있던 한 뚱뚱이 아줌마가 내린다음 타라는 안내방송에는
아랑곳 하지 않은채 내리는 사람들사이를 비집고 들어갔다.
It was passed the rush hour and they must have increased the
train intervals. It would take much longer than usual to get
to the theater, I thought. Shit! The theater was just a stop
away. What a day! Wasted time and money for nothing! At this
point I began to think that I should have tried running to
the theater. After about 10 minutes, I heard the next train
pulling in. People didn't bother to line up and stormed
towards the train. The PA system cranked out a warning to get
on the train in an orderly fashion, but that didn't prevent
the fat lady behind me from jumping the line and forcing her
way through the crowd.
1. It was passed the rush hour: 어느 시점을 두고 그 시점을
지났다고 할 때 It is passed ~를 씁니다.
2. They must have increased the train intervals: Train
intervals는 열차 배차 간격을 말합니다.
Must have + 과거분사는 "분명히 무엇무엇했을 것이다"라는
추정을 말하는 것이구요.
She must have missed the train, or she should be here by now.
열차를 놓친 게 분명해, 안 그러면 지금쯤 왔을 텐데.
3. It would take much longer than usual: 여기서 would를 쓴
것은 "아마도 그럴 것이다"의 의미입니다. Will에도 추정의
의미가 있습니다.
4. Get to the theater: 도착하다는 arrive를 흔히 쓰지만,
구어체에서는 get to가 더 일반적이지요.
When you get there, please call me.
거기 도착하거든 전화 좀 해.
5. For nothing: 거저라는 의미지요. 여기서는 소득도 없이
시간과 돈을 낭비했다는 의미입니다. Good for nothing이라는
말도 있는데요 아무짝에도 쓸모 없다는 말입니다.
You're good for nothing.
이 아무짝에 쓸모없는 놈아.
6. Pulling in: 자동차나 기차 등이 서서히 자기쪽으로 오는 것을
pull in한다고 합니다. 여기서는 플랫폼으로 들어오는 것을
말하지요.
7. Didn't bother to line up: 줄을 서려고 애쓰지 않았다는
말이지요. Bother는 원래 일부러 수고를 해서 무엇무엇한다는
뜻입니다.
예를 들어, 누군가 귀찮은 걸 무릅쓰고 도와주려 한다면,
Please, don't bother. It's too much of a hassle.
아이, 안그러셔도 됩니다. 너무 귀찮은 일이잖아요.
부정의 의미로 쓰이면, "신경을 전혀 쓰지 않는다"의 의미가
됩니다.
Line up은 줄을 선다는 뜻입니다.
8. Stormed towards the train: Storm은 폭풍우를 말합니다.
폭풍우가 몰아치 듯이 와르르 몰려드는 것도 storm이지요.

사채업자들이 사무실로 몰려들었다.
9. The PA system cranked out a warning: PA는 public
announcement의 약자입니다.
Crank out은 시끄럽게 내질르는 걸 말하지요. 무더기로
생산한다는 의미도 있지요.
Crank it up이라는 말도 잘 쓰는 데요. 볼륨을 높이라는
뜻입니다.
10. Jumping the line: 새치기하는 걸 말합니다. 줄을 건너 뛰는
것이지요.
Jump the queue는 영국식 영어지요. Jump the gun이라는 말도
있습니다. 달리기 선수들이 총을 쏘기도 전에 뛰어나가는 걸
말하지요. 비유적으로도 씁니다.
11. Force one's way through: 동사 + one's way + 전치사 형태는
유용하게 쓸 수 있는 구문입니다. 한번 살펴볼까요?
He forced his way through the crowd.
사람들을 헤집고 들어갔다.
He elbowed his way into the bus.
팔꿈치로 밀고 버스 안으로 들어갔다.
He felt his way out of the room.
(어둠속에서) 더듬거리며 방을 빠져나갔다.
웬만한 타동사는 모두 이렇게 만들 수 있지요. 숙어라고 외우지
마시고 응용을 해보세요.
She kept up the relationship with them. (그 사람이들이랑 계속

자주 만나지는 못하더라도 편지나 전화 등으로 연락을 하면 관계는 유지되지요.
그렇게 관계를 유지하는걸 keep up the relationship (with someone)이라고 합니다.
그냥 keep up with someone만 써도 같은 뜻이예요.
