square는 사각형, 평방미터 말고도 뜻이 여러가지가 있지요. 예
를 들어서 'I will be square with you. (난 당신에게 솔직하게 말씀
드리겠습니다.)' 라는 말이 되고 square person 이라고 하면 '고리타
분한 사람'을 뜻하는 말입니다. 그런데 square 라고 하는 말은 편평한
이라는 뜻도 있지요. 예를 들어서 square own's debt 라고 하면 '빚을
편평하게 하다, 즉 빚을 청산하다, 빚을 갚다' 라는 뜻이 되지요. 그
래서 square meal 하는 표현은 1800년대 말부터 쓰이기 시작한 표현으
로서 '영양가를 골고루 섭취한 풍부한 식사'라는 뜻이 됩니다. 그래서
하루의 세 끼를 three meals 라고 이야기를 하지요. 그런데 영양가가
풍족한 세 끼를 가리킬 때에는 three squares라고 합니다. 왜 square
라는 말에 영양가가 풍부한 이라는 말이 되었느냐면 음식을 크게 네가
지의 부류로 나눌수가 있거든요. 먼저 milk group (우유 제품), meal
group (육류 제품), the vegetable and fruit group (야채, 과일제품)
그리고 bread and cereal group (빵과 곡류 제품) 으로 나뉩니다. 그
런데 이 square meal이라고 하는 것은 네 부류를 꼭지점으로 모든면이
평형을 유지하는 정사각형과 같은 식단이라는, 즉 영양소가 골고루 들
어있는 음식을 말합니다. 그래서 생겨난 말이 바로 square meal 입니
다. 충분한 식사, 영양가가 풍부한 식사라는 말입니다.
Asked when they feel satisfied with their life, most people say they feel so when they think they are superior to others.
That's true.
Many feelings of satisfaction or dissatisfaction have their roots in how we compare ourselves to others.
If we spend most of our time thinking only about those who have more, it's no wonder that we feel unhappy.
When we are surrounded by only those who have less, we feel grateful.
Even though we have exactly the same life either way, our feeling about our life can vary tremendously based on who we compare ourselves with.
언제 인생에 만족을 느끼느냐는 질문에 대부분의 사람들은 남들보다 자신이 우월하다고 느낄 때가 그렇다고 답변한다.
이는 맞는 말이다.
만족과 불만족이라는 많은 감정들은 남과 어떻게 비교하느냐에 그 바탕을 두고 있다.
대부분의 시간을 오로지 자신보다 풍족한 사람들에 관해서만 생각하면서 보낸다면 자신이 불행하다고 느껴지는 것은 당연한 일이다.
주변에 온통 나보다 덜 가진 사람만 있을 때 감사함을 느낀다.
어느 쪽이든 우리는 동일한 인생을 살고 있지만, 인생에 대한 우리의 감정은 비교대상이 누구냐에 따라 크게 다르다.
