도요타 생산 시스템(Toyota Procuction System: TPS)에서 비롯된 것으로
현장의 작업자가 품질 등의 문제 발생시에 라인을 정지시킬 수 있는 권한을 갖는것.
다시말해, 스위치 하나만 누르면 전체 라인이 정지하게 되어 현장에서 철저한 품질 관리를 할 수 있도록 하는 방식을 말한다.
만약 현장 작업자가 부품 불량을 발견하여 전체 라인이 정지 되었을 경우 해당 협력업체에서 라인이 정지된 시간만큼 배상을 해야 하기 때문에 협력업체에서도 품질관리에 보다 많은 신경을 쓰게 된다.
