One mid-July day I visited Inner Mongolia.
There were endless fields of wild flowers.
Of 1,000 species of wild flowers, 500 herbs are used to make Chinese medicines.
About 80% of all Chinese herbal medicines are from this area.
We stayed in a Mongolian tent.
The grassland around the tent was a sea of forget-me-nots, though different from the ones I know in Korea.
Their leaves and stems seem lean and weak, yet are as hard as wires.
This is to protect them from the long, dry, cold, and windy winter, and to help them to survive through to the spring.
The blue flower is like the 'dew of the stars.'
7월 중순 어느 날 나는 내몽고에 갔었다.
야생화로 가득한 끝없는 평원이 펼쳐져 있었다.
1천 종의 야생화 중 5백 종의 약초는 한약을 만드는데 사용된다.
중국 한약의 80%가 이 지역에서 나오는 것들로 만들어진다.
우리일행은 몽고식 텐트에서 머물렀다.
텐트 주변의 초원은 비록 그 종류는 내가 한국에서 알고 있는 그것들과는 달랐지만 물망초로 바다를 이루고 있었다.
그 물망초들의 잎과 줄기는 기울어지고 연약해 보였지만, 철사만큼이나 단단해 보였다.
이것은 건조하고 추운 바람이 부는 긴 겨울날씨로부터 자신들을 보호해주고 봄까지 생존할 수 있도록 해준다.
물망초의 파란 꽃은 ‘별의 이슬'과 같다.
Elephants living in the jungle or on the plains sometimes sense danger.
At the first hint of danger, elephants will raise their trunks to smell any threat.
When an enemy is about to attack, the trunk may be used to warn the rest of the herd.
This is done by sending a loud trumpet-like sound, which makes the earth shake.
This warns the other elephants in the herd of possible danger.
The trunk plays a vital part in its life.
In fact, it is almost impossible for an elephant to survive if its trunk becomes damaged.
정글이나 평원에 사는 코끼리는 위험을 감지해 낼 수 있다.
위험을 처음 느끼면 코끼리는 코를 들어올려 위험의 근원이 어디인지 냄새를 맡아 찾아낸다.
적이 공격할 때는 땅이 흔들릴 정도로 큰 트럼펫소리를 내어 무리에게 위험을 경고한다.
이러한 행동은 자신의 무리 뿐 아니라 다른 무리에 있는 코끼리에게도 위험 가능성을 알려준다.
이처럼 코끼리 코는 삶에 있어 중요한 역할을 한다.
사실 코를 다치면 코끼리의 생존은 불가능하다.

Tools and hand bones excavated from the Swartkrans cave complex in South
Africa suggest that a close relative of early humans known as
Australopithecus robustus may have made and used primitive tools long
before the species became extinct 1 million years ago. It may even have
made and used primitive tools long before humanity's direct ancestor,
Homo habilis, or "handy man," began doing so. Homo habilis and its
successor, Homo eretus, coexisted with Australopithecus robustus on
plains of South Africa for more than a million years.

Before the 1500's, the western plains of North America were dominated by
farmers. One group, the Mandans, lived in the upper Missouri River
country, primarily in present-day North Dakota. They had large villages
of houses built close together. The tight arrangement enabled the
Mandans to protect themselves more easily from the attacks of others who
might seek to obtain some of the food these highly capable farmers
stored from one year to the next.

Barbed wire, first patented in the United States in 1867, played an
important part in the development of American farming, as it enabled the
settlers to make effective fencing to enclose their land and keep cattle
away from their crops. This had a considerable effect on cattle
ranching, since the herds no longer had unrestricted use of the plains
for grazing, and the fencing led to conflict between the farmers and the
cattle ranchers.
