왜 우울한 얼굴을 하고 있지?

미국회사에 근무하는 L양이 하루는 출근하자마자 상사한테
꾸지람을 듣고 우울한 얼굴을 하고 앉아있는데, 뒤늦게
출근한 옆자리 미국인 동료가 Why the long face?라고 했다.
L양은 더욱 화가 났다. 왜냐하면 그녀는 얼굴이 좀길어서
평소 컴플렉스를 가지고 있었기 때문이다.
그러나 미국인이 한말은 "너 왜 얼굴이 기냐?"는 뜻이 아니라
"왜 그렇게 우울한 표정이냐?는 뜻이었다.
기분이 나쁘면 입이 밑으로 쳐져 얼굴이 평소보다 좀길어보이기
때문에 이런 표현이 나온 것이다.
그러니까 미국인의 말뜻은 Why are you in a gloomy mood?였다.
같은 뜻으로 쓰이는 다른 말은 Why so blue?
Why the knitted brow?(찡그린 이마) 또는 Why in a funk?
또는 Why so depressed?등 많다.

F32 우울증 에피소드(Depressive episode)

전형적인 경도, 중등도, 중증 우울증 에피소드에서 환자는 기분의 저하, 정력 감퇴, 활동력 감소를
받게 된다. 흥미, 즐거움이 감소하고 집중장애와 최소한의 노력에도 심한 피로감을 느낀다. 잠을
잘 자지 못하며 식욕이 없고 자부심이나 자신감이 결여되고 죄책감이나 가치없음도 느낄 수 있다.
기분저하의 정도는 매일마다 다르며 환경에 좌우되지 않고 흥미나 즐거운 감정의 소실, 평소보다
몇 시간 먼저 일어나기 등의 소위 "신체적" 증상과 동반된다. 우울증은 아침에 더 심하고 뚜렷한
정신 운동성 지둔, 동요, 식욕소실, 체중감소, 성욕감퇴와 동반될 수 있다. 위와같은 증상의 심도와
수에 따라 우울증의 에피소드는 경도, 중등도, 중증으로 나뉜다.

위의 증상중 4개 이상이 보통 존재하고 환자는 보통의 생활을 계속하는데 어려움을 격을 가능성이
있다.
F32.2 정신병적 증상이 없는 중증의 우울성 에피소드(Severe depressive episode without psychotic
symptoms)
환자는 위의 몇 몇 증상중에서 우울증의 에피소드가 뚜렷하며 의기소침, 특히 특히 자부심의 소실이
나 죄책감을 느낀다. 자살충동이나 행위가 일반적이며 많은 "신체적" 증상이 동반된다.

psychotic symptoms)
정신병성 증상이 없는 주요 우울증단일에피소드(Major depression single episode without

F32.2와 같은 우울증의 에피소드. 현재 일상 사회생활이 불가능한 정도의 환각, 망상, 혼미, 정신운동
성 지둔을 동반한다. 자살, 탈수, 기아로 생명이 위험할 수 있다. 이러한 환각이나 망상은 기분과
일치할 수도 아닐 수도 있다.
