직역을 하면 couch 라는 것은 우리 말로 하면 소파 정도로 이해하시면
되겠습니다. potato는 감자지요. 그러니까 소파 감자라고 하겠지요.
그런데 이것이 텔레비전만 보는 게으름뱅이라는 뜻이거든요. couch 는
소파보다 등이 약간 낮고 눕기에도 편안한 그런 가구입니다.
그리고 미국 사람들이 텔레비전을 보면서 즐겨 먹는 간식 중의 하나가
바로 감자칩입니다. 그러면 편안한 couch에 앉아서 텔레비전을 보면서
감자칩을 먹고 있는 사람이 상상이 되십니까? 바로 이런 광경에서
couch potato라는 말이 생긴 것 입니다. 이 표현은 통상 게으른
사람을 가리키지만 특히 텔레비전에 빠져서 빈둥거리는 사람을 두고
하는 말입니다. couch potato와 비슷한 표현으로 sofa's food라는 것이
있지요. 두 가지 모두 격식을 차려야 하는 장소에서는 어울리지 않는

놓았습니다.' 그런 말이 되겠지요. 여기에서 let own's hair down
이란 말은 여성들이 공적인 장소에서 반드시 머리를 땋아 올리고 가는 것이
습관으로 정착되었던 그 시대로 거슬러 올라가면 조금 이해가 되실 것 입니다.
그 당시의 여성은 외출해서 집에 돌아오면 머리에 핀을 뽑아서 머리카락을
늘어뜨리고 공식적인 장소에서의 긴장을 풀어서 편안한 기분이 되었지요.
그래서 let own's hair down 이란 말을 직역하면
'머리카락을 풀어 밑으로 내려오게 하다' 라는 말인데
지금까지의 긴장을 풀고 심리적으로 편안한 기분이 되어서 모든 것을
다 털어놓는 편안한 심정이 되다.. 그런 의미가 됩니다. 이 표현을 주
로 여자들에게 많이 썼던 표현인데 요즘은 남자들에게도 많이 씁니다.
