Palm Computing struck a blow against rival Microsoft Corp. in the
battle to control the operating systems on hand-held computing devices

licensed the Palm OS for use in a new line of products.

support Sony's Memory Stick technology. Sony is struggling to make
Memory Stick, a new storage and data exchange device that's about
one-sixth the size of a floppy disk, a de facto standard in consumer
devices.

Analysts called the partnership a watershed for the PDA pioneer. Those
who predicted Palm Computing's market share would dwindle in the face of
competition from Microsoft's Windows CE, a scaled-down version of the
Windows operating system designed for use in consumer electronics, have
since changed their tune.

eight percentage points higher than Microsoft's 45.1 percent.

That scenario no longer looks likely, said Ken Delaney, vice president
of mobile computing for the Gartner Group in San Jose. Certainly
Microsoft will gain market share but Palm has ``solidified its OS'' as
the software of choice in a wide array of products from some of the
industry's most powerful brands.
