humankind는 인류의 숭고한 면만을 강조한 humanity와 달리 인류의 바람직하지 않은 특성에 관해서 언급할 때도 쓰인다. men은 사람의 총칭을 나타내는 man과는 달리 과학논문 등 학술용어로는 쓰이지 않는다. mankind 등이 인간을 하나의 단일체로 파악하고 있다면, men은 인간을 여러 인간의 집합체로 파악하고 있어 다음과 같은 문맥에서 편리하게 쓰일 수 있다.

take는 가장 일반적이고도 가장 색채가 없는 말로, 본래의 뜻대로 쓰이는 경우에는 손을 잡는 것을 가리킬 뿐이다.

비유적으로, 형체가 없는 것에 쓰여, 어려운 작업이란 뜻을 내포하는 ‘소유하다, 지배하다’를 의미한다.
take a city
이 두 극단적인 의미를 갖고 있는 take는 어떤 방법으로나 무엇을 잡는 것을 의미한다.

seize는 갑자기 세게 잡거나 쥐는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 이런 뜻을 강조하는 경우에는 take 대신에 쓰일 수 있다.

확대된 용법에서 잡은 것이나 잡는 것이 형체가 없는 것인 경우에는 이 말은 보통 급히 지나가는 것, 포착하기 어려운 것을 뜻한다.

비유적으로는 많은 사람 혹은 모든 사람의 정신력이 미치지 못하는 사물을 완전히 이해하는 능력을 암시한다.
grasp an idea
clutch는 흔히 무서움, 조바심에서 단단히 잡는 것, 잡고 싶은 것이나, 쥐고 싶은 것을 단단히 또는 발작적으로 grasp하는 것을 의미한다. 특히 자동사로 쓰이는 경우에는 grasp보다 잡는 데 성공하는 뜻이 덜 들어있고, 성공하는 뜻이 들어 있는 경우에만 꽉 쥐고 있는 뜻을 암시한다.
The child clutched his mother's hand./ She clutched his hand in terror./ I clutched desperately at the twigs as I fell.
snatch는 돌연히 재빠르게 또는 남 모르게 슬쩍 seize하는 것을 의미한다. 이것은 비교하는 말 중에서 가장 갑작스러운 동작을 암시하지만, 가장 가까운 동의어인 seize처럼 폭력을 사용하는 뜻은 암시하지 않는다.

grab는 snatch보다 무례하고 난폭한 뜻이 더 강하고, seize만큼 폭력을 사용하는 뜻을 품고 있다. 위의 말 중에서 가장 천한 것, 남의 권리에 대해서 무관심한 것, 또는 자기가 원하는 것을 공공연하게 염치없이 집는 것을 보통 뜻한다.

생산자물가지수
Producer Price Index: 생산자물가지수
국내시장의 제1차 거래단계에서 기업 상호간에 거래되는 commodities(상품)의
평균적인 price change(가격변동)를 측정하기 위해 작성되는 지수.
옛 이름인 'wholesale price index(도매물가지수)'에서의 'wholesale(도매)'의
의미는 wholesaler(도매상) 또는 대리점에서의 판매를 의미하는 것이 아니라
대량거래가 이루어지는 생산자 단계의 판매를 의미한다는 뜻이다.
따라서 지수작성에 사용되는 가격은 제1차 거래단계의 가격, 즉 domestic
products(국내생산품)의 경우는 value-added tax(부가가치세)를 제외한
producer sale price(생산자판매가격, 공장도가격)를 원칙으로 하고 있다.
반면에 수입품의 경우는 importer sale price(수입업자 판매가격)를 원칙으로
하고, 이것이 불가능할 경우에는 다음 거래 단계인 대량도매상 또는
중간도매상의 판매가격을 이용한다. 그 대상범위가 광범위해 일반적인
national economy(국민경제) 물가수준의 변동을 측정할 수 있고 이에 따른
commodities의 전반적인 수급동향을 파악할 수 있기 때문에 보통
general objective index(일반목적지수)라고 한다.

에 기사 중에 줄거리를 파악할 수 있는 내용이 나오지 않는다면 제목의 번
역이 아주 곤혹스럽다. 당시에도 (여보 애를 날려버렸어요)라고 번역하
는 웃지 못할 실수를 저지를 뻔했는데 blow up에 (폭파시키다)는 뜻 외에
도 (풍선 등을부풀리다), (사진을 확대시키다)라는 의미도 있음을 몰랐던 데
서 비롯된 에피소드였다. (지방[脂肪]을 다룬 12월 7일자 뉴스위크 커버 스
토리 기사 중에도 (식사량이 늘어나다)는 뜻으로 blow up을 사용한 문장이
있었다.

뜻입니다. 여기서 주의깊게 볼 건 into라는 전치삽니다.
원래 앞에서 오는 사람한테 갈 수 있는 지점은 바로 그
앞까지겠지요. 그런데 충돌을 한다면 그 선을 넘어가는 것이지요.
그래서 into를 씁니다.
다음 두 문장을 비교해보시면 차이를 아실 수 있습니다.
Hey, are you driving towards my house?
너 지금 내집을 향해서 운전하고 있는거야?
Nope. I'm driving INTO your house.
아니지비. 내 집을 차로 부셔버릴 작정이야.
Oncoming은 앞에서 온다는 뜻입니다. 눈에 보이는 것이 올 때도
oncoming으로 추상적인 것이 다가온다고 할 때도 oncoming이지요.
I'm not ready for the oncoming shockwave of societal
transformation.
난 다가올 사회 변화에 준비가 안된 것 같애.
3. Broke into a run: Break는 단절을 기본 의미로 하는
동사입니다.
깨진다는 것도 원형을 보존하던 물건이 원형에서 단절되는 것을
의미하지요.
또, 어떤 동작을 취하고 있다 갑자기 그 동작과 단절하고 다른
동작을 취할 때도 break를 씁니다. 단절을 뜻하니까. 여기서의
용법이지요.
He broke into a smile when he heard it.
그 말을 듣고 갑자기 미소를 지었다.
그냥 smile과 다른 점은 무표정해 있다가 "갑자기" 미소를
띄었다는 것이지요.
동사를 공부할 때는 먼저 "기본 의미"를 파악하세요.
Break의 기본 의미는 "깨다, 부수다"가 아닙니다. "원형에서
끊어지는 것, 단절"이 기본 의미지요. 기본 의미에서 출발하면
사전에 나와 있는 그 수많은 뜻이 그냥 이해가 되지요. 변성기가
된 걸 영어로 뭐라고 할까요?
His voice broke.
이게 왜 변성기일까요? "원래" 목소리가 원형에서 벗어나서
(단절되서) "전혀 다른" 목소리가 됐기 때문입니다.
4. Today would not have been complete without so many people
on the street: 미국인들이 흔히 쓰는 문장 구조입니다. 엎친데
덮친 격, 오늘같은 날 하필이면 …에 해당하는 표현입니다.
Today would not have been complete without a construction in
the middle of the road!
오늘같은 날 꼭 도로 중간에서 공사를 해야되는 거야?
5. The crowds added to the absurdity of it all: 하필이면
무엇무엇하다에 해당하는 또 다른 표현입니다.
Add to는 정도를 더한다고 할 때 쓰는 말입니다.
His father's death added to his misery.
아버지가 돌아가셔 그는 더욱 불행해졌다.
6. Disgustingly hot and humid: 우리들이 영작을 할 때 가장
어려움을 많이 느끼는 것 중 하나가 형용사와 부사지요.
"더럽게(끔찍하게) 춥다, 덥다" 등에서 어려운 건 춥다와 덥다가
아니라 강조 부사 또는 형용사니까요. 부사 및 형용사는 많이
읽고, 듣고 봐서 쌓아두는 것 밖에 왕도가 없습니다.
영어로 된 신문이나 책을 읽으면서 눈으로만 읽지말고 한번쯤 더
새겨보면 큰 도움이 됩니다.
Disgustingly라는 단어는 알아도 이런 상황에서 강조 부사로 쓸
수 있다는 걸 모르면 헛일이니까요.
7. Never-ending line of people: Never-ending story라는 영화도
있었지요. 끝없이 늘어져 있는 줄을 말합니다.
수식어구를 만드는 방법은 여러가지가 있지만 이처럼 하이픈을
사용하는 것도 유용합니다. Never-ending 같은 수식어는 이미
거의 굳어져 버린 표현이지만, 자신만의 수식어가 필요할 때는
어떻게 할까요? 다음 문장을 영어로 옮긴다면 …
"넌 뭐야 짜샤"라고 말하는 눈으로 날 쳐다 보더라니까.
He gave me a "who-the-hell-are-you" look.
다른 말로 하자면 다음과 같이 됩니다.
He looked at me as if to say "who the hell are you."
Teens model themselves after the movie stars.
십대들은 인기가수를 따라하려고 하지
연예인의 행동거지가 자주 문제가 되는것은 특히 청소년들이
흉내내고 따라하기 때문이죠.
이렇게 누군가를 본받다, 따라하다, 흉내내다에 해당하는 단어는
model입니다.
이게 동사가 되면 모방하다,..의 형을 따라 만들다. 본뜨다 란
뜻으로 쓰입니다.
Model oneself after(on) someone은 누군가를 본받다란 말입니다.
Teens look at our movie stars and they model themselves after them.
십대들은 인기 영화배우들을 자기 모델로 삼고 따라한다.
He tried to model himself after his father.
자기 아버지를 본받으려 노력했다.

이런 기사 하나 쯤 잘 새겨두면 순위 매기는 표현은 어디가도
꿀리지 않겠지요?
순위 이동하는 걸 "미끄러졌다(slide), 움직였다(move), 굴러
떨어졌다 (topple), 추락했다(fall)"로 표현하고 있습니다.
얼마나 순위가 움직였는 지도 잘 보세요. 언뜻 뜻을 모를만한게
SPOT과 RUNG 일 겁니다. SPOT은 "위치 또는 자리"를 뜻하고,
RUNG은 사다리의 가로 막대를 말합니다. 그래서 단계를 뜻하지요.
이걸 모른다고 의미 파악이 안될리가 없습니다. 다른 문장에서
이미 SPOT과 RUNG은 "PLACE"의 뜻이라는 게 나타나 있으니까요.
다시 말해, 모르는 표현이 나와도 전후 문맥으로 얼마든지 추정이
가능하다는 걸 보여주는 겁니다.
간단한 예를 몇개만 살펴봤지만 반복을 싫어하는 영어의 특징을
장점으로 활용할 수 있는 계기가 됐으면 좋겠네요.
[경제영어 이해하기] Savings account
Short accounts make long friends 라는 말을 들어 보셨는지요?
account는 무엇보다도 먼저 은행 계좌를 떠올리기가 쉬우므로
short accounts라 하면 "짧은 계좌?"라고 의아해 하실지도
모르겠습니다만 account의 기본적인 뜻은 "계산," "셈"이므로 이
속담은 계산이 빨라야 친구와의 관계가 오래간다는 말입니다.
다시 말해 친한 사람일수록 금전 관계 등은 깨끗이 해 둘 필요가
있다는 것을 암시하고 있는 말입니다.
account와 관련된 표현은 상업의 역사가 엄청나게 오래 된 만큼
매우 다양하게 사용되고 있습니다만 account가 응용된 표현은
우선 제쳐 두고 계좌라는 의미에서의 account를 살펴보기로
하겠습니다.
미국에서와 같이 개인 수표 발급이 자리를 잡은 곳에서는 은행
구좌를 열 때 savings account와 checking account라는 두 가지
계좌를 개설하여 한쪽에는 돈을 넣어 두고 다른 한 쪽은 수표
발급시 (when drawing checks) 돈이 인출되는 용도로 사용하게끔
하고 있어 우리에게는 약간 익숙하지 않은 면이 있습니다.
그러나 보통 savings account라 하면 미국에서나 우리나라에서나
마찬가지로 돈을 넣어 두는 계좌라는 의미에서는 별다른 차이가
없습니다. 최근의 저축 규모의 증가와 관련된 기사를 한 번
보기로 하겠습니다.

예금하는 것을 deposit이라 하므로 예금자는 depositor라고
한다는 것은 기본적으로 알아 두시기 바랍니다.
위 예문에서는 문맥상 별로 어려운 표현이 있는 것은 아니나
이러한 부문에서 자주 등장할 만한 것들을 몇 가지 짚고 넘어갈
필요가 있습니다.
예컨대
interest rates hike-up (금리 상승)
domestic banks (국내 은행)
exceed ~ (~을 넘다)
for the first time this month (이 달 들어 처음으로)
high-yield (고수익, high-yielding이라 하면 "고수익의," 또는
"고수익을 내는")
banking sector (일반적으로 제1금융권을 지칭)
non-banking sector (일반적으로 은행권을 제외한 제2금융권을
생각하면 무리없음)
attract more deposits (attract 대신 draw를 써도 무방)
opt for ~ (~을 선호하다. prefer A to B를 사용한다면 이
문장에서는 opt for를 prefer로 대체 가능)
와 같은 표현들은 잘 기억해 두시기 바랍니다.
참고로 예문에서와 같이 bank official이라 해서 번역할 때 "은행
관리"라는 어색한 표현 대신 자연스런 우리말로 "은행
관계자"라고 하는 것이 좋습니다. 사소한 것 같더라도 막상
사용하거나 들어 보면 금방 어색한 것을 느낄 수 있으므로 이러한
것에도 주의를 기울이시기 바랍니다.
예금에 따른 수익은 보통 이자(interest)로 대표되는데 이러한
이자 등의 수익을 yield라고 하므로 저축 상품에서 발생하는
소득은 yield on savings deposit라고 합니다.
요즘과 같이 금리 변동(interest rate fluctuation)이 심한
때에는 금융기관 (financial institutions)들이 시장 금리와
연동되어 움직이는 저축상품을 많이 내놓게 되는 것이 일반적인
현상입니다. 이와 같이 "~에 연동되어 움직이다"는 영어로는
"move in combination with ~"라 하면 되는데 다음 문장에서
사용된 표현과 한 번 비교해 보시기 바랍니다.

않았습니다만 그와 같은 의미로서 bear fluctuation이라는 말을
썼습니다.
bear는 "~을 품다," "~을 담다"라는 의미이므로 여기서는 reflect
또는 represent (반영하다)와 같은 의미로서 사용되어
금융시장에서의 금리 변동 (interest rates fluctuations)를
반영하는 상품이라는 의미를 충분히 살려 주는 표현이 됩니다.
예문에서의 new products for savings는 new savings accounts라
바꾸어도 같은 뜻이 됩니다. 번역할 때 항상 염두에 두셔야 할
부분은 우리말로 자연스럽게 나올 수 있도록 어느 정도의
융통성을 가질 필요가 있다는 것입니다. savings account라 해서
반드시 저축계좌라고 번역하지 마시고 전후 문맥을 파악하여 저축
상품이라고 옮기는 것이 좋습니다.
account가 응용되는 표현은 상당히 많습니다. "계좌"라고 단순히
암기만 하지 마시고 이번 기회에 사전을 펴고 여러 가지 응용
표현을 몇 가지라도 공부해 두실 필요가 있습니다.
