When the Civil War ended in 1866, the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution adopted in 1868 and 1870 granted citizenship and suffrage to blacks but not to women.
1866년 남북전쟁이 끝나고 1868년과 1870년에 채택된 미국 헌법 제 14차 및 15차 수정조항은 시민권과 투표권을 흑인들에게 부여하고 여성들에게는 부여하지 않았다.
Women did not have the right to vote until 1920, but woman suffrage did not,
as many men predicted, merely double the total number of votes cast
on each side of a question, with the women voting the same as their husbands.
Instead, women began to study the issues and candidates and make up
their own minds.
