들여다보는 사람을 'clock watcher'라고 한다.

은 시간외 근무(overtime work)를 시키는 일이 흔치 않으며, 만일 시간외 근
무를 시킬 경우는 근로기준법에 따라 철저히 보상한다. 미국인들은 보통 오
전8시에 출근하고 점심시간을 한시간 가지며, 오후5시에 정확히 퇴근한다.

저자가 미국에 온 지 얼마 되지 않았을 때 어느 미국회사에
근무하는 친구한테 아침에 전화를 걸었더니 미국인이 전화를 받

Punched in 이란 말을 그때 처음 들었던 나는 그 미국인들의
말을 알아듣지 못하고 I beg your pardon ? (아이 베규어 파아든
)즉 『뭐라고 하셨지요 ?』라고 되물었다. 그러자 그는 이번엔 H

그제서야 나는 punch on이 report for work와 같이 「출근하
다」는 뜻이고, 그 미국인 맨 처음 한말은 「그는 아직 출근하지
않았다」는 뜻임을 알게 되었다.
punch in은 time clock(타임 클록-출근 기록계)에 카드를 찍
고 출근하다는 말이다. 그러므로 타임 클록이 없는 직장에 출근
하므로, 그런 경우는 report for work라고 하는 것이 좋을 것이
다. 『당신은 몇시에 출근합니까 ?』라고 묻는 말을 영어로 해
보면 What time do you report for work ?(왓 타임 두 유 리포오
트 포 워억)또는 What time do you punch in ?(왓 타임 두유 판
취 인)이 된다.
What time do you start your day ?(왓 타임 두유 스타앗 유
어 데이)는 『몇시에 일과를 시작합니까 ?』란 말인데, 역시 『

반대로 「퇴근한다」는 것은 punch out(판취 아웃)또는 go
home(고오 호옴)이라 하면 된다. call it a day(코올 이 더 데이
)도 「하루 일을 끝낸다」는 뜻으로 쓰이는 말이다.
