Korea Telecom, LG Vying for Satellite Broadcasting License
한국통신과 LG, 위성 방송 사업자 선정 경쟁 벌여

With the competition for IMT-2000 (International Mobile
Telecommunication) licensing concluded, all eyes are now on who
will win the license for satellite broadcasting which will be
decided tomorrow.
IMT-2000 (차세대 이동통신)사업자 선정 경쟁이 끝나자 모든 관심은
이제 내일 결정될 예정인 위성 방송 사업자에 어느 업체가 선정될
것인지에 몰려 있다.

At the center of the focus is LG, which is leading one of the two
consortiums for a single license since it lost the IMT-2000 license
to Korea Telecom by a slim margin.
단독 사업자 선정을 위한 두 컨소시엄 가운데 하나를 이끌고 있는 LG가
IMT-2000 사업자 선정에서 근소한 차이로 한국통신에 패했기 때문에
모든 관심의 초점은 LG에 집중되어 있다.

However, industry analysts are quick to point out that giving the
license to the state-run telecommunications giant could create a
major dispute with LG.
그러나 기업 분석가들은 한국통신이 이번 사업자로 선정하게 되면 LG와
심각한 분쟁이 일어날 것이라고 재빠르게 지적하고 있다.

``For LG, losing the satellite broadcasting license would be
devastating since it has failed to secure the asynchronous license
for IMT-2000. The whole foundation for its information and
communication business, which LG has identified as its core
competence of the future, would be dismantled as a result,'' the
industry analyst said.
"LG 입장에서는 이미 IMT-2000의 비동기식 사업자 선정에서 탈락했기
때문에 이번 위성 방송 사업자 선정에서까지 패하게 되면 거의 치명적일
것이다. 결과적으로 LG가 미래 핵심 사업으로 인식해온 정보 통신
업계의 전체적인 기반이 와해될 것이다."라고 기업 분석가는 말했다.

On one hand, LG does have the consensus and ``sympathy'' on its
side since people will cry foul if Korea Telecom once again wins
the satellite broadcasting license, although the case would be
similar for SK Telecom if KSB wins.
한편으로 만일 이번 위성 방송 사업자에 한국통신이 또다시 선정되면
너무 부당하다는 주장이 일 것이기 때문에 LG는 여론과 "동정표"를 갖고
있는 셈이다. 그러나 만일 KSB가 선정되면 SK텔레콤도 비슷한 경우가
될 것이다.
