구두나 서면으로 ‘알리다’의 뜻에서 tell은 일반적인 말이며, inform(알리다, 통지하다)은 약간 격식을 차리는 딱딱한 말로, 한 사실이나 사정에 관한 지식을 어느 사람한테 직접 전하는 것을 강조한다.

관청계에서 inform이라고 하면, 정보, 지식의 일편을 주는 것뿐만 아니라, 그런 것을 알려 주었다는 것을 정보, 지식을 받는 이에게 통고하는 것까지도 말한다.

Handicap (불리한 조건) : 중세 영국에서는 가치가 같지 않은 물건을
교환할 때 'hand in cap (모자에 손넣기)'이란 게임을 하는 풍습이
있었다.
당사자 두 사람은 먼저 심판을 담당할 사람을 찾는다. 심판은 찾았으면

17세기에는 'hand in cap'의 규칙이 경마에도 사용하게 되어 레이스를
공평하게 하기 위해 어느 말에 어느 정도의 중량을 추가로 싣게 해야
하는지를 이 방법으로 결정했다. 결국 핸디캡 (handicap)으로 중어든
이 말은 어떤 사람에게 불리하게 작용하는 것을 의미하게 되었다.
