Everybody wants to be in Professor Frazier's class.
Many of the students sign up for his classes because of his widespread reputation.
He treats all students fairly, and they can always count on his help and encouragement.
Small group discussions take place in his class.
He recommends that every student in his class talk to one another in groups.
All the discussions have a definite relationship to students' interests.
Even the issues that cause argument - race, politics, morality - are brought
because he considers it useful to meet difficult topics openly and honestly.

In American classrooms, the participation of students is not only accepted but also expected in most subjects.
Some teachers base students' grades on how eagerly they take part in the classes.
Courses are often organized around classroom discussions, student questions, and informal lectures.
In some courses, the American teachers are only advisors and the students do the actual teaching through discussions and presentations.
It is common for teachers to guide students to take responsibility for their learning.
And students who do not ask questions and do not give their own ideas may appear to be uninterested in the courses.

When my grandmother began to have problems in seeing, hearing and walking, a number of family meetings were held.
We discussed what we should do for her.
We talked of placing her in a nursing home, but that idea was quickly given up.
Although my grandmother would be with more people of her own age, she would see even less of her family, and that would break her heart.
Mother would not allow her own mother to grow old and weak in a strange place.
She said, “I will not let Grandmother end up in a nursing home,”
and I admire my mother greatly for this decision.
It was not an easy decision for her.
When so many others are running away from the problem of what they should do about their old parents, my mother stands out remarkably.

A twelfth-century couple, Heloise and Abelard, is often mentioned when romantic love becomes the subject of scholarly discussion.
When they met, Heloise was the niece of a wealthy scholar.
Abelard was the most famous teacher in France.
Older and vastly more educated, Abelard became the girl's tutor.
The two fell in love.
When Heloise bore a son, they married in secret.
The couple did not want Abelard's career to be hurt by scandal.
However, when Heloise's uncle found out what happened, he forced the girl to become a nun.

Like the moral issues surrounding suicide, the problem of euthanasia has long been in the center of thinkers' discussion.
People who favors to end the life of a terminally ill patient insist physicians only prolong the suffering of the patient.
They mean, even though he or she is facing death, the patient can choose to end his or her life to escape the unbearable pain.
But those who oppose it say there is no moral distinction between killing someone and allowing someone to die.
They regard both of them as ‘murder'.

It would be best if the "viewing" could be done here in Seoul. This
would permit us to assemble a representative group of inter-

As a consultant, I was supposed to spend an hour or more with the
department heads discussing their thoughts. Nevertheless, appointments
were forgotten; long waits (fifteen to forty-five minutes) in outer
offices were common, and the length of the discussions was often cut down
to ten or fifteen minutes. I was usually kept at an impersonal distance
during the discussion; they did not move from behind the desk.

This letter is to confirm that you will be dismissed form the company
effective October 14. 1992. This action follows our letters of warning
dated July 21 and August 17, 1992, concerning you carelessness in

detailed in the letters mentioned and in our recent discussions. To these
may be added your recent offensive and insulting behavior in the

In the context of consumerism, liberty is not an abstract right to participate in public discourse or free speech.
It means expressing oneself and realizing personal pleasure in and through goods.

A deliberative poll involves three stages.
First, a national probability sample is selected and questioned in detail about the participants' attitudes towards a particular issue.
The second stage is the interview event.
The participants take part both in focus group discussions and in expert plenary sessions, during which key specialists representing diverse standpoints answer questions framed by the participants.
Finally, at the end of the deliberations, all participants once again complete the questionnaire so that the direction, volume, and distribution of changes in attitudes can be measured.
A result excerpted from a deliberative poll is given below:

I would like to focus your attention not on the subject of the article but on the kind of conclusion they reached, namely that there is no technical solution to the problem.
An implicit and almost universal assumption of discussions published in professional scientific journals is that the problem under discussion has a technical solution.
A technical solution may be defined as one that requires a change only in the techniques of the natural science, demanding little or nothing in the way of change in human values or ideas of morality.

The antidote to the blind application of genetic engineering is to start talking about what should and should not be allowed, who will pay and what standards ought to apply to scientists, engineers and businessmen.
The proper response to genetic engineering is not legislation to stop the mad scientists but a public debate that will teach us how best to control ourselves.

One of the difficulties inherent in discussing freedom of speech is that it contains what libertarians often describe as the paradox of freedom.
The classical exposition of this paradox was described by John Stuart Mill in his essay On Liberty in Utilitarianism Etc:(London, 1910) p 83
"...there ought to exist the fullest liberty of professing and discussing, as a matter of ethical conviction, any doctrine, however immoral it might be considered."

In other words, unless we ensure to the enemies of freedom the liberties which they are keen to abuse, then we deny the essence of what we ultimately stand for and are therefore no better thant those to whom we are opposed.
Or as Voltaire has been paraphrased, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
On a more practical plane, freedom of speech serves many functions.
One of its most important functions is that decision-making at all levels is preceded by discussion and consideration of a representative range of views.

This “cyber terrorism” is not only designed to slander and defame opponents, but also attacks their characters and threatens their properties and even family members.
Needless to say, such brutal and irresponsible behavior gravely endangers the democratic process of the nation and the culture of open discussion, even leading to the coining of a new phrase, “Internet power.”

Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling.
Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the
shower or on the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes
both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole
universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a
revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a
child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain
predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance
conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is
known of other religions.

This is a new show and there are new rules.
One: "Is this information we need in the voting booth?"
Two: "Is this the best possible form of the argument?"

She's claiming to be a prophet.

But if so, I think it deserves a follow-up.
We're not going to get the debate if we're mocking their candidates.
The whole point of the new debate format
is to compel the candidates to tell the truth
and make them responsible for their own rhetoric
by asking tougher questions than a Match.com profile.

For a few weeks, we're not gonna ask the country to eat its vegetables.
Why? Because there's a debate we want to do
that trumps all of your Sarah Lawrence ethical conundrums.
It shouldn't be too hard to understand.
So get it the fuck together.
He happens to be right.
"War on drugs a failure."
I know how it feels.

What's so special about this debate?
If we get what we want, no one will ever go back.
We'll have changed the debates forever.
And your concern is that if your ratings are low, you'll lose leverage?
- Yes. - Is that your concern or Will's concern?
Will's concerns are my concerns.

- Sloan. - How's her mood in there?
It's not good, but let me ask you something.
For the sake of a story,
how would you feel about me going on the Internet and saying vicious things
about you that might get an argument started about misogyny?
- What kind of vicious things? - I don't know.
- What would the general area be? - I really don't know.
- Something about the way you look? - Like what?
- I'd be making it up. - What would you be making up?

Jamie Dimon at Chase says,
"Voting against raising the debt ceiling would be a moral disaster."
The Barclays guys say, "This debate is detached from reality."
My Goldman source says, "If the House Republicans continue this debate,

Hey, we can be doing mock debate prep during this.
Hey, debate prep.
You don't have to watch this.
We don't know for sure what happened here.

I have to go onto a message board and disrupt the conversation
to the extent that havoc ensues.
Then I can go on the troll website and brag about it.
But you don't want to do something or say something
- that would hurt someone you don't know. - Right.
You want to say things that would hurt me.
Yes.

What website?
You've heard of EconomyBrain.com?
Yes, it's a financial news aggregate blog and discussion forum
that attracts an intelligent level of debate.
And the commenters have a very high opinion of your analyses.
So you'd like my permission to--
Jump in there and invent heinous and incendiary lies about you,
end the intelligent debate, and start a whole new one
about, say, whether or not you're a whore.

- Can I talk to you a sec? - Yeah.
Just the fact that they're debating
- whether or not to raise the debt ceiling-- - I'm trying.
I need to find a Casey Anthony guest no one else has.
And hopefully I won't be able to do it.

I find it absolutely disgusting that the liberal media--
- Fine. - No, that would be his answer.
I know. Are these guys gonna be ready for tomorrow?
- Absolutely. - We blow the mock debate,
we've been doing Casey Anthony and Anthony Weiner for nothing.
They understand.

The debate is the only reason we're scared of the numbers.
- Right. - The only reason.
Right.
그래

We got ambushed by the trial at the worst possible time.
There's a new debate format we want to show to reps from the RNC tomorrow.
And if we can't keep the ratings going up, it's not gonna matter.
We've been working on this for months and it's important.
And it's a good thing for everybody.
We can debate whether the ends justify the means--

But a popular discussion at the moment
is a recent article projecting US credit rating fallout
as a result of the debt ceiling standoff.
Yes, I heard that on the news. No, wait, I didn't.
I heard about Casey Anthony instead.
Well, that's where I jumped in.
I said if I can balance my checkbook,
why can't the government balance its budget?
Mary, Mother of God, am I sick of that insane analogy.
Balancing your checkbook is to balancing the budget
as driving to the supermarket is to landing on the moon!

So we're glad to see your numbers rebounded from last week.
We hadn't been covering Casey Anthony and half our audience went to HLN.
But we started covering it and things stabilized.
Well, good, because we were about ready to offer a debate to Nancy Grace.

Adam, how many hours did you and I spend
talking about how flawed the debates were?
Especially the primary debates?
A lot of hours.
Well, now you and I are in a position to do something about that.
Follow me.
The questions have to be tougher.
They have to be able to square their campaign rhetoric with facts.
They have to be stopped when they're not answering the question.
And they have to be called out when their answers contradict the facts.
Guys, get in place.

Our job is to find the two candidates
who'll give the voters the best competing arguments,
and I don't believe we're seeing that.
We have to put the candidates on a witness stand.
- Would you have them swear an oath? - Just let 'em do it.

Beginning with you, Congresswoman Bachmann.
