Copernicus reasoned that the earth revolved around the sun. Copernicus

The earth is the sole planet in the solar system that has appreciable
amounts of oxygen gas in its atmosphere.

Though smaller than our solar system, a quasar, which looks like an
ordinary star, emits more light than an entire galaxy.

Unlike hummingbirds, sunbirds tend to perch on the flower they are
probing rather than to hover around it.

Neptune is about thirty times as far from the Sun as is the Earth.

The outermost part of the Sun's atmosphere is so hot that its gases
continually expand away from the Sun.

If protected from damage, solar cells work well and operate for a very long
time.

break a looking-glass: 불행을 자초하다

It seems as if (or as though) it had been just a few days ago that~. It seems only a few days ago that~ 현재의 사실에 대해서「마치 ~인 것처럼」이라고 할 때는 as if (or as though) 뒤에 오는 동사는 가정법과거가 쓰이지만, 여기서처럼 과거의 일을 말할 때는 가정법과거완료형으로 한다.
He talks as if he knew everything.
My aunt loves me as if I were her own son.
He looked as if nothing had happened.
He looks as if he were ill./ He looked as if he were ill.
→ 「불타는 태양 아래서」under a (or the) scorching (or burning) sun. 달도 마찬가지로, a full moon(만월), a half moon(반달) 등.
→ 「아침, 저녁으로 쌀쌀하다」feel chilly in the morning and evening; have cool(er) mornings and evening.
(ANS) It seems as if it had been just a few days ago that we were enjoying swimming under a scorching sun, but it is already a little chilly in the morning and evening.

The beauty of it all is when the sun comes shining through to make the rainbow in
my mind.

How would you like you eggs?
Soft boiled, please.
Hard boiled, please.
Sunny-side up, please.
Over easy, please.
A scrambled egg, please.

How have you been getting through the dog days?

* 부활절(Easter)의 유래

The children are looking at a globe to find where they live.
They look to see where the sun is in the sky.

Ben said the sun moves up and down in the sky. When it comes
up we have daytime. When it goes down we have nighttime.

왜 the tropic of Cancer 라고 부르는지요?
지도면상 위도 23˚27´에 나타나는 북회귀선을 the tropic of Cancer라
고 부르고 남회귀선을 the tropic of Capricorn 이라 하죠.
회귀선 사이에 열대지역을 the torrid zone 또는 the tropics 라고 합니

the tropic of Cancer
남회귀선을 the tropic of Capricorn 이라고 부르는 것도 남회귀선상에

I don't know anything about solar.

Every time the sun comes up and goes down, we call it a day.

The meridian is the time when the sun is at its highest.

This comes after a new report warns of global warming could melt North Pole ice by the year 2100,
driving species such as polar bears to extinction.

One of our hopes of solving the energy crisis lies in making direct use of radiant energy from the sun.

We learned that an eclipse of the sun may occur in a limited area on the earth when moon passes between the earth and the sun.

All living things, both plants and animals, must feed on other plants or animals.
This process is called a food cycle and green plants are the beginning of this cycle.
Every green plant makes food from the sun's energy and many animals depend directly upon them for food.
These plant eaters are often small animals.
At the next stage in the food cycle are the animals that eat the plant eaters.

Now my little kitten has turned into a beautiful cat.
Her fur is white, which makes the ears on top of her head look a little pink.
Her eyes are big and yellow.
When she's wide awake and in trouble, they can look as bright as the sun.
Her nose is pink, and under this is her mouth.
She has a sly smile on it.
On each side of his mouth are whiskers.
They are long and seem to dance in the sunlight.

Almost everyone has heard of Halley's comet, but most people did not know what comets are.
They think they are bright objects that move quickly across the sky and then disappear,
or that they would be dangerous if they crashed into the Earth.
In fact, you cannot see most of them moving, and although they belong to the solar system,
they are different from planets because they are not solid.
One of them is Halley's Comet, which is unique.
It appears every 76 years.

Nothing in the history of science can compare with a black hole.
Thought to exist far, far out if space, black holes are said to be small sphere-shaped areas where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape.
This, of course, makes them invisible and is the reason they are referred to as “black.”
They're called “holes” because, as far as we know, they seem to be bottomless pits which can suck in everything from tiny dust particles to stars many times larger than our sun, all of which disappear without a trace.

People living along the coasts are familar with the rise and fall of the ocean's surface.
Tides result from the pull of the moon's and the sun's gravity on the earth.
Although the moon is much smaller than the sun, it is much closer to the earth.
It is the moon that has the greatest effect on the tides.
The sun also influences the tides.
However, it is so far away that it has less than half the pull of the moon.
The combined pull of the moon and the sun determines the height of the tides.

The arctic tern is an extraordinary bird that makes difficult journeys.
It flies up to 35,000 kilometers every year―all around the world from the North Pole to the South Pole and back again!
That's more than any other animal.
Arctic terns fly through all types of weather, using the sun and stars to help them.
They spend almost all of their life in the air.
When they need food, they catch fish from the sea.
Some arctic terns live thirty years or more―so they travel over one million kilometers in their lifetime.
The bird is only thirty-eight centimeters long and weighs around 300 grams.

In the last fifteen years, one hundred thousand elephants have been killed by illegal hunters in this valley.
Here, elephants usually run at the first sight or smell of man.
I want to always remember the deep wrinkles in the skin above the elephant's eyelashes, his wet and shining eyes, which now reflect the sunrise.
Surely this will never happen to me again; the memory must last a lifetime.
And I must never forget the way I feel, for at this moment I can see everything so clearly.

Far into the forest stood a little pine tree.
Since it had plenty of fresh air and sunshine, it grew well.
When Christmas came, many young trees were cut.
“Where are they going?” the pine tree asked.
“They are going to the town,” twittered the sparrows.
“There they are dressed in gold and silver and placed in the middle of warm rooms and the children worship them.”
“How I wish that would happen to me!” sighed the tree.
“My sweet, you already have real blessings!” said the sun, but the tree did not understand.
The pine tree was restless and impatient and always wanted to get away.

Dr. Ward, a famous paleontologist specializing in mass extinction, says:
“We have finally said out loud what we have thought for so long.
Life, at least complex life, is rare in the universe.”
His colleague Dr. Brownlee comments:
“People say the sun is a typical star, but that's not true.
Almost all other environments in the universe are terrible for life.
It's only in the Garden-of-Eden like Earth that it can exist.”

Landscaping is a natural and beautiful way to keep your home more comfortable and reduce your energy bills.
Well-placed trees can deliver effective shade and reduce overall energy bills.
It is said that just three trees, properly placed around the house, can save an average household between $100 and $250 in cooling energy costs annually.
During the summer months, the most effective way to keep your home cool is to prevent the heat from building up in the first place.
A primary source of heat buildup is sunlight absorbed by your home's roof, walls, and windows.
Landscaping can also help block and absorb the sun's energy by providing shade.

The whole day was a blaze of sunshine.
The ghostly winter silence had given way to the great spring murmur of awakening life.
This murmur arose from all the land, filled with the joy of living.
It came from the things that lived and moved again, things which had not moved during the long months of frost.
The willows were bursting out in young buds.
Shrubs and vines were putting on fresh clothes of green.
Woodpeckers were booming and knocking in the forest.
Squirrels were chattering and birds were singing.

An eclipse used to be a losing proposition: entire populations, surprised by the sudden darkness, would lose their cool; pregnant women feared that they would lose their babies; court astrologers who had failed to predict the celestial occurrence would lose their heads.
And then scientists discovered that an angry sky god wasn't erasing the sun: eclipse could be forecast.

The markets of the world are flowing with goods and services produced by the interplay of sun and earth, air and water, and the inexhaustible imagination and energy of man.
Wherever you touch an object made or conveyed by man, you are touched by all the people who have reached their hands to make this possible for you.
Daily use is daily communion.

Plants are necessary for life on earth.
In the process of photosynthesis, roots, stems, and leaves of green plants work together to make sugar from sunlight.
During the process of photosynthesis, plants use sunlight, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide (CO2), and water to make food.
In this way, green plants use the sun's energy to make food for the plant and other living things.

The living organisms, such as animals, get their energy by eating the plants.
Human beings eat both animals and plants to get energy.
Without green plants, the sun's energy could not be used on the earth, and all other organisms living on the earth would die.

Archaeologists use radioactive carbon to discover the age of ancient plants.
C-14 comes from the sun and is found in all living things.
Archaeologists can calculate the age of plants that lived in the past because radioisotopes decay at the same time rate.
The rate of decay is called the half-life.
The half-life is the time necessary for half of the atoms to decay.
Radioactive carbon (C-14) has a half-life of 5,730 years.
That means that after 5,730 years, half of the radiocarbon atoms remain; one half of the radioactive atoms are still in the sample.
After 11,460 years, one-fourth of the atoms are still in the sample.
Archaeologists can measure the number of radioactive atoms and discover the age of ancient plant material.

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
"Will they go on doing that for ever?"
"That's one possibility.
But there is another.
You may recall that Alberto told Sophie about the two forces that cause the planets to remain in constant orbit round the sun?"
"Weren't they gravity and inertia?
"Right, and the same thing applies to the galaxies.
Because even though the universe continues to expand, the force of gravity is working the other way.
And one day, in a couple of billion years, gravity will perhaps cause the heavenly bodies to be packed together again as the force of the huge explosion begins to weaken.
Then we would get a reverse explosion, a so-called implosion.
But the distances are so great that it will happen like a movie that is run in slow motion.
You might compare it with what happens when you release the air from a balloon."
"Will all the galaxies be drawn together in a tight nucleus again?"
"Yes, you've got it.
But what will happen then?"
"There would be another Big Bang and the universe would start expanding again.
Because the same natural laws are in operation.
And so new stars and galaxies will form."

In his innocence, man held his own special planet to be the center of the starry
universe until Copernicus, 431 years ago, dared to challenge this dogma. The earth
moves around the sun, he said, not vice versa. It was a profound and troubling idea.
Yet it was still far from the whole truth, for it kept the sun at the center of things.
And that misconception persisted in the minds of most until the coming of
photography and the large telescopes of the 20th century.

There is nothing on the earth but is affected by the sun.

Tips on Caring For Rugs
For people looking for more information on how to conserve rugs and other textiles or wanting to have an expert appraisal performed, the Textile Museum's curators offer several suggestions.
For an appraisal, people can call the American Society of Appraisers at 1-800-272-8258 or write the group at P.O. Box 17265, Washington, D.C.20041.
Meanwhile, the following advice will help keep rugs in good shape:
* Vacuum the underside of your rugs at least twice a year. Dirt migrates to the bottom of the knots.
* Rotate the rugs if possible. Rugs kept in one position attract insects and could fade in one spot from the sun.
* If you have a rug with chemical dyes, it probably will fade. Use window treatments and screens or shades to keep out the sun's rays.
* Do not moth proof. It can be problematic for the dyes. Good housekeeping is better.
* Take care of damage early. Damage to edges and fringes can be easily repaired if caught early. If worn areas are allowed to expand, repair can be costly.

The earth moves round the sun.

Every summer people like to enjoy the sun. Many make a point of getting
to the beach to get a tan. And every summer many return home suffering
from a sunburn. Not too long ago tanning was fashionable and even
promoted by doctors as a healthful activity. But today there is evidence
that regular exposure to the ultraviolet rays of sunlight, especially if
it results in burns, can be harmful to health.

It was said that the Chinese used their cats as clocks in the days before
the invention of the watch. The pupils of the cat's eyes were believed to
gradually change shape with the position of the sun in the sky. At midday
they were a narrow line and they gradually became rounder until sunset.

Out in the backyard I am taking advantage of this beautiful morning.
And I think nowhere have I seen skies as blue as those of my village.
Looking upward, I can see skies splashed with cotton white clouds. The
sun brightens the eastern side of the trees and casts their shadows to
the west. A soft breeze gently rustles the tall clover blossom, not
disturbing the bees gathering nectar from them. A white butterfly
flutters across the yard. Everything seems to be in harmony with one
another.

In a meeting of animal Space Scientists, the chimpanzee proudly
announced, "We sent a rocket to the moon. It stayed there for a whole

the fox. " We already sent our spaceship to straight to the sun." The
chimpanzee and the fox laughed loudly and said, "Don't be silly. The

"We're sending it up at night."

<<<<< PART-TIME LOVER >>>>>
Sung By Stevie Wonder

You control my brain
And you should know that
You are life in my vein
*** repeat
I can't believe it
You're a dream coming true
I can't believe how
I have fallen for you
And I was not looking
Was content to remain
And it's erotic to be back in the game

-

Seven Daffodils
by The Brothers Four
Oh, seven golden daffodils
All shining in the sun
To light our way to evening when our day is done
And I will give toy music and a crust of bread
A pillow of piney boughs to rest your head
A pillow od pinet boughs to rest your head

-- by Debbie Gibson
Tonight with words unspoken.
You'll say that I'm the only one.
But will my heart be broken when the night meets

This is understood as electromagnetic wave, and is being widely used in modern communication system because of its speed.
This is well known for its contradicting characteristics of wave and particle.
It originates at the outer surface of the sun, in a region called the photosphere, where atoms, atomic ions, and electrons jostle about at 5800℃.
Since these charged particles accelerate as they bounce around, they emit electromagnetic waves.

Hawking, who holds a prestigious Cambridge University chair once held by Sir Isaac Newton, also forecast that babies would be grown outside the womb in the next hundred years.
The British physicist said humans should improve their mental and physical capabilities and meet challenges posed by space travel.
"If we don't destroy ourselves in the next 100 years, I expect we will spread out to planets in the nearby solar system and then to nearby stars," Hawking said.

The author of the best-selling "A Brief History of Time" is in Bombay to attend "Strings 2001," a conference on the string theory, also called the "Theory of Everything."
(A Brief History of Time)”의 저자이기도 한 호킹은 “만물의 이론(Theory of Everything)” 이라 불리는 “Strings 2001” 학회에 참석하기 위해 Bombay에 와 있다.
He and others believe that once proved, it may be the answer to conflicting theories on the origin and fate of the universe.
Hawking said life on other solar systems would be either more primitive or more advanced than on Earth.
"If life is already developing in other solar systems, there is little chance of catching it at the stage at which humans are now," Hawking said.
"As we explore galaxies, we might find primitive life but not beings like us."

October 8, 1997: September 1997 marked the tenth anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the stratospheric Ozone Layer.
The ozone layer serves as Earth‘s shield from the Sun's longer wave-length UV radiation, or ultraviolet-B.
Ultraviolet-B is known to depress crop and forest growth, is a probable cause of skin cancer in humans, and is believed to affect the health and even the viability of a wide range of organisms and ecosystems.

The atmosphere around us is made up of gases.
Some of these gases function like the panes of a greenhouse:
they let some radiation from the sun in but also retain heat in the atmosphere, that is:
they don't let all radiation back out.
As a result of this natural effect, it is warmer on Earth than it would be without these heat-trapping gases.
Human contributions of certain gases to the atmosphere have increased this greenhouse effect.

Pope speculates instead that soot from the worldwide conflagrations, sulfate aerosols and other impact phenomena were to blame.
His findings prompted such headlines as ALVAREZ TEAM WAS WRONG and DUST DIDN'T DO IT, and heartened the relatively few scientists who still contest the Alvarez theory.
그의 발견은 ALVAREZ TEAM WAS WRONG와
Others, however, dispute Pope's analysis and say his methodology was faulty.
While acknowledging other contributory factors, they still believe dust was the major component of the sun-blocking shroud that dispatched the dinosaurs.

Though M87 is the first supermassive black hole ever discovered, astronomers are convinced that such objects lie at the heart of many galaxies.
The powerful forces unleashed as the holes gobble up stars and gas may be the source of quasars, mysterious beacons of light so bright that they're visible across the universe.
There are even hints of a giant black hole in our own Milky Way.
But the sun is too far away to be in any danger of falling in.
The only “black holes” we have to fear are the metaphorical ones here on Earth.

The value of the world's electrical power generated from renewable sources such as wind and solar is about $7 billion - up from less than $1 billion a decade ago, but still a tiny fraction of the total electricity market, according to a study by green-technology consultants Clean Edge, of Oakland, Calif.
That study projects the renewable market to reach $82 billion by 2010, as technological advances lower the price and make renewables easier to use.
And governments around the world are pushing power producers to reduce emissions that contribute to air pollution and global warming.
Joel Makower, co-founder of Clean Edge, calls this moment “a unique historical opportunity” for companies that produce renewable energy.

As the global market for renewable energy expands, however, it is European and Japanese companies - not American ones - that are winning most of the new business.
As recently as 1996, manufacturers in the U.S. accounted for more than 40% of the world's photovoltaic shipments.
But two years ago, Japan emerged as the world's leading manufacturer of these solar devices.
The 214 giant wind turbines going to King Mountain in Texas at an estimated cost of $250 million come from Bonus, based in Brande, Denmark.
