Two thirds of all missions to Mars have failed.
One reason there have been so many failures is that there have been so many attempts.
We have been trying to go to Mars for 40 years.
Another reason is that getting to Mars is hard.
To get there, spirit and Opportunity, the two Mars Exploration Rovers had to fly through
about 483 million kilometers of deep space and target a very precise spot to land.
The space environment isn't friendly.
If getting to Mars is hard, landing there is even harder.

Many people have been thinking of the possibility of sending human beings to Mars.
But we aren't really at that point yet.
Why? The first reason is safety.
Different nations have sent more than thirty probes toward Mars, but only one-third of them have survived the trip.
The second reason is cost.
It costs about a million dollars per kilogram to deliver robots to Mars.
It would take at least fifty billion dollars to get a person to Mars.
The last reason is the cosmic radiation that astronauts would absorb during the mission.
Much of this radiation is blocked on Earth by the Earth’s magnetic field.
Mars has no magnetic field.

Although researchers have taken samples of deep-ocean rocks and
sediments for over a century, the first detailed global investigation of
the ocean bottom did not actually start until 1968, with the beginning
of the National Science Foundation's Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP).
Using techniques first developed for the offshore oil and gas industry,
the DSDP's drill ship, the Glomar Challenger, was able to maintain a
steady position on the ocean's surface and drill in very deep waters,
extracting samples of sediments and rock from the ocean floor.
