For one week, these children knew they would get a “prize” at the end of the week for their drawing behavior.
For the remaining children, no such promises were made.
There was a significant change in the crayon use among the kids promised external rewards.
Surprisingly, they spent much less time playing with crayons than before.
By contrast, the other children maintained their normal frequency and duration of use.
