It was just my luck to marry a woman like her.

Cold shoulder.

In contrast, 먹어 is a very informal form of speech used only with close friends and children.
대조적으로, "먹어"는 친한 친구와 아이들에게만 사용되는 반말(a very informal form of speech)입니다.

Although foreigners use the respectful form 요 after 먹어, it is still impolite simply because 먹어 is an expression for friends and children.

Q2:Koreans rarely call each other by their first name except for close friends and children.

T : Whose seat is that? It's been empty for many days.
S : You're right. It's Tae-su's seat. He has been absent for three days.
T : What's wrong with him? Is he sick?
S : No. I think he ran away from home with his friends. His parents are looking for him anxiously now.
T : Is that true? Tae-su doesn't seem like someone who would run away from home.

Many people might think that they choose friends on the basis of personal characteristics such as intelligence, personality, interest, or even physical appearance.
But a study of a housing complex for married students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests that physical distance can be a decisive factor.
Researchers asked couples to list their friends in the complex.
They found that residents were far more likely to list the couple in the next apartment than the one that lived two doors away.
A distance of thirty feet made the difference between friends and strangers!

The global information market will be huge and will combine all the various ways human goods, services, and ideas are exchanged.
On a practical level, this will give you broader choices about most things, including how you earn and invest, what you buy and how much you pay for it, who your friends are and how you spend your time with them, and where and how securely you and your family live.
Your workplace and your idea of what it means to be "educated" will be transformed, perhaps almost beyond recognition.
Your sense of identity, of who you are and where you belong, may open up considerably.
In short, just about everything will be done differently.
I can hardly wait for this tomorrow, and I'm doing what I can to help make it happen.

Eva felt very sorry for her next-door neighbor, Elaine.
The two women had been living next to each other for years and had become close friends.
Years ago, when Eva lost her husband, Elaine was there to console her and bolster her spirits.
Eva had never forgotten the emotional support of her friend, and she strongly believed that one good turn deserves another.
Now Elaine was quite ill, so Eva made a point of spending the days with her friend, tending to her needs and helping to nurse her back to health.
It was not just because she felt that Elaine's kindness should be repaid with another favor.
Eva was genuinely concerned about her friend and wanted to help her out.

A few years ago, an office pal and I decided to clean up our speech.
We put a "cussing cup" on the desk, and for every cuss word that slipped out, the offending party had to deposit one quarter.

America's "Marxophobia" must be the single greatest obstacle to its efforts to
promote democracy around the world. Washington's reluctance to give aid to
Nicaragua will probably send that country right into the arms of the Soviets.
America must stop getting jittery at the mere mention of socialism. It should also cast
a wary eye on some of the governments it does back, such as Argentina and Chile.
Dictatorships cannot be the friends and allies of a country that professes the highest
regard for democracy and human rights. The United States must be understanding
toward democratic experiments like that in Nicaragua.

When my friend and I went for a swim at a beach near the mouth of the
Zambezi River in Mojambique, I asked a young boy, who was fishing nearby,
whether there were sharks in the water. "No," he answered.
My friend and I jumped into the water and started swimming.
After several minutes, I called out to the boy, "Are you sure there
are no sharks here?"
"No sharks," he replied. "Sharks are afraid of crocodiles."

Why? THe answer is simple : With an inexpensive digital camera, it's
easy to take pictures, transfer them to a PC, and e-mail them to friends
and family members.

Have you met Jane's boyfriend yet?

A terrible accident changed my life. A friend and I were driving home
from a midnight movie. As we approached an intersection, we stopped at a
red light. No cars seemed to be coming, so I decided to go through the
red light. Immediately after we started, I lost consciousness. Later I
learned that we had hit a car coming from the other direction. That
accident made my friend spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair, and I
learned a costly lesson.

[ Is it possible to break a glass by singing or shouting? ]
Issacs : If you think a human voice is not powerful enough, you should
explain this. While I was arguing with a friend one afternoon, our voices
rose higher and higher, and suddenly a glass on the table broke into
pieces.
Collins : Working in the music business, I have seen glasses fall off
speakers and break. But I've never seen someone break a glass with just
his or her voice.
Freeman : I happened to do this when I was singing the title song from
the film Annie. When I hit the highest note, a large wine glass suddenly
broke.
Freeman: Annie

Have you and your friend ever been to a museum together, looked at the
same painting, and had different reactions to it? If the painting you
looked at was a seascape, you may have liked it because the dark colors
and enormous waves reminded you of the wonderful memories you had in your
hometown. In contrast, your friend might have had a negative reaction and
said that the same things brought fear to his mind as he remembered
sailing on a rough sea during a violent storm.

< Radio Romance > Sung By 티파니
From who? Just from the one who loves you baby
I see you baby every single day holding onto my best
friend
But you don't see me
So I make the same request now every single night
Going out from me to you on the dedication line(?)
My secret admiration I won't reveal
I wouldn't want to hurt no one by telling how I feel(?)

The DJ knows my voice now
He even knows my choice now
He never says my name
He just says from the one who loves you baby
One night you'll hear a song
And then you'll know just who is from

But you don't see me

One of the reasons is that the subjects of Korean movies are not easily accessible for international audiences.
For example, successful movies such as Swiri, JSA, and Friends deal with uniquely Korean themes.
Korean films still adhere to the view that "what is more Korean is more globally marketable."
However, to further penetrate the international market, a universal appeal should be achieved by portraying issues through global sensibilities.

They also spend less time at work and more time with friends and family.

Yesterday, my friend and I took Ben shopping with us, so he

attention from other shoppers. *To top it all off, when I
made a purchase, he would throw up his arms and *scream.
"Run, Visa Card! Run!"
▲ disaster: a sudden or great misfortune: 재난, 참사

Savings account
Short accounts make long friends
Boosted by interest rates hike-up, savings deposits at
domestic banks exceeded 170 trillion won for the first time
this month, the Bank of Korea said yesterday. People sought
short-term, high-yield deposit instruments, as financial
institutions in the banking and the non-banking sectors as
well competitively pushed up interest rates to attract more
deposits. "Most depositors opted for short-term deposits
with three- to six-month maturities," said a bank official.
interest rates hike-up (금리 상승)
domestic banks (국내 은행)
exceed ~ (~을 넘다)
for the first time this month
banking sector (일반적으로 제1금융권을 지칭)
attract more deposits (attract 대신 draw를 써도 무방)
opt for ~ (~을 선호하다. prefer A to B를 사용한다면 이
소득은 yield on savings deposit라고 합니다.
"move in combination with ~"라 하면 되는데 다음 문장에서
Banks have recently developed new products for savings
bearing fluctuations in money market interest rates that are
approaching 20 percent.
예문에서의 new products for savings는 new savings accounts라
