The blue flower is like the 'dew of the stars.'
7월 중순 어느 날 나는 내몽고에 갔었다.
야생화로 가득한 끝없는 평원이 펼쳐져 있었다.
1천 종의 야생화 중 5백 종의 약초는 한약을 만드는데 사용된다.
중국 한약의 80%가 이 지역에서 나오는 것들로 만들어진다.
우리일행은 몽고식 텐트에서 머물렀다.
텐트 주변의 초원은 비록 그 종류는 내가 한국에서 알고 있는 그것들과는 달랐지만 물망초로 바다를 이루고 있었다.
그 물망초들의 잎과 줄기는 기울어지고 연약해 보였지만, 철사만큼이나 단단해 보였다.
이것은 건조하고 추운 바람이 부는 긴 겨울날씨로부터 자신들을 보호해주고 봄까지 생존할 수 있도록 해준다.
물망초의 파란 꽃은 ‘별의 이슬'과 같다.

The baby boom continued through the decade of the 1950's, producing a
population increase of nearly fifteen percent in the five years from
1951 to 1956. This rate of increase had been exceeded only once before
in Canada's history, in the decade before 1911, when the prairies were
being settled. Undoubtedly, the good economic conditions of the 1950's
supported a growth in the population, but the expansion also derived
from a trend toward earlier marriages and an increase in the average
size of families. In 1957 the Canadian birth rate stood at 28 per
thousand, one of the highest in the world.
