이것은 미국의 여론조사 기관인 Ac Neilson 사에 의해 개발된 TV시청률
조사수단이다. 과학적인 표본 추출방식에 의해 뽑힌 일정수의 가구의 TV
수상기에다 people meter를 갖다 장치하면 중앙의 main computer에 그 가
구들의 수상기 작동방식이나 채널변환등이 초단위로 자동기록이 되면서
그 기록을 통해서 시청률 통계를 내게 되는 것. people meter의 특징은
가족구성원이가지고 있는 개별적인 버튼을 통해서 시청자의 성별, 연령
별, 직업별 집계가 가능하다는 것이다. 선진국에서는 이미 20여년전부터
이 people meter 를 통해서 시청률조사를 실시해 왔는데 우리나라에서는
1991년 12월부터 이방법을 이용한 시청률조사가 이루어지고 있다. 이 밖
에도 시청률조사에는 전화인터뷰나 일기식 조사방식, 낱낱이 사람에게 찾
아가는 방법 또 passive meter 이런 방법이 있다. 이에 반해서 라디오 청
취률조사는 이 people meter를 이용한 방법은 동원되지 않고 있고 라디오
청취률조사는 조사기관에 따라 조금씩 차이가 있는 반면에 people meter
를 사용하는 TV시청률은 비교적 정확하고 공정하게 그 시청률을 조사할
수 있는 특징을 가지고 있다.
