When crucial problems appear, philosophies often disappear. To a man in
a sinking boat, theory is meaningless. Either he knows how to swim or he
drowns. In the midst of classroom crises, all the books in all the
libraries are of no help. All the lectures and all the courses are of
little value.
중대한 문제가 발생했을 때 철학적인 가르침은 대개 소용이 없게 된다.

While the practical contributions of probability theory are undisputed, few
theories have created such a philosophical controversy. We shall not belabor the
issues here except to note that the basic point of difference lies in the view
regarding the meaning-and, therefore, the use one is willing to make-of
probability measures. But these matters are primarily philosophical rather than
mathematical. The mathematical foundations of the theory are not really at
issue. Here our task is to construct a practical definition of the work
"probability."
