business는 제조업자·농업자 같은 생산자의 활동과 대조되는, 상인·은행가·재정가 따위의 활동을 가리킨다. 그러나 넓은 뜻에서는, 상인·은행가만이 아니고, 생산자·상품의 운송업자의 활동도 포함된다. 그들의 궁극 목적이 상품을 공급하는 데에 있고 자기의 부를 증가하는 데에 있기 때문이다.

commerce와 trade는 상품의 교환, 특히 대규모의 거래와 상품의 운송이 포함되는 교환에 종사하는 사람의 활동에 적용된다. 일반적으로는 나라와 나라 사이, 주와 주 사이에서, 수송이 해로에 의해서 행해지며 거래가 상품만 아니라 금전·어음의 교환으로도 행해지는 경우에는 commerce가 많이 쓰이고, 같은 나라 안의 서로 다른 기업체 사이에서 행해지는 상품의 거래에는 trade가 많이 쓰인다.
