Trimble Navigation, based in Sunnyvale, shows how the loss of defense
contracts can be a blessing in disguise for Silicon Valley. The company
learned the hard way not to depend on the military.
서니베일의 트림블 내비게이션사(Trimble Navigation Ltd.)는 방산부문의
어려움 때문에 오히려 전화위복의 기회를 얻은 기업이다. Until 1990, the
company consciously focused on the commercial market for its navigation
instruments and systems, keeping its military business to a mere fifth
of overall sales.
90년까지만 해도 이 회사는 주로 상업용 내비게이션 계측기와 시스템 판매에
주력해 군수부문이 총 사업의 5분의 1에 불과했었다.
But when the Persian Gulf War broke out in 1991, the company won an
exclusive contract to produce hand-held receivers for the military.
그러나 91년 걸프전이 이 회사는 터지자 이 회사는 군사용 소형무전기의 독
점생산권을 따냈다.
What followed was nothing short of ``cultural shock,'' explained Charlie
Arminger, vice president of sales. When he arrived in 1989, the company
had $19 million in sales. By 1991, at the height of Desert Storm, the
company's sales had increased more than sevenfold, to $150 million.
뒤이어 벌어진 현상은 말 그대로 '문화적 충격'이었다고 이 회사의 영업담당
부사장인 찰리 아밍거(Charlie Arminger)는 회고한다. 그가 트림블사에 올
당시인 89년만 해도 천구백만 달러에 불과하던 매출이 91년 '사막의 폭풍'
작전이 한참 절정에 달한 91년에는 7배가 늘어난 1억5천만 달러에 달했다.
When the war ended, the government refused to accept any more shipments
of the receivers, even though Trimble had reorganized its production
line around them. ``For us, it was as though the war lasted for a
nanosecond,'' Arminger said. ``We were suddenly left with a ton of
inventory sitting around. We went into a funk.''
그러나 전쟁이 끝나고 정부의 구매가 끝나자 어려움이 닥쳤다. 아망거는 ``전
쟁이 아주 짧은 시간만 지속된 것처럼 느껴졌다''면서 ``엄청난 재고만
남게되고 우리는 깊은 불황의 그늘로 접어들었다''고 밝혔다.
Trimble was forced to slash jobs, and sales plunged. The company has
since recovered, but only because it moved aggressively into commercial
production. It has since doubled the amount of its sales to $300
million, and only about 10 percent of its business remains tied to
military contracts.
트림블사는 대폭적인 인원감축을 단행했고 매출은 급강하했다. 그후 이
회사는 회복세를 보이고 있는데 이것은 순수 민간 부문을 개척한 결과였다.
매출이 배 이상 늘어나 3억달러에 달했고 지금은 방산분야가 차지하는 비율이
10%에 불과하다.
오컬트(the occult)라고도 하는 초자연 현상을 뜻하는 말로 점성술(astrology), 연금술(alchemy), 마술(magic) 등으로 연구되어, 미신(superstition)뿐만 아니라 신학이나 종교와도 관계가 있다. 그 뒤 천문학(astronomy)으로 발전하였으나 19세기 후에야 오컬트적 요소를 갖춘 심령술(spiritualism)이 연구되기 시작했다. 20세기에 초심리학(parapsychology)으로 본격연구가 이뤄져 심리현상의 존재가 인정되었다. 연금술은 아라비아어에서 유래된 것으로 비금속을 금으로 바꾸는 현자의 돌(philosopher’s stone)과 불로장수 약의 연구를 주로 하였다. 한편 점성술은 별이나 달의 위치가 인간의 운명을 결정한다는 생각으로 사람의 운명을 점쳤다. 오늘날 영미신문에도 점성란과 점성용 천구도(horoscope)가 실리며, 이는 출생했을 때 별의 위치나 그 관계가 사람의 운명을 지배한다는 생각에서 비롯된 것이다.
