Benjamin Franklin once worked as a printer.
From his work, he realized how difficult it was to make books.
However, he really enjoyed reading and wanted to get as many books as he could.
Franklin came up with a good idea - to set up a club where people could share their books.
At last, fifty members joined the club in 1732.
The club members were allowed to take the books home with them.
This club, called Franklin's Club, is said to be America's first circulating library.

She opened it, then slammed it shut, and stormed back in the house.
A little later she came out of the house and again went to the mail box and again opened it, then slammed it shut again.
Then, she went back into the house.
Puzzled by her actions, the man asked her, "Is something wrong?"
To which she replied, "There certainly is! My stupid computer keeps giving me a message saying, "YOU'VE GOT MAIL!"

Many Americans enjoy saving time.
For this reason, home-shopping is a big business these days, and it's getting bigger.
In most cities, you can watch TV channels that advertise 24 hours a day.
The products they advertise can be ordered by calling a toll-free "800" telephone number and using a credit card.
The products are then sent directly to the customers home.

When he was nine years old, he was brought to the door by a policeman who kept one hand on his arm as if to stop him from running away.
He had been caught writing with a crayon on a wall of the subway station and his parents were expected to discipline him.
The entire rest of the day he stayed in his room waiting for his father to come home from the shirt factory.
A slap in the face, he thought, perhaps that's all he'll get.
And maybe no pocket money for the coming week.

Linda was walking home from work one day last month, when she saw a man who was trying to break into a car.
She asked him what he was doing.
Then he said to her, "Get lost!"
She ran to a nearby shop and asked the owner to call the police, which he did immediately.
When she went outside again, she saw that both the thief and the car had gone.
About ten minutes later, a police car came.
Linda gave a description of the thief.
She said that he looked about twenty-five years old.
A few days later she found out that the thief had been caught and that the car had been returned to its owner, undamaged.
Linda was glad to be able to help.
Linda

One day before people knew about coffee, a young goatherd noticed that his herd did not come home the previous night.
So he set out to look for them.
After searching around, this young goatherd finally found his herd.
Though he was relieved to find them, he was still concerned for their health,
for a normally calm and boring herd of goats was now dancing and jumping.
On further investigation he found that goats were consuming red berries growing on nearby plants.
Feeling rather tired, he tried the berries and found them to be quite bitter, yet strangely good.
Soon he did the same thing.

My job requires me to bring work home.
I need a work area where I can concentrate.
When I try to work, my wife is always there with a steady stream of questions or small talk.
When I sit down to read, I read only for a few minutes because she interrupts me.
Even when she isn't in the room, I can hear her talking, yelling or complaining in a tone that can't be ignored.
I suppose I should feel grateful that she wants to talk to me.
But the truth is, I need my peace and quiet.
I have tried to discuss this with her, but it only upsets her.

The Celtic New Year was November 1.
The night before was considered a special night when ghosts and witches roamed the earth.
Ghosts and witches are still associated with Halloween.
On the night before the Celtic New Year, people went from house to house begging for food.
They wore masks so that the spirits returning from the dead would not recognize them.
Today children still wear masks and trick-or-treat from door to door on Halloween.
The Celts also carried lanterns to frighten away the spirits.
They carved the lanterns from vegetables like potatoes.
Now pumpkins hold lighted candles on Halloween.

As I walked home one freezing day, I stumbled on a wallet someone had lost in the street.
I picked it up and looked inside to find some identification so I could call the owner.
But the wallet contained only three dollars and a crumpled letter that seemed to have been there for years.
The envelope was worn and the only thing that I could read was the return address.
I started to open the letter, hoping to find some clue.
Then I saw the dateline and found that the letter had been written almost ten years before.

Imagine your brain as a house filled with lights.
Now imagine someone turning off the lights one by one.
That's what Alzheimer’s disease does.
It turns off the lights, so that the flow of ideas, emotions and memories from one room to the next slows and eventually ceases.
And sadly, as anyone who has ever watched a parent or a spouse yielding to the spreading darkness knows,
there is no way to stop the lights from going off, no way to switch them back on once they've grown dim.

The next time Christmas came, the pine tree was the first tree to be cut down.
The tree rejoiced to think it was at last to be taken and made beautiful with decorations.
The pine tree was taken by truck to a large, beautiful house and placed in a tub filled with sand.
There, people hung it with beautiful ornaments and fastened a lot of colored bulbs to its branches.
“If only they would light the bulbs,” thought the proud tree.
“How splendid I would look!”

When I was 10 years old, I took two of my friends to the station to show off my dad.
After showing them around the station, I asked Dad if we could each have a soda.
I detected just the slightest hesitation in my father's voice that day,
but he said “Sure” and gave us each a dime.
We all thanked my father and headed home for lunch.
That evening I happened to hear my parents talking.
Mom seemed upset with Dad, and said,
“You should have just said you didn't have money for sodas.
That money was for your lunch.
The kids have to understand that we don't have any extra money and you need to have your lunch.”

It was a Friday afternoon, and the last bell had just rung, which meant it was time to go home for the weekend.
Everyone was excited and hurried out of school shouting goodbye and making weekend plans.
Everyone except Sharon.
Sharon envied the other boys and girls because she wished she could be just like them.
The school was almost empty of students by the time she was ready to leave.
She wasn't in any hurry to go home because she knew what to expect when she got there.
She slowly picked up her stuff and trudged home.
Sharon

Your salesman, Sam Casey, told me that shipping charges would come to about $17.
He suggested that the order be sent express collect by truck.
I agreed and paid immediately for the merchandise.
A couple of days later, he called to ask if it would be all right to ship by Railway Express.
He assured me that the charges would be about the same.
Again, I agreed.
You can imagine my feelings when the Railway Express agent called from Brewster, about twenty miles from Poughquag, to tell me that the items had arrived, and that shipping charges would be $22.
Further, that if I wished them delivered to my house, I should have to get a trucker and pay his charges, also.

Twenty years ago, I returned from Vietnam to find that my brother had spent every check I had sent home.
He was supposed to be putting my money in a savings account, and it never dawned on me that he would be doing anything else with my checks.
I trusted him completely and never asked for proof of any kind.

As a result of this carefully designed organization of interior space, the supermarket makes more money.

We always leave a light when we go away at night.
It is so much nicer to come home to a lighted house than to a dark one.
It goes back, I suppose, to the years the boys were with us.
We never went to bed and turned out all the lights if one had not yet come in.
The light in the window was left as a greeting for the absent one.

Whenever I awakened in the night, instinctively I looked for a glimmer of light.
If there was one, I knew that not all of us had safely returned out of the night.
Now that the boys are away and we are alone, there is no one for whom to leave a lighted window.
But I can imagine that all across America lights burn through the darkness, beacons for those homeward bound.
The lamp left burning is a symbol of love brightening the pathway for the returning wanderer.
The light in the window means "Welcome home."

The moment he saw me, he hugged me and tried to calm my ragged nerves.
I kept repeating, "I'll never drive again."
He said, "Oh, yes, you will.
In fact, you are going to drive me home."
Then, he told me about Thomas Alva Edison and how he made the first electric light bulb after seven years of hard work and experimentation.
Edison handed the precious bulb to his laboratory assistant to put away.
The assistant accidentally dropped it.
Of course, the bulb broke into a thousand pieces.
Edison went to work on a second bulb.
After he had completed it, he handed it to his assistant again, to prove that he had confidence in him.
I knew how the assistant must have felt when I was behind the wheel of that car, driving my dad home.
This was only one of the lessons I learned from this remarkable man.
I am thankful to have had him for 18 years.

Why can't people keep their big mouths shut?
Our adopted daughter (age 11) came home crying yesterday.
It seems our next-door neighbor told our little girl that she was adopted.
I had not planned on telling her for another four or five years.

I found it in the middle of the sidewalk on my way home from school one spring morning.
It was a very tiny creature, whose feathers were wet in the rain.
And it was hardly breathing when I picked it up, I fed it raw meat and other treats for several weeks.
Soon, it became strong and started to hop around.
One day, someone left a window open.
When I came home from work, I discovered that it had flown away.

She is home now - subdued and well-behaved, but still unable to understand why we were upset.
All I could say was, "Wait till you have children of your own."
To every runaway I would like to say, "Go back home where you belong.
You'd be surprised how much parents can forgive.
Their love is unconditional."

My friend's neighbor has to walk his dog, Cindy, no matter what the weather.
One evening there was a heavy downpour, but he dutifully grabbed his rain
gear, called Cindy and headed out. The hood of his slicker gave him tunnel
vision, but enabled him to face the storm. After grudgingly making a
four-block circuit for the dog's sake, he headed home, cold and wet―and
found Cindy patiently waiting for him in the garage.

When I telephoned my sister's house from my office, her teen-age son
informed me she wasn't home. I knew from past experience that leaving
a message to return my call would be futile. "Do me a favor, Eric,"
I said. "Move the tea kettle from the stove to the coffee table.
When your mother asks what it's doing there, tell her I told you to do
it and she should call me to find out why."
Later on I had to leave the office, and I returned to find my wastebasket
perched on top of my desk. "Why is this here?" I asked the secretary.
"Your sister returned your call," she replied.

Mrs. Maul thought that $4 was a very reasonable price for a thoroughbred
police dog, so she clipped out the ad in the suburban newspaper that
proclaimed this extraordinary bargain, wrote out a check, and ordered
the dog to be shipped to her residence.
A few days later the expressman deposited on her doorstep the
meanest-looking mongrel she had ever seen.
In a rage she telephoned the man who had inserted the ad, and said,
"What do you mean by calling that mutt a thoroughbred police dog?"
"He is just that," was the solemn reply.
"Don't be deceived by his looks. He's in the Secret Service. And he
is disguised as a mongrel."

During the Second World War, Winston Churchill was the British Prime Minister.
One day he had to go to the British Broadcasting Corporation to make an
important speech to the nation.
An hour before the time of this speech, he stopped a taxi in the street
and asked the driver to take him to the BBC, but the taxi-driver, who
did not recognize him, said he could not take him anywhere just then,
because he wanted to go back to his home at the other end of London to
hear Churchill make a speech on the radio.
Churchill was so pleased when he heard this answer that he gave the man
a pound, which was worth quite a lot in those days.
"All right, get in," said the driver happily, opening the door of the
taxi. "I'll take you, and to hell with Churchill and his speech!

In some villages in many developing countries people obtain their water
from ponds nearby. The water is not very clean but it is all they have.
Women and children fill the buckets or cans with water and carry them
back to their homes. In some countries, they make the water a little
safer by passing it through a water filter.

A terrible accident changed my life. A friend and I were driving home
from a midnight movie. As we approached an intersection, we stopped at a
red light. No cars seemed to be coming, so I decided to go through the

learned that we had hit a car coming from the other direction. That
accident made my friend spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair, and I
learned a costly lesson.

Every summer people like to enjoy the sun. Many make a point of getting
to the beach to get a tan. And every summer many return home suffering
from a sunburn. Not too long ago tanning was fashionable and even
promoted by doctors as a healthful activity. But today there is evidence
that regular exposure to the ultraviolet rays of sunlight, especially if
it results in burns, can be harmful to health.

There was a kind woman -- by no means well off -- who, in a hot

identical greeting cards in a shop, she snapped it up, carried it home,

gave a sigh of relief, Then she opened one remaining card, and found
these words printed on it : This little card is just to say a gift from

Everything depended on my final arrow. Still, my rival looked calm. For a
moment, I dreamed I would go home with a gold medal. I approached the
shooting line, remembering all the hard training I had gone through.
Suddenly, I felt my heart beating faster. But I slowly aimed at the
target. Shortly after my arrow began to fly, I heard the crowd cheering.
When I looked at the target, I could not believe my eyes. My arrow hit
the very center of the yellow circle. Then I heard my teammates shouting,
"You did it!"

YOU NEEDED ME
Sung by Anne Murray
I cried a tear You wiped it dry.
I was confused You cleared my mind.
I sold my soul You bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me
You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again.
You put me high up on a pedestal, So high that I could almost see
eternity.
You needed me You needed me.
And I can't believe it's you.
I can't belive it's ture.
I needed you and you were there.
And I'll never leave.
Why should I leave I'd be a fool.
'Cause I've finally found someone who really cares.
You held my hand when it was cold.
When I was lost you took me home.
You gave me hope when I was at the end.
And turned my lies back into truth again.
You even called me friend.

So high that I could almost see eternity.
You needed me.
You needed me.

Crash Test Dummies
Once there was this kid
Who got into an accident
And couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair
ad turned
From black into bright white
He said that it as from when
The cars had smashed so hard

Once there was this girl
Who wouldn't go and change
Whithe the girls in the changeroom
But when they finally make her
They saw birthmarks all over her body
She couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just been there

But both girl and boy were glad
'Cause one kind had it worse than that
'Cause then there was this boy
Whose parent made him
Come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
Thy shook and lurched
All over the church floor
He couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just gone there

Wonderful Tonight
sung by Eric Clapton
It's time to go home now
And I've got an aching head
So I give her the car keys
She helps me to bed
And then I tell her as I turn out the light
I say "my darling, You are wonderful tonight"
Oh my darling you are woderful tonight.
