belly는 가슴뼈(breastbone)에서 골반(pelvis)까지 걸치는 몸의 부분, 복부 장기가 들어있는 부분을 가리킨다. 그러나 일반적으로 이 말은 상스럽고 거친 말로 느껴지고 있다. 미국에서보다 영국에서 더 그렇지만 영국에서는 19세기의 genteelism(점잔빼는 어법)에서 「상스럽다」(improper)라는 낙인이 찍혀 그 영향으로 거의 사라져 가고 있고, 동물의「배」, 선박의 「뱃속」, 비행기의 「기체의 밑바닥」따위, 그리고 약간의 속담, 관용구에 남이 있을 뿐이다. 미국에서는 사정이 좀 달라 구어나 속어의 성구에 흔히 쓰이고 있다.

또한 어원적 뜻은 bag로, bellows(풀무)와 유사하다.
abdomen은 의학용어 또는 병실에서의 회화나 진단서 이외에 이 말을 쓰는 것은 과장된 어법이며 완곡어법이다.
stomach는 위나 위장을 가리키지만 stomach ache처럼 가끔 한층 넓은 범위에도 쓰인다. 또한 비유적으로 I cannot stomach his insulting behavior.(그의 무례한 거동은 참을 수 없다.)처럼 사용되기도 한다. 그러나 이 말이 복부 전체를 가리키는 데에 적당하지 않다는 점을 말하는 이나 듣는 이가 잘 알고 있어, 완곡어로 쓰는 경우에는 오히려 어색한 감이 도는 말이다.
tummy는 어린애들이 쓰는 말로 stomach의 이형(s)tummi(ck)에서 왔다. 아무리 섬세한 이라도 stomach pump, stomach ulcer 따위의 말에 tummy라고는 하지 않을 것이다.
guts는 본래의 뜻은 「내장, 배알」(entrails)이고 상스럽고 기분나쁜 말이다. 그러나 이런 말이 필요한 경우에는 이 말을 쓸 수밖에 없다. 또한 단수형이 복수형보다 덜 불쾌하다.

이 없음을 알리는 건강 진단서를 두고 하는 말입니다. bill은 본래 영
수증이나 계산서를 뜻하지만 건강 이라는 뜻의 health와 함께 써서 a
bill of health라고 하면 전염병에 관한 검사 보고서를 뜻합니다. 전
염병에 관한 검사 보고서라고 하는 것은 전염병이 유행하고 있는 지역
에서 선박이 출항할 때 선장에게 발부하는 공문서를 뜻합니다. 이러한
공문서가 필요한 까닭은 전염병이 유행하고 있는 지역에서 출항하는
배가 타 지역에서 안전을 위협하는 것을 막기 위해서 입니다. 그래서

는 표현이 됩니다.
