Many people went outside around August 27 this year to observe the close encounter between Earth and Mars.
On August 27, when Mars was closer to Earth than ever in human history,
the one-way travel time of light was just 3 minutes and 6 seconds.
Thus, if you had turned a light toward Mars that day, it would have reached Mars in 186 seconds.
Mars was so bright that even the lights of the city didn't get in the way.
If you missed this astronomical show, you're really out of luck.
Mars will not be this close again until the year 2287.

Throughout the short history of the exploration of space, several space stations have been put into orbits.
The first manned space station into orbit was the Soviet station Salyut 1.
It was in 1971.
Later, in 1986, the Soviet Union launched the Mir space station.
Mir stayed in orbit until March 23, 2001.
Over that time, 104 astronauts visited the station to stay for various lengths of time.
The person who stayed the longest in space so far is Russian astronaut Valeri Polyakov.
Working as the doctor aboard the station, he lived on Mir for 438 days without returning to the earth.

If all spiders suddenly disappeared, we'd starve to death.
As soon as the canned and frozen foods were used up, there would be no more food.
The millions and millions of insects that live on earth would eat all the crops.
With no spiders, the bugs cannot be stopped.
That's what spiders do for us, though we do not always appreciate it.
They eat bugs day and night.
They have eaten a total number of bugs weighing more than several billion people on earth today.
There are too many spiders to count.

Cars appeared all over America and gradually replaced the horse and cart.
People welcomed this development.
Unfortunately, however, cars were neither safer nor did they stop pollution.
Whether we like it or not, our lives today are dominated by the motor car.
Yet, despite its importance, the car as we know it will soon no longer exist.
Before long it will use up all the fuel, which means that either new fuels must be found or the car will disappear from the face of the earth forever.

A space rock big enough to cause widespread damage will hit the Earth only about once every 1,000 years,
but experts say the destruction would be so extreme that nations should develop a joint defense against space rocks.
Some scientists estimated that the space rock would release about 10 megatons of explosive energy.
Such a rock, estimated at 180 feet across, fell down through the atmosphere over Tunguska in Siberia in 1908
and destroyed trees across 800 square miles of forest land.

Today most scientists believe that the moon formed from the Earth.
They think that a large object hit the Earth early in its history.
When the object hit the Earth, huge pieces of the Earth broke off.
These pieces went into orbit around the Earth.
After a brief time, the pieces came together and formed the moon.

Thousands of years ago, people knew how far away the moon is from the Earth.

All of the goals of space science share a common end.
It is to learn more about the earth.
Only by exploring other bodies in the skies can we answer some of the questions we have about the earth.
The things we have learned about other planets have helped us to know our own planet better.
It is important to understand the forces that control the earth.
With that understanding we may be able to manage those forces.
This control would help mankind.

Between 1969 and 1972, the United States sent astronauts to the moon.
They studied the moon and returned to the earth with rock samples.
Scientists have studied these pieces of rock, the moon's movements, and information about the moon and the earth.
They can finally answer questions about the origin of the moon.

Today most scientists believe that the moon formed from the earth.
They think that a large object hit the earth early in its history.
Perhaps the object was as big as Mars.
When the object hit the earth, huge pieces of the earth broke off.
These pieces went into orbit around the earth.
After a brief time, the pieces came together and formed the moon.

This “impact theory” explains many facts about the earth and the moon.
For example, the moon is very dry because the impact created so much heat that it dried up all the water.
The earth has iron in its center.
However, the moon has very little iron in its center.
This is because the moon formed from lighter materials that make up the outer part of the Earth.

People living along the coasts are familar with the rise and fall of the ocean's surface.
Tides result from the pull of the moon's and the sun's gravity on the earth.
Although the moon is much smaller than the sun, it is much closer to the earth.
It is the moon that has the greatest effect on the tides.
The sun also influences the tides.
However, it is so far away that it has less than half the pull of the moon.
The combined pull of the moon and the sun determines the height of the tides.

The Celtic New Year was November 1.
The night before was considered a special night when ghosts and witches roamed the earth.
Ghosts and witches are still associated with Halloween.
On the night before the Celtic New Year, people went from house to house begging for food.
They wore masks so that the spirits returning from the dead would not recognize them.
Today children still wear masks and trick-or-treat from door to door on Halloween.
The Celts also carried lanterns to frighten away the spirits.
They carved the lanterns from vegetables like potatoes.
Now pumpkins hold lighted candles on Halloween.

The pollution of sea, air, and land harms our quality of life by affecting our health.
More serious is the possibility of the end of human life itself.
We may become so developed that we kill ourselves!
Therefore, the most recent definition of development emphasizes sustainable development:
the improvement of human quality of life within the limits of a green, healthy earth.
In other words, it is development which aims to protect, not destroy, the earth's resources.
This will make sure that our present lifestyle does not harm future generations' lifestyles.
They will also be able to get fruits from the earth.

Many people have been thinking of the possibility of sending human beings to Mars.
But we aren't really at that point yet.
Why? The first reason is safety.
Different nations have sent more than thirty probes toward Mars, but only one-third of them have survived the trip.
The second reason is cost.
It costs about a million dollars per kilogram to deliver robots to Mars.
It would take at least fifty billion dollars to get a person to Mars.
The last reason is the cosmic radiation that astronauts would absorb during the mission.
Much of this radiation is blocked on Earth by the Earth’s magnetic field.
Mars has no magnetic field.
* probe 탐사선

Greenland, the largest island in the world, is just about the most ungreen place on earth!
Most of this island, which is more than three times as large as Texas, is continually covered with ice and snow.
This ice sheet is two miles thick in some places.
There are no forests in Greenland; there are just some trees, shrubs, and mosses in the southern part and along the coasts.
Then how did this land get its name?
In 982, a Scandinavian explorer named Eric the Red sailed to Greenland and spent three years there.
When he returned home, he called the land he had seen “Greenland” in the hope of convincing some of his followers to settle there.

The people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their country will disappear from the face of the earth.
Several times this year, the Pacific island nation has been flooded by a sudden high tide.
These tides, which swept across the island and destroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain.
What is causing these mysterious high tides?
The answer may well be global warming.
When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants are released;
these pollutants trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere.
Warmer temperatures cause water to expand and also create more water by melting glaciers and polar ice caps.

As a subject of scientific observation and study, geography has made important contributions both to the understanding of the world and to its development.
As we move further into the Information Age, geography continues to contribute to the understanding of a world that is more complex and fast-changing than ever before.
With such an understanding, it is possible not only to appreciate the diversity and variety of the world’s peoples and places,
but also to be aware of their relationships to one another and to be able to make positive contributions to local, national, and global development.

Many scientists have long believed that either a change in climate or widespread disease killed the world’s huge animals, such as the woolly mammoth.
Some evidence suggests, though, that these theories may be incorrect.
In Australia, scientists have dug up bone and eggshell fossils that indicate a massive die-off of large animals about 46,000 years ago.
This extinction occurred after humans arrived on that continent about 52,000 years ago.
These time frames suggest that people are responsible for the animals' disappearance.
Similar evidence comes from North America.
Humans arrived there about 13,000 years ago.
Approximately 1,200 years after their appearance, about thirty species of large animals were gone.

Now, however, Peter Ward and Donald Brownlee claim that the conventional wisdom is wrong.
In their book, they say the search for alien life is likely to fail.
Drawing on astronomy, geology, and paleontology, they argue that humans might indeed be alone in the cosmos.
They say that science is showing the Earth’s composition and stability to be extraordinarily rare.
Almost everywhere else, the radiation levels are so high and the right chemical elements are so scarce that life cannot evolve into advanced communities.

Dr. Ward, a famous paleontologist specializing in mass extinction, says:
“We have finally said out loud what we have thought for so long.
Life, at least complex life, is rare in the universe.”
His colleague Dr. Brownlee comments:
“People say the sun is a typical star, but that's not true.
Almost all other environments in the universe are terrible for life.
It's only in the Garden-of-Eden like Earth that it can exist.”

Sky is the region of space visible from the earth.
It consists of the atmosphere, which extends hundreds of miles or kilometers above the earth.
Its colors result from the scattering of sunlight by the gas molecules and dust particles in the atmosphere.
When it is clear, the waves of blue light are scattered much more than those of any other color.
As a result, it appears blue.
When it is, however, full of dense clouds or smoke, it turns gray.

My biology teacher, Mr. Joseph, has a jar.
Not just any jar, mind you, but a jar of immense importance.
In 1996, Mr. Joseph filled the jar with pond water.
He put the cap on, and hasn't opened it since.
In this pond water tiny organisms thrive.
That jar is much like the Earth, Mr. Joseph says.
The living things of the Earth are independent of the rest of the universe and they don't care what's going on around them.

My first reaction to this story was to laugh.
But then I began to think.
How many times has our own world been on the brink of destruction?
How many asteroids came within miles of slamming into the earth?
How many times have leaders of countries almost pushed that deadly World War III button, while the rest of humanity happily went along with their lives?
I finally understood what Mr. Joseph was talking about: Our planet is fragile, and we must be careful not to break it.

Scientists may know a lot about the outside of the earth,
but they are still not sure about the inside.
For example, they understand how mountains are made and what a volcano is,
but they do not know when a volcano will send hot rock into the air.
Scientists also are not sure about how the earth was made.
They have many different ideas about this.
There are still many difficult questions for scientists who study the earth.

On many maps and globes, the ocean is shown as a smooth blue surface.

Yet beneath the ocean is a mountain taller than Mount Everest and a mountain chain that circles the entire earth.

One of the most surprising discoveries about the ocean in recent years is that its floor is as rugged and varied as any place on the earth's land.

The markets of the world are flowing with goods and services produced by the interplay of sun and earth, air and water, and the inexhaustible imagination and energy of man.
Wherever you touch an object made or conveyed by man, you are touched by all the people who have reached their hands to make this possible for you.
Daily use is daily communion.

Plants are necessary for life on earth.
In the process of photosynthesis, roots, stems, and leaves of green plants work together to make sugar from sunlight.
During the process of photosynthesis, plants use sunlight, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide (CO2), and water to make food.
In this way, green plants use the sun's energy to make food for the plant and other living things.

The living organisms, such as animals, get their energy by eating the plants.
Human beings eat both animals and plants to get energy.
Without green plants, the sun's energy could not be used on the earth, and all other organisms living on the earth would die.

These living creatures also interact with the nonliving, or inorganic, things around them.
Such areas of close interdependence in nature are known as ecosystems.
These ecosystems, however, do more than support the plants and animals that live in them.
They also influence the environment of the entire planet.
The ecosystems of tropical rain forests, for example, protect the entire planet by returning water to the air as vapor and by providing much of the oxygen that we breathe.

This belief in the powers of "blue" still exists in some parts of the world today.
In the Middle East, Arabs often paint the doors of their houses blue to frighten away demons.
They also dress young children in blue to protect them from these evil forces.

It is clear, therefore, that the destruction of the Amazon rain forest must stop.
The harm that this destruction is causing is far greater than any benefits it might bring.
All the nations of the world must become involved in this problem, for the entire planet depends on the Amazon forest to a great extent.
This involvement must not be one-sided.
We must not expect Brazil alone to bear the responsibility or pay the cost.
Ecology is an issue that has no national boundaries.
We shall all have to make sacrifices, including contributions of money, work, and time.
Only by making such a commitment to our planet can we guarantee a safe and healthful environment for our children.

He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much;
who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children;
who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul;
who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it;
who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had;
whose life was an inspiration;
whose memory a benediction.
성공한 사람은 이러한 사람이다―멋지게 살고, 자주 웃고, 사랑을 많이 한 사람;
순수한 여성의 믿음, 지성인의 존경, 어린 아이의 사랑을 향유한 사람;
자신의 분야에 들어가서 임무를 완성한 사람;
개량된 양귀비, 완전한 시(詩)이든 구조된 영혼에 의해서든 세상을 보다 낫게 한 사람;
지구의 아름다움을 충분히 감상하고 이를 표현한 사람;
남에게서 항상 좋은 점을 찾으며 그들에게 자신이 가진 최상의 것을 주는 사람;
그의 삶이 영감을 주는 사람;

Almost all of the world's civilized populations believe that the earth is a
sphere. Only among isolated primitive tribes is the theory that the earth is
flat accepted.

An extremely important process, photosynthesis is the ultimate source of
food for almost all organisms on earth.

Thus the idea of the earth as the center of the universe was destroyed.

In his innocence, man held his own special planet to be the center of the starry
universe until Copernicus, 431 years ago, dared to challenge this dogma. The earth
moves around the sun, he said, not vice versa. It was a profound and troubling idea.
Yet it was still far from the whole truth, for it kept the sun at the center of things.
And that misconception persisted in the minds of most until the coming of
photography and the large telescopes of the 20th century.

The first men who taught that the earth is round were persecuted.

It's Swiss joke that the nation's warplanes need good brakes because a Mach 2
jetfighter can scorch across Switzerland in 4.73 minutes flat. One of our planet's
tiniest countries, it is smaller than West Virginia; but Europe's oldest republic
wields power and influence far beyond its size.

Strictly a have naught nation in natural resources no oil, no coal, no gold,
no uranium Switzerland nevertheless became he richest nation on earth in 1978:
its per capita income streaked to a matchless $13,853 a year, elbowing oil
gorged Kuwait to second place($13,000)and the United States to a humble eighth($9,646)

Human environmental interference has halted the approach of a new
ice age and will mean a warmer global climate, a local researcher has
said.

WHO TURNED UP THE HEAT?

One of their most alarming findings shows that vegetation has increased by
ten percent above the 45th parallel since 1980.
In combination, these changes relate to an enormous shift in the planet's climate.

Mars resembles our planet in some ways.

The equator divides the globe into two hemispheres.

John claimed that the earth was flat.

People once believed that the eathe is flat.

"Will mankind survive?" "Who knows?" The question I want to put is more
searching : Who cares? It is clear that most of us today do not care. How
many of us would be willing to give up some minor convenience in the hope
that this might extend the life of man on earth by a hundred years?
Suppose we knew with certainty that mankind could not survive a thousand
years unless we gave up our wasteful diet of meat, abandoned all pleasure
driving, and cut back on every use of energy. Would we care enough for
our children to pay the price of their survival?

The edge of the sea is a strange and beautiful place. All through the
long history of Earth it has been an area of unrest. Not only do the
tides advance and retreat in their eternal rhythms, but the level of the
sea itself is never at rest. It rises or falls as the glaciers melt or
grow. Today a little more land may belong to the sea, tomorrow a little
less.

By the year 2000, the area of the earth's forests is expected to
diminish by a fifth. Most of the loss will be in tropical forests in
developing countries and will be permanent. For developed countries, the
decline will mean price rises for wood products, but for developing
countries the impact will be more severe. Nine-tenths of the wood
consumed in the Third World is used for cooking and heating. Shortages
will mean that a larger portion of cash will be used to pay for this
basic fuel.

The pleasures of contact with the natural world are not reserved just for
the artists. They are available to anyone who will place himself under
the influence of a lonely mountain top or the stillness of a forest. I
believe natural beauty has a necessary place in the spiritual development
of any individual or any society. I believe that whenever we destroy
beauty, or whenever we substitute something artificial for a natural
feature of the earth, we have slowed down man's spiritual growth.

As human activities have increased, the damage to the earth's environment
has become more serious. You can easily imagine a situation like this: a
small child playing in a tiny room doesn't cause much trouble. But, if
the child grows into a 20-year-old man, the room will suffer damage. The
small room represents our earth and the boy our human activity. The size
of our world has not changed, but the scale of human activities has
increased greatly. Clearly, the damage will get worse year by year.

We are part of and nurtured by the earth, much as an unborn child is
part of and nurtured by its mother. If Mother Earth is sick, we're sick.
If the mother dies, we die. And yet every day, nearly every moment of our
lives, We are doing our mother harm.
