The role of the rare individual who is conventionally said to have made
a discovery is much less unique in science than in other creative work.
It has been fairly said that if Beethoven had not written his symphonies
no one else would ever have done so. But if Darwin for instance, had
died young, someone else would certainly have put forward the theory of
Natural Selection. Indeed, someone else did, though in much less detail,
independently.
