It is (only) natural that those who go to United States for the first time should feel uneasy.

[比較] smell, scent, odor, aroma
I like the smells in the country after a rain.
foul smells/ fresh smells/ the rank smell of weeds(잡초의 역한 냄새)

또한 odor는 흔히 「향기로운 냄새」이며 불쾌한 냄새는 a rank odor, a foul odor처럼, 형용사로 수식된다.
The three Maries brought aromas for to smear our Lord.(세 분 마리아는 우리 주님께 바를 향료를 가지고 왔다.)
the aroma of fresh coffee

[比較] sure, certain, confident, positive

I am sure(certain) that he is honest./ He is sure(certain) to lose./ I felt for time sure of his innocence; I am now certain of his guilt.
There is no certain cure for his disease.와 The soldier faced certain death. 그러나 대개 A certain person phoned.와 He had a certain charm.

[比較] swing, sway, oscillate, vibrate, fluctuate, undulate, rock
The lantern hanging overhead swung in the wind.
The tavern sign swings from a hook above the door./ He walked down the street swinging his arms.

stock prices that fluctuate from day to day
undulating land/ The flag undulates in the breeze.
A cradle rocks.
The house rocked in the storm.

[比較] take, seize, grasp, clutch, snatch, grab
take the lamp from the table
take a city
take the opportunity/ take the temperature of a room by observing the thermometer/ take a bath/ take a rest
He seized the gun from the robber./ The hungry children seized the food that was offered them.
seize an opportunity/ seize the attention of the crowd
seize the throne
The character of Louis ⅩⅢ is difficult to seize, for it comprised qualities hardly ever combined in one man.(루이 13세의 성격을 파악하기 어려운 것은, 일찍이 어떤 개인에게도 결합된 적이 없었던 여러 자질들을 포함하고 있었기 때문이다.
Pneumonia seized him in his thirty-fifth year.
The hawk grasped the fowl with its talons.(매는 발톱으로 새를 꽉 잡았다.)
grasp an idea
The child clutched his mother's hand./ She clutched his hand in terror./ I clutched desperately at the twigs as I fell.
snatch a purse/ snatch a kiss
snatch a child from the flames/ He snatched the book from her hand.
grab all the food from the table/ grab power/ The child grabbed all the candy.

[比較] till, until
A son's a son till he takes a wife처럼 할 수도 있다.
Until he went to college, he never had thought of his speech./ He had never thought of his speech till(or until) he went to college.
Wait till the rain has stopped라고도 할 수 있다. He waited till the rain stopped 또는 He waited till the rain had stopped라고 할 수 있다. till(또는 until)은 He did not learn of it till the next day(다음 날에 가서야 그 일을 알았다)에서처럼 부정적 구문에 쓰이기도 한다. 이 구문에서 계속되는 것은 부정의 상태 즉, he did not learn이다. It was not long till we realized(오래지 않아 우리는 깨달았다) 같은 글은 이렇게 설명할 수 없다. 여기서 주절 it was not long은 계속하는 것으로 생각되는 문장을 만들지 못한다. She can't go till she finishes her work와 Until injustice is ended, peace will never be realized 같은 글에서는 till, until의 용법은 표준적이지만 다음과 같은 구문에서 till, until의 사용은 가끔 나타나는 수는 있어도 격식 차리는 글에서는 before, when을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
It was not long before he noticed the change.(이윽고 그 변화가 그의 눈에 띄었다.)/ She had scarcely arrived when it began to storm.

[比較] use, employ, utilize, exploit, work
use a pencil(telephone)/ Use your eyes, child! It's right there in front of you!
He's only using you./ He used his brother to advance himself.
I could use your help this afternoon. I could use you this afternoon.
use eggs in cooking/ All the butter has been used.
used books/ Used cars and trucks were being marketed in this fashion.
She had employed her leisure in reading every book that came in her way./ employ a vacant lot as a playground/ He employs five mechanics.
A writer uses words effectively who knows what ones he should employ in a given context.
Well, you'll just have to utilize what's there.
He exploited the concession to the last penny.(그는 이권을 모두 이용해 먹었다.)
They have exploited that child mercilessly.
He worked the soil.(그는 땅을 갈았다.)/ If the clay is worked in the hands it will soon become soft and malleable.
She's been working him for forty years.

[比較] view, prospect, scene, vista
a fine view of the surrounding country/ The view is cut off by the next building.
a commanding prospect of the countryside
a rustic scene
a pleasant vista

[比較] wedding, marriage, nuptials, matrimony, wedlock
Will you dance at my wedding?/ A thousand invitations to the wedding were sent out?
They announced the marriage of their daughter./ Marriage is a basic social institution.
Theirs was a long and happy marriage.
Millions of Britons bought newspapers to read of the royal nuptials.
be joined in bonds of holy matrimony
Children born out of wedlock are children of parents who are not legally married.

You are history!
이 말을 영어로 표현해 보면 They are history가 된다.
그러니까 They are goner 또는 They are has-been과 같은 뜻이다.
The rest is history라고 어떤 famous한 사람의 이야기를

Paula Jones Catches President Clinton
With His Pants Down이라는 제목을 단 신문을 낸 적이 있는데
catch(someone's) pants down이라는 숙어는 '(누구를)바지가

I`ve been there before.

I have chapped lips.
My hand is chapped.
-

I'll sue you.
I'll see you in court. court

Jolly Roger
OVER -> 응답바람
OUT -> 이상 교신 끝
RADIO CHECK ->
I HEAR YOU R.C. -> 잘 들려요.
Tom, Dick, and Harry
Old Harry는 악마
The Vikings used to harry the English coast.
George
Let George do it.

`Overseas Travel Tax' : '
The just-announced ``10-year tourism-promotion plan'' is
short-sighted, and is apparently the product of expediency rather than
any long-term strategy. It has been motivated by the need to finance
local tourism programs and help reduce the surging tourism deficit, but
it is feared that the rough, makeshift way it has been put together will
result in many undesirable side-effects.

^^The fact is that the leaders of Hanchongnyon and the inter-Korean
Pomchonghangnyon youth-student confederation are regarded here as a
pro-Pyongyang group with their support for the North Korean proposal
that unification of the two Koreas should be brought about through a
confederation. The leftist students at the same time refuse to recognize
the miserable plight of the North Korean people under the hereditary
tyranny of Kim Il-sung and his son, Chong-il. Incidentally, the two
delegates from Hanchongnyon illegally sent to the North via Europe
reportedly bowed in tribute at the tomb of Kim Il-sung, laying a
bouquet there. Ironically, pro-North Korean radical student leaders
here have rarely expressed respect for any of South Korea's presidents.

When I first opened “Body Shop” in 1976
my only object was to earn enough to feed my children.
Today “Body Shop” is a company rapidly growing all around the world.
In the years since I began I have learned a lot.
Much of what I have learned will be found in this book.
It says about how to run a successful business.
It's not a normal business book, nor is it just about my life.
The message is that to succeed in business you have to be different.
In business, as in life, you need to enjoy yourself,
to have a feeling of family and to feel excited by the unexpected things.

There are many ways to communicate.
Gestures using motions are very common in communication all over the world.
Every gesture expresses different meanings and every country has its own language of gestures.
Let's look at one of the American gestures, for example.
Tapping your temple with your forefinger or making a circular motion around your ear, usually while rolling your eyes towards someone and then pointing at them, means that you disapprove of that person's behavior or opinion as being abnormal.

Roger now tours the country, speaking to groups about what it takes to be a winner, no matter who you are.
“The only difference between you and me is that you can see my handicap, but I can't see yours.
We all have them.
When people ask me how I've been able to overcome my physical handicaps, I tell them that I haven't overcome anything.
I've simply learned what I can't do ― such as play the piano or eat with chopsticks ― but more importantly, I've learned what I can do.
Then I do what I can with all my heart and soul.”

lly wait only one second or less for a response―no time for a child to think.
When adults increase their ‘wait time' to three seconds or more, children respond with more logical, complete and creative answers.
And rather than telling children what to think, give them time to think for themselves.
If a child gets the answer wrong, be patient.
You can help when it's needed by asking a few pointed questions.

Laboratory experiments performed decades ago, are now considered unethical and inhumane.
Past experiments included keeping baby monkeys from being touched by their mothers.
Without touching, the babies became unemotional and failed to progress.
Deprived of their mothers, they did not explore, as young primates normally do.
For humans, insufficient touching in early years can have lifelong results.
Research indicates, in touching cultures, adult aggression is low, whereas in cultures where touch is limited, adult aggression is high.
Studies of a variety of cultures show a correspondence between high rates of physical affection in childhood and low rates of adult physical violence.

After many years, critical attention has finally been paid to the portion of the Miss America pageant called the swimsuit competition.
Thankfully, people are beginning to complain about this event.
In 1996, a telephone poll was conducted to determine if the swimsuit competition should remain.
Although the majority of callers voted to keep it, a good portion was critical and argued that the swimsuit competition should be eliminated.
The question will undoubtedly be raised again, and the next time the answer may well be different.
Let's hope so, because this portion of the pageant only lowers the dignity of women.

Some history researchers suggest Marco Polo never actually visited China.
Why do they say that?
First, they ask why he didn't write about the Great Wall.
It's hard to miss!
Then, they point out he also failed to mention Chinese tea-drinking ceremonies, a very important part of life there.
Moreover, no Chinese sources of the period mention Marco Polo, although they mention other foreigners.
Finally, some say he never traveled much farther than Turkey.
Travelers who tried to follow his route always became lost at this point.
Perhaps he copied details from guidebooks on China.

Traditional fairy tales show heroines who are usually beautiful and passive and spend a lot of their time indoors cooking and cleaning.
Many authors today, however, are creating fairy stories in which the heroines are more active.
For example, in Cinder Edna, a modern version of Cinderella by Ellen B. Jackson, the heroine wears comfortable shoes and takes the bus to the party.
In Sleepless Beauty by Frances Minters, Beauty, instead of falling asleep, fools the wicked witch by setting an alarm clock.
In other stories set in modern times, more and more strong, clever female characters are appearing.

The real danger starts when utterly unnecessary things become bargains.
There are a huge number of people who just cannot resist bargains and sales.
So long as they think they are getting a bargain, they will buy clothes they will never wear, furniture they have no space for.
Old ladies will buy inline skates and non-smokers will buy pipe-cleaners.
And I once heard of a man who bought an electric circular saw as a bargain and cut off two of his fingers the next day.
But he had no regrets: the saw had been truly cheap.

Expect the Unexpected!
You should prepare yourself to be tolerant of uncomfortable bus trips and unfamiliar food.
You may encounter people with different concepts about time and personal space.
Be ready to learn about and observe differences.
The differences you observe while abroad will undoubtedly enrich your understanding of your own culture.
Try to learn as much as possible about local customs, beliefs, and language.
Talk to others who have been to your destination and seek opportunities to see movies and read up on the country and culture.

The countryside where I grew up is very isolated.
You can drive along the seaside road for miles without seeing another car.
In all directions you look at, it looks like a breathtaking vista.
The view is especially dramatic, with giant dark cliffs rising out of the water.
Such a remote environment is a perfect place to relax.
It brings out the artist in me.
I often take my paints and a canvas and try to capture the exciting feel of the shoreline.

You have probably heard of fingerprints, but do you know about noseprints?
These are not for people.
These are for cows.
Farmers use these to aid them in knowing if a cow belongs to them.
Farmers also use these to stop people who steal cattle.
A cow’s nose has lines and circles on it just as a person’s fingers do.
No two cows have these wholly alike.
These vary from cow to cow.
That is why these can help farmers know if a cow belongs to their herd.

While shopping malls have changed our lives, not all of their effects have been positive.
Most of the shops and services found in malls are parts of large corporations.
These businesses have taken away customers from smaller shops in the area and forced them to close.
That has meant fewer individually-owned businesses and less local control over jobs.
Malls have sometimes been built on land that is important for the survival of birds and wild animals.
Wherever they are built, they cover large areas with buildings and parking lots, instead of trees or grass.
Thus, they contribute to the general loss of nature.

The postal system became an avenue for bio-terrorism.
Often fatal viruses sent in letters resulted in the deaths of innocent people.
Such attacks are just one reason why we should seriously consider permanently shutting down the Postal Service and moving to a purely electronic mail system.
But there are other good reasons for shutting down our old-fashioned system of physically transporting person-to-person letters.
Specifically, continuing to move paper mail around is wastefully inefficient.
Eliminating what has clearly become an old delivery system would put a stop to the millions of dollars the post office loses every year.
We would also conserve precious natural resources, such as trees and water, and eliminate the pollution caused by the manufacture of paper.

Children who appear intelligent and have normal sight and hearing may nevertheless have learning disabilities
such as difficulty in reading; difficulty in writing; difficulty with numbers;
and auditory-memory problems that prevent the child from remembering what has just been said.
Considered an “invisible” handicap, such learning disabilities can be detected by alert parents before the child goes to school.
If the child at about thirty months is not developing normal language skills, something is wrong.
Kindergartners should recognize the ABCs.
First-graders may commonly reverse their letters, writing a d for a b, but if they are still doing this at the start of second grade,
they should be tested for learning disabilities.
Proper and early treatment is essential.

Frequent repetition of positive experiences can change your self-concept in a dramatic and positive manner.
One major difference between people with a low level of self-respect and those with a high level is the type of memories they choose to recall.
People with a low level usually think over negative experiences
while people with a high level spend their time recalling and enjoying positive memories.
Set aside five to ten minutes a day to recall positive things and success you have achieved.
As you recall each positive experience, compliment yourself on your success.
Continue with this exercise until it is easy to recall success and you feel good about your self-compliments.

Although lie detectors are being used by governments and police departments that want guaranteed ways of detecting the truth,
the results are not always accurate.
Their aim is to measure bodily changes that contradict what a person says.
A machine, called ‘polygraph machine,' records changes in heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and the electrical activity of the skin.
In the first part of the test, you are electrically connected to the machine and asked a few neutral questions.
Your physical reactions serve as the standard.
Then you are asked a few critical questions among the neutral ones.
The assumption is that if you are guilty, your body will reveal the truth, even if you try to deny it.

Elephants living in the jungle or on the plains sometimes sense danger.
At the first hint of danger, elephants will raise their trunks to smell any threat.
When an enemy is about to attack, the trunk may be used to warn the rest of the herd.
This is done by sending a loud trumpet-like sound, which makes the earth shake.
This warns the other elephants in the herd of possible danger.
The trunk plays a vital part in its life.
In fact, it is almost impossible for an elephant to survive if its trunk becomes damaged.

Hermit crabs occupy the empty shells of dead sea snails for protection while still retaining their mobility.
They are capable of discriminating among a selection of shells of various sizes and species,
and they choose the one that fits the body most closely.
Hermit crabs change shells as they grow, although in some marine environments a large enough variety of shells may not be available
and hermit crabs may be forced to occupy a smaller-than-ideal “house."
When a shell becomes too small for the hermit crab to occupy,
it will sometimes become aggressive and fight other hermit crabs to gain a more comfortable one.

Some researchers believe that many instances in which body and personality go together are due to stereotyping;
that is, we expect a certain type of person to have certain traits, so we see those traits whether they are there or not.
For example, muscular people are believed to be dominant and forceful, so we treat them as leaders.
But sometimes they are actually shy and timid.
Fat people are supposed to be happy and warmhearted, but in reality they can just as easily be depressed or mean.

A strong, healthy body can do an amazing job of resisting disease.
There are many things you can do to keep your body healthy, such as eating proper foods.
Getting plenty of sleep is another good habit.
A tired, run-down body is like a car that needs a tune-up; it does not function efficiently.
Exercise is important in reducing stress and keeping the body healthy.
Regular, moderate exercise will relieve muscle tension, keep the muscles firm, and make the heart and blood vessels healthy.
Exercise, like sleep, makes the body function more efficiently.
People who exercise regularly can even strengthen their hearts.

Earthquakes themselves are unpredictable.
Although any powerful submarine earthquake can bring a dangerous tsunami, not all such earthquakes actually result in a big wave.
Even though you have an effective detection system, it is useless if you cannot evacuate a threatened area.
Here, speed is of the essence.
Computer modeling can help show which areas are likely to be safest,
but common sense is often the best guide―run like the wind, away from the sea.
Evacuation warnings, too, should be easy to give as long as people are awake.
Radios are very effective to tell people to run.

Have you ever seen a news documentary on war or thought about the suffering that people and animals experience in a war?
This cubist painting by Picasso, called Guernica shows such experiences.
You can see a mother holding her dead child, a fallen soldier still clutching his broken sword, a woman trapped in a burning building, and a horse whose body is pierced with a spear.
All the bodies look stretched out or broken.
The figures have open mouths as though they are crying out.
The light bulb that shines on the scene gives out a light that looks like crooked, pointed teeth.

Children come to kindergarten with a great range of abilities.
Some children are already reading.
On the other hand, some children don't catch onto the reading lesson until they're seven or eight.
These children are perfectly normal, just a little late.
If you are a parent or teacher of one of these children, don't nag.
Instead, soothe yourself and the child by remembering that children learn to walk and talk at different rates, and that late bloomers catch up.
Many problems, such as the inability to concentrate and write letters correctly, are natural to young children and will be outgrown in time.

My biology teacher, Mr. Joseph, has a jar.
Not just any jar, mind you, but a jar of immense importance.
In 1996, Mr. Joseph filled the jar with pond water.
He put the cap on, and hasn't opened it since.
In this pond water tiny organisms thrive.
That jar is much like the Earth, Mr. Joseph says.
The living things of the Earth are independent of the rest of the universe and they don't care what's going on around them.

Being able to put aside one's self-centered focus and impulses has social benefits:
it opens the way to empathy, to real listening, to taking another person's perspective.
Empathy, as we have seen, leads to caring, altruism, and compassion.
Seeing things from another's perspective breaks down biased stereotypes, and so breeds tolerance and acceptance of differences.
These capacities are ever more called on in our increasingly pluralistic society, allowing people to live together in mutual respect and creating the possibility of productive public discourse.
These are basic arts of democracy.

Fashions are the currently accepted styles of appearance and behavior.
The fact that some style is called a "fashion" implies a social recognition that it is temporary and will eventually be replaced by a new style.
In small-scale, traditional communities, fashions are virtually unknown.
In these communities everyone of similar age and sex wears much the same clothing and behaves in much the same way, and there is little change in styles from year to year or even from generation to generation.
In modern societies, however, fashions may change very rapidly indeed: automobile bodies assume new contours every year, and women's hemlines rise and fall with the passage of the seasons.

I've been seeing "Charlie" for over a year and our relationship is fantastic.
We get along beautifully and have a great deal in common.
This man gives me love, support, understanding and companionship.
Charlie is the man I have been waiting for all my life.
Charlie
There is, however, a problem.
My parents hate him.
My mother struggles to be civil to him, and my father won't allow Charlie's name to be mentioned in the house.

Roman law has had a deep influence upon the law of the world.
The law of most European countries is based upon it, and it has had some influence on Anglo-Saxon law, which is the other great law system of the world.
For many years Roman law seemed to be lost or forgotten, but it reappeared in the eleventh century, when there was a great revival of learning.
Many European countries began to use Roman law in their Courts.
In France, however, until Napoleon codified the law in 1804, each province had its own laws.
The Napoleonic Code was a splendid achievement, and has been copied in many countries in Europe and South America.
