이듬해 임진왜란이 발발하자 이순신 휘하에서 옥포해전·당포해전·한산해전 등에 참전해 눈부신 공을 세웠고 부산포해전에서 적을 추격하다 몰운대에서 적탄에 맞아 전사했다.
