A scandal involving a ruling party lawmaker's campaign expenses
is snowballing as the police launched a probe into allegations
that he spent money far beyond the legal ceiling.
선거비용제한액을 초과 사용한 혐의로 이명박 의원에 대한 경찰 수사
가 착수됨에 따라 그 파장이 점차 커지고 있다.
The scandal erupted when a former election campaigner for Rep.
Lee Myung-bak alleged Tuesday that the lawmaker had omitted some
680 million won from his report to an election watchdog.
이번 사건이 불거져 나온 것은 신한국당 이명박의원의 前선거운동원
이 10일 "李의원이 선거비용을 선관위에 상당액수 누락해 신고했으며,
그 액수는 6억8천여만원에 이른다"고 폭로하면서 부터이다.
The unreported money included 20 million won for the operation
of his election campaign team and 130 million won for volunteers,
Rep. Lee's former campaigner, Kim Yu-chan, claimed.
이번 사건을 폭로한 사람은 이명박의원의 선거운동원으로 활동했던
김유찬씨로 김씨는 "누락액 중에는 선거운동팀 활동비 2천만원, 자원
봉사자 활동비용 1억3천만원이 포함돼 있다"고 주장했다.
Rep. Lee, who won the election in Chongno District in central
Seoul in April, reported to the Central Election Management
Commission that he had spent about 71 million won.
서울 종로구 후보로 출마, 지난 4월 총선에서 당선한 이명박 의원이
선관위에 신고한 선거비용은 7천1백만원.
But Rep. Lee dismissed as groundless the allegation made by his
campaigner.
이명박 의원은 이같은 폭로에 대해 '사실무근'이라며 반박했다.
He said those allegations are probably the work of Lee
Jong-chan, one of the vice presidents of the main opposition
party, who had run against him in the election.
李의원은 "종로에서 낙선한 국민회의 이종찬씨의 공작에 의해 이같
은 주장이 생겨난 것으로 보인다"고 주장했다. 이종찬씨는 이명박 의
원과 함께 종로구 후보로 나섰으나 탈락한 現국민회의 부총재이다.

Construction Co., the nation's largest construction company, is
planning to file a complaint with the prosecution against Kim.
이명박 의원은 국내 굴지의 건설회사인 현대건설의 회장직을 역임하
기도 했다. 그는 김유찬씨를 검찰에 고발할 예정이다.
The election watchdog announced a list of 20 lawmakers who are
suspected of violating the election law. But Rep. Lee was not
included on the list.

Lee, however, denied most of the charges of election law
violations leveled at him during the investigation, prosecutors
